D16. Another surprising things I’ve seen and learned in visiting the National Museum of Natural History of the Philippines are the different campaigns they have to protect our natural resources.

    HOPE FOR THREATENED BIODIVERSITY

The Philippines is a "megadiverse" country and is among a group of countries which collectively harbors seventy percent of the world's flora and fauna. Our country is among the richest in the world in terms of biodiversity and endemism in both aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems. However, it is also one of 25 countries identified as a biological hotspot, which means half of the known number of endemic flora and fauna are threatened with extinction. In fact, conservation biologists place the Philippines among the
"hottest of hotspots" in the world next to Madagascar.

Each of us has a role in saving our biodiversity and the environment. That role may be as fleeting as saying no to single-use commercial products such as plastics, or stopping illegal trade of wildlife by not patronizing this practice. Saving our Biodiversity—not only for the present but also for future generations—is a responsibility each Filipino must imbibe in order to ensure the sustainable use of our finite natural resources.

Lolong was a saltwater crocodile measured at 6.17 m (20 ft 3 in), and weighed 1,075 kg (2,370 lb), making him the world's largest crocodile ever caught and placed in captivity. Lolong was caught in a Bunawan creek in the province of Agusan del Sur in the Philippines on September 3, 2011. Hunted over a period of 3 weeks, it took around 100 people to bring him onto land. He died on February 10, 2013 from pneumonia and cardiac arrest, after a little over two years five months in captivity, Lolong was estimated to be at least 50 years old.

For this action, I have chosen to support one of GlobalGiving's projects, Solar Power for the Poor in the Philippines. In the slum of Manila and in the isolated villages on the island of Samar in the Philippines, millions of people live in substandard housing with no access to electricity. With no available electricity, families living in extreme poverty use kerosene lamps, candles, and battery-operated torches which are expensive and can cause devastating fires and have a detrimental effect on their health (burns, toxic fumes, etc.) and their environment.

This project will help those families access green and sustainable electricity: to equip themselves with an affordable and robust individual solar kit which provides 3 lighting points and a phone charger. Project will be provided by ATECo, Entrepreneurs du Monde energy access program, which aims to support 1200 families.

    Long-Term Impact
This project will have a rapid effect on:
    1. Families: they benefit from healthy, quality lighting, and are able to save.
    2. Fitters and Collectors: they have an income and are proud to be involved in improving their neighbors' quality of life.
    3. The Environment: this is no longer polluted by greenhouse gas emissions and spent batteries.

D13. Did you know that there are three National Museums of the Philippines located in Manila? These are the National Museum of Fine Arts, National Museum of Anthropology, and the National Museum of Natural History. And today, I was lucky to experience one of these amazing museums and I am excited to share the things I learned in visiting the National Museum of Natural History.

The National Museum of Natural History houses 12 permanent galleries that exhibit the rich biological and geological diversity of the Philippines. It includes creatively curated displays of botanical, zoological, and geological specimens that represent our unique natural history. Situated at the center of the museum is a “Tree of Life” structure that proudly connects all the unique ecosystems in the Philippines, from our magnificent mountain ridges to the outstanding marine reefs.

One of the displays that caught my attention is the Rafflesia flower. Rafflesia species are parasitic plants and holds the recognition as the World's Largest Flower. Rafflesia speciosa is one of the 13 species of Rafflesia found in the Philippines. It was discovered in the mountains of Sibalom Natural Park in Antique, Panay in 2002.

Also called as stinking corpse lily or dead flower because it smells like dead flesh. The strange appearance and smell of the flower is their sneaky evolutionary strategy to lure in carrion flies that usually feed on dead bodies of animals.

Here is the photo of Rafflesia flower, one of the plant species you will find inside the National Museum of Natural History.

Watch out for more posts of my visit in National Museum of the Philippines - National Museum of Natural History. Enjoy learning!
