Jennilyn's actions
Land + Forests
Choose Eco-Friendly Wood and Paper
Trees provide food and habitat for local wildlife species, shade our streets and homes, and help keep our air and water clean by capturing pollutants. Buying products that help protect forests makes a difference. I will only purchase wood, furniture, and paper products from ecologically certified sources such as Forest Stewardship Council.
Biodiversity + Wildlife
Beauty and Personal Products
Beauty and personal products can create a lot of waste. I will spend 15 minutes learning about the beauty and body products I use to see if they are refillable or recyclable. If not, I will reach out to the manufacturer to advocate for those options.
Freshwater + Oceans
Raise Awareness for the Conservation of Freshwater and Oceans
I will spend 60 minutes learning more about the importance of freshwater + ocean conservation, and how I can reduce my water use. I will share what I learn with people in person, on social media, and on the feed.
Action Track: Community
Plant Trees
Trees capture carbon and produce oxygen that is essential to life on earth. I will support this important piece of nature by organizing or joining a community group to plant 1 native trees in my community, public parks, office location, campus or backyard.
Biodiversity + Wildlife
Plastic in Clothing and Water
Synthetic clothing can contain plastic and shed harmful microplastics into our water. I will use a microplastics catcher in my laundry, or install a microplastics filter for my washing machine.
Land + Forests
Zero Waste Day
The impacts of our waste are far reaching. I will create zero waste for an entire day and share my reflections and learnings on the feed.
Land + Forests
Advocate for Forest Protection
Using my voice can help create a more sustainable and just world. I will contact 1 local, regional, or national decision makers to advocate for public policy that protects forests and improves their ability to sequester carbon and nourish biodiversity.
Freshwater + Oceans
Reduce Pollutants in Cleaning
Understanding cleaning product ingredients and their effect on water and biodiversity is helpful to our consumer choices. I will spend 15 minutes learning about how cleaning products affect our water and try making my own cleaning products to reduce pollutants.
Freshwater + Oceans
Low Water Gardening
Grass lawns are water-intensive and on average require about 30 percent of a household’s water consumption. Native plants are water-efficient and help maintain the balance and diversity of local ecosystems. I will plant native species with water-efficient plants to conserve water and improve the habitat, then post a photo on the feed to share.
Action Track: Community
Share My "Why"
I will record a video to share why I am taking action this Earth Month, a sustainable swap I've made, and/or a local conservation effort in my area.
Biodiversity + Wildlife
Invest in Nature
A healthy world needs both our daily actions and support from larger systems. I will spend 15 minutes learning about how I can use my investments and savings to advance environmental sustainability.
Biodiversity + Wildlife
Save the Bees
Bees are vital to ecosystems. To help save the bees, I will learn which local flowers provide nectar and plant them in my backyard or in a pot on my balcony.
Biodiversity + Wildlife
Seek Alternative Gifts and Souvenirs
When traveling, I will seek souvenirs that support local communities and do not cause harm to the environment or wildlife.
Action Track: Community
Sustainability Lunch and Learn
Learning in a social setting can inspire connection and change. I will work with a friend or colleague to plan and host a lunch and learn at work, school, in my neighborhood or other location to learn more about an environmental topic important to me. After the lunch and learn, I will share more about it on the feed.
Climate + Air
Choose Renewable Energy
Renewable energy options are becoming more widespread and accessible. Not only are they good for the planet, they can help save money as well. I will sign up for my utility company's clean/renewable energy option. If my utility does not offer one, I will contact them to advocate for this option in the future.
Climate + Air
Stay on the Ground
Carbon emissions from air travel is harmful to planetary and human health. Instead of traveling by plane, I will find an alternative way to accomplish the goals of an upcoming trip (i.e. telepresence, vacation locally).
Climate + Air
Use Public Transit
Public transportation reduces pollution, improves community, and creates safe streets. I will use public transit 2 miles per day and avoid sending up to (___) lbs of CO2 into Earth's atmosphere.
Freshwater + Oceans
Say No to Plastic Straws
An estimated 71% of seabirds and 30% of turtles have been found with plastics in their stomachs. When marine wildlife ingest plastic, they have a 50% mortality rate. By asking for no straw when placing a drink order, I will keep 1 plastic straw(s) of out of the ocean each day.
Freshwater + Oceans
Use a Reusable Water Bottle
Itr's estimated over a billion water bottles are thrown away each year. Even if they were recycled, that still uses energy and resources from the earth. I will use a reusable bottle and stop purchasing bottled water, saving 2 disposable plastic bottle(s) a day.
Freshwater + Oceans
Cooking Oil Disposal
Pouring cooking oil down the drain can cause damage to waterways and ecosystems. I will learn how to properly dispose of cooking oil to help support healthy ecosystems.
Action Track: Community
Borrow Before I Buy
Why buy something I will only use once or a few times if someone nearby has it for me to borrow, and why not share something I have that someone may only need a few times a year? To reduce my consumption and waste, I will create or support the sharing economy with friends, family, colleagues or neighbors.
Action Track: Community
Keep My Community Clean
At times it may not feel like it's up to us to keep our community clean and healthy, but we all have a role to play. Each day I am outside, I will pick up any litter I see.
Action Track: Community
Volunteer in my Community
I will volunteer 4 hours in my community.
Action Track: Community
Join a Cleanup Effort
I will organize or participate in a trash pickup at a local river, beach, or natural body of water.
Action Track: Community
ATTEND THE ECOCHALLENGE CONSERVATION WEBINAR
On Wed 24th April, I will attend the Earth Month Ecochallenge Webinar on Conservation to learn about what individuals, companies and other organizations can do to promote biodiversity and nature protection.

