Community and Connection
Share Information about Local Resources
Knowledge of local resources helps communities thrive. I will learn about local resources, especially mutual aid groups, and share them with others on social media, in conversations, or in other ways that help spread the word.
Health and Well-Being
Enjoy Fruits and Veggies
Adding fruits and vegetables to our meals nourishes our body and the planet. I will prepare and enjoy 5 servings of a variety of colorful fruits and veggies.
Health and Well-Being
Replace a Product
Small changes can make a big difference for health and sustainability. Using what I learned from auditing ingredients in the products I use, I will replace 5 toxic or harmful products I use with safer, eco-friendly alternatives.
Health and Well-Being
Prepare for Extreme Weather
Extreme weather events like hurricanes, wildfires, and floods can disrupt lives and upend our communities. I will take proactive steps to prepare for extreme weather by safeguarding my home and creating or updating an emergency plan and kit with essential supplies, evacuation routes, and contact information.
Empowering the Next Generation
Support a School
Schools play a crucial role in youth development and be hubs for sustainability. I will donate funds, time, or supplies to 2 local schools to support environmental education, field trips, sustainability projects, and youth empowerment. I will share how I supported schools on the feed.
Empowering the Next Generation
Conduct an Audit with a Young Person
Learning by doing empowers youth. I will conduct an environmental audit — such as a home energy or waste audit — alongside a young person to teach them practical sustainability skills and see what I learn from them as well.
Land, Water, and Air
Collect Rain Water
Rainwater collection reduces water waste and supports gardens. I will install a rain barrel or collect rainwater to use for 4 outdoor tasks, such as watering plants or cleaning.
Land, Water, and Air
Learn About Water Justice
Access to clean water is a basic right, yet not everyone has it. I will spend 30 minutes learning about water justice issues and who is affected.
Land, Water, and Air
Reduce Vehicle Idling
Idling cars wastes fuel, contributes to climate change, and pollutes the air in our communities. I will turn off my engine when waiting in my car to reduce air pollution and carbon emissions.
Wildlife
Learn How to Save the Bees
Bees and other pollinators are vital to ecosystems and agriculture. I will spending 10 minutes learning about local pollinators and why they are so important.
Sustainable Innovation
Choose a Product Made with Sustainable Materials
Every choice matters. I will purchase or switch to products made from sustainable or recycled materials to support innovation and reduce environmental impact.
Wildlife
Try At Least One Principle of Leave No Trace
After learning about the Principles of Leave No Trace, I will take at least one action to minimize my impact on the outdoors while enjoying nature. I will post what I tried to the feed to encourage others to do the same!
Sustainable Innovation
Learn about Sustainable Innovation
Innovation can create a more sustainable world. I will spend 20 minutes learning about new materials, technologies, ideas, or practices that help solve environmental challenges and improve our planet's future.
Wildlife
Donate to Support Wildlife
There are many amazing projects supporting wildlife and their habitats. I will choose a project or organization to support that helps species and habitats I care about and make a donation.
Sustainable Innovation
Invest in the Future of Sustainability
Sustainable investments shape a greener future. I will research and invest in companies, funds, or projects that supports sustainability, such as renewable energy, green tech, or sustainable practices. I will share more about who I supported with others on social media or in the Ecochallenge feed.

REFLECTION QUESTIONWildlifeWhat project or organization did you choose to support, and why did it resonate with you? What are some ways you can continue to support wildlife conservation beyond financial contributions?
Adam Houry 4/30/2025 12:59 PMI will support the San Diego Nature Conservancy Program. This organization resonated highly with me because it recognizes San Diego's natural beauty and aims to protect it. One way that I can support wildlife conservation beyond financial contribution is through spreading the word either in person or through social media. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWildlifeHow did your experience go in trying an action to Leave No Trace? Did you notice others doing the same, or not? From a perspective of having empathy for others, why might people not adhere to the Leave No Trace principles?
Adam Houry 4/30/2025 12:55 PMI left no trace while going on a hike with my dog, as I made sure to pick up all the trash I left from the snacks I ate. The trail was busy, and I noticed that people sometimes leave trash without knowing. Unfortunately, some people simply do not care enough to adhere to the Leave No Trace principles. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWildlifeHow do pollinators impact your daily life, and what changes can you make to ensure they continue to thrive?
Adam Houry 4/30/2025 12:53 PMPollinators are crucial for the health of fruits and vegetables, ones in which I eat every day. I can plant flowers in the garden to support pollinators. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONLand, Water, and AirHow did collecting rainwater influence your understanding of sustainable water use? What tasks or activities could benefit most from rainwater collection in your household?
Adam Houry 4/28/2025 3:03 PMCollecting rainwater and using it to water the plants showed me how it can relevie stress on an ecosystem. The garden in my house would benefit most from rainwater collection, as I could collect the rainwater and use is as an alternative for sprinklers. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONLand, Water, and AirHow did being mindful of vehicle idling change your perspective on fuel consumption and air quality? What other transportation habits can you adopt to reduce your environmental impact?
Adam Houry 4/28/2025 2:56 PMPrior to this challenge, I never thought about turning off my car while stationary, yet this challenge led me too realize that everybody leaving the car on while stationary accumulated together created significant carbon emissions. One transportation habit I look to implement into my life is to start biking to nearby areas. I go to sprouts about every other day to grab random groceries, and I drive there every time, but if I were to take my bike out it would produce a lot less emissions. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONLand, Water, and AirWhat water justice issues did you learn about, and who is most affected in your community? How can you contribute to creating equitable access to clean water in your area?
Adam Houry 4/28/2025 2:44 PMI watched a You Tube video on polluted water systems, as polluted drinking water is unfortunately something very common. The homeless are most affected by this in my community. I can contribute to this problem by letting others know about this issue. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONEmpowering the Next GenerationHow can schools play a bigger role in shaping future environmental leaders, and how can you support them?
Adam Houry 4/28/2025 11:30 AMSchools are significantly responsible for shaping human knowledge, and through the proper education of our environment, we can create future environmental leaders. Each person can make a difference in this effort by donating what they can to their local schools, and I did so by donating a large quantity of pencils. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONEmpowering the Next GenerationWhat did you and the young person learn from conducting the audit together, and how did it change their understanding of sustainability? Did anything change about your understanding of sustainability?
Adam Houry 4/28/2025 11:24 AMI did a brief audit with my little brother, and I made it easy to understand for him, and by the end of it he seemed to have a better understanding of sustainability. My understanding of sustainability remained the same, but I learned how the youth were unaware of the topic. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth and Well-BeingWhat did you do to prepare for extreme weather events? Share any tips or resources you found helpful in the feed!
Adam Houry 4/27/2025 3:21 PMTo prepare for an extreme weather event, I created an essentials bag in my kitchen which contains first aid materials, and military-grade snacks that take years to expire. I found it helpful to let all members of my house know where this bag is. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth and Well-BeingWhat product did you replace, and why was it important to you? How do you feel about making a small change for a healthier, more sustainable home?
Adam Houry 4/27/2025 3:16 PMThe product I replaced was my deodorant, as it contained toxic chemicals and I replaced it with a natural based deodorant. The deodorant did not have much personal value to me except for the fact that I had been using it for years. Even though this is a small change, I feel better about myself because it is healthier for me and better four our beloved environment.
