Cooper's actions

Climate + Air

Write Letters or Emails

I will gather a group of friends, family, neighbors or colleagues and write 1 letters or emails to public officials or companies to advocate for planet-friendly policies.

COMPLETED 0
DAILY ACTIONS

Climate + Air

Consume only Needs vs Wants

The more stuff we consume, the more greenhouse gasses we put into the atmosphere. I will adopt a "Needs Vs. Wants" approach this month and only buy things I need.

COMPLETED 3
DAILY ACTIONS

Freshwater + Oceans

Join a Cleanup Effort

I will organize or participate in a trash pickup at a local river, beach, or natural body of water.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Land + Forests

Borrow Before I Buy

Why buy something I will only use once or a few times if someone nearby has it for me to borrow, and why not share something I have that someone may only need a few times a year? To reduce my consumption and waste, I will create or support the sharing economy with friends, family, colleagues or neighbors.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Freshwater + Oceans

Use a Reusable Water Bottle

It's estimated over a billion water bottles are thrown away each year. Even if they were recycled, that still uses energy and resources from the earth. I will use a reusable bottle and stop purchasing bottled water, saving 4 disposable plastic bottle(s) a day.

COMPLETED 6
DAILY ACTIONS

Freshwater + Oceans

Dishwasher Efficiency

Hand washing dishes can use more energy and hot water than a dishwasher. To save water, I will use a dishwasher and scrape, rather than rinse, dishes before loading them into the dishwasher.

COMPLETED 6
DAILY ACTIONS

Biodiversity + Wildlife

Pick Up the Phone

I will gather a group of friends, family, neighbors or colleagues to make 2 phone calls to public officials or companies to advocate for planet-friendly policies.

UNCOMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Action Track: Community

Plant Trees

Trees capture carbon and produce oxygen that is essential to life on earth. I will support this important piece of nature by organizing or joining a community group to plant 5 native trees in my community, public parks, office location, campus or backyard.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Biodiversity + Wildlife

Save the Bees

Bees are vital to ecosystems. To help save the bees, I will learn which local flowers provide nectar and plant them in my backyard or in a pot on my balcony.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Climate + Air

Stay on the Ground

Carbon emissions from air travel is harmful to planetary and human health. Instead of traveling by plane, I will find an alternative way to accomplish the goals of an upcoming trip (i.e. telepresence, vacation locally).

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Biodiversity + Wildlife

Grow Local

I will research and plant a garden filled with native fruits, vegetables, and flowers to nurture local wildlife and ecosystems. I will find nearby nurseries that offer plants native to my area.

DAILY ACTIONS

Participant Feed

Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.

To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Freshwater + Oceans Use a Reusable Water Bottle
What did you learn about the amount of plastic we consume and what actions will you take to reduce your use of plastic?

PlasticOceans.org states that "According to the Container Recycling Institute, 100.7 billion plastic beverage bottles were sold in the U.S. in 2014, or 315 bottles per person."
I can only imagine that number has increased in the last ten years. I have not purchased a plastic water bottle in years, I have reused to same bottle since 2020. It is my best friend, which may sound silly but it's true. By using this bottle for so long and by convincing others to get their own we are reducing the plastic waste.

Avoiding Single use plastics, using your own water bottles can be one of the action points to reduce the plastics.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Freshwater + Oceans Dishwasher Efficiency
How can your region/household prepare for changing water situations in order to become more resilient?

    Cooper Hutchinson's avatar
    Cooper Hutchinson 4/07/2024 5:54 PM
reusing water to wash dishes with a water and soap bucket, using the dishwasher more than running constant water to wash dishes
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Climate + Air Stay on the Ground
What was your process like for restructuring your trip? How can you avoid more air travel in the future?

    Cooper Hutchinson's avatar
    Cooper Hutchinson 4/07/2024 5:53 PM
the process was fairly simple knowing that I didnt want to travel by air for multiple reasons. I traveled to Napa County California to visit friends and I took the Amtrak from Portland to get there! It saved me money, diminished my carbon footprint, and I love riding trains so it was enjoyable.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Biodiversity + Wildlife Save the Bees

sunflowers and lupine! the lupine should bloom soon and the sunflower will bloom sometime in the summer
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Land + Forests Borrow Before I Buy
How did you participate in the sharing economy? (Consider posting a photo!) What are the benefits of a sharing economy? How could a sharing economy change the dynamics you have with friends, family and/or neighbors?

    Cooper Hutchinson 4/07/2024 5:50 PM
a sharing economy helps the community in multiple ways. you benefit from getting new clothes/items, you save on plastic waste by not using cheaply made products, you learn more about your community through having these swaps.

very well! I've learned a lot about conserving water via how I do my dishes and laundry. I've learned new resources to find out more information on how i can better support my community and in turn my environment.