Jennilyn Hilario 4/27/2024 7:49 AMD27. Today, I'm planning to watch the documentary film Seaspiracy on Netflix. I'm looking forward to learn a lot of things from this documentary, same amount of learning I got from Cowspiracy.-

REFLECTION QUESTIONLand + Forests Zero Waste DayWhat was hard about having a Zero Waste Day? What did you learn about yourself and your habits?
Jennilyn Hilario 4/25/2024 7:21 AMAt first, it was hard to refuse the things you were used to or things you think you need in your daily life. But if you're going to think about its impact, you will realize that cutting from those things is not hard at all. In my zero-waste journey for a day, I learned that I have so much waste that I can improve. I have learned to refuse from things that I really don't need, reduce the things that I needed, apply to reuse things that are reusable, recycle what I cannot refuse, and lastly, I have learned to make natural fertilizer from my food waste.-
John Andre San Miguel 4/26/2024 2:07 AMI imagine that it's really a day of reflections. Hoping to complete mine on Monday! -

Jennilyn Hilario 4/25/2024 6:36 AMD25. Today, the heat index in our city have reached 47 degrees C, it's so hot that sometimes you can't breathe. And this is all because of Global Warming. Big corporations and individuals let's all STOP overloading our atmosphere with too much carbon dioxide and other global warming emissions and let's all support the use of renewable energy. -
Jennilyn Hilario 4/24/2024 5:13 AMD24. As we are nearing the end of the ecochallenge, let's all be reminded about its goal for everyone to create a long-term environmentally conscious habit. I hope we all have learned from participating in this event and we continue to take actions for a better shared future.-
Angela Mae Clarete 4/24/2024 10:41 PMThis challenge really helped me become aware of the current state of our environment. It really is an eye-opener. I will also continue doing the habits that I have developed. 😊🌎

REFLECTION QUESTIONLand + Forests Advocate for Forest ProtectionHigher standards of living are very often dependent on moving our environmental costs elsewhere. What are some specific ways in which the environmental impacts of your own lifestyle might be shifted elsewhere?
Jennilyn Hilario 4/23/2024 5:47 AMCertainly! Here are five ways you can reduce your environmental impact and promote sustainability:-
Food Choices:
- Opt for local and plant-based options. Plant-based diets help decrease the stress on global food systems and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Agricultural expansion, often linked to meat production, contributes to deforestation and biodiversity loss. By choosing more vegetables and fruits, you can improve your health and contribute to a healthier planet1.
-
Travel Wisely:
- Avoid short car trips whenever possible. Car emissions significantly impact air quality and contribute to climate change. Consider walking, cycling, or using public transportation for shorter distances. If you must drive, try carpooling or combining errands to minimize individual trips.
-
Reduce Plastic Use:
- Say no to single-use plastics. These products, such as plastic bags and disposable cutlery, end up in landfills and oceans, harming wildlife and ecosystems. Opt for reusable alternatives like cloth bags, stainless steel straws, and glass containers.
-
Energy Efficiency at Home:
- Improve home energy efficiency by using energy-saving appliances, sealing gaps in windows and doors, and insulating your home. Reducing energy consumption not only lowers your bills but also decreases the overall demand for fossil fuels.
-
Spread Awareness and Advocate:
- Share your sustainable lifestyle choices with others. Start a blog documenting energy-conserving changes in your home, establish a recycling collective with neighbors, or participate in local environmental initiatives. By advocating for sustainable practices, you can inspire positive change in your community2.
Remember, even small actions collectively make a significant impact. Let’s all contribute to a greener and more sustainable future! 🌿🌎-

REFLECTION QUESTIONBiodiversity + Wildlife Save the BeesWhat did you plant for bees in your area? Please consider uploading a photo!
Jennilyn Hilario 4/23/2024 3:16 AMFor bees in my area, I have planted Chrysanthemum and Hydrangea flowers which are both native in Asia. The hydrangea encompasses a broad spectrum of meanings, ranging from abundance, heartfelt emotion, gratitude, and boastfulness, with each interpretation rooted in cultural history, beliefs, and narratives. While the Chrysanthemum carries the symbolic meaning of devoted love, loyalty, happiness, longevity, and joy.

Jennilyn Hilario 4/22/2024 6:11 AMD22. Today, I learned about the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC). It is an essential organization that promotes responsible forest management and sustainable practices. I encourage everyone to support FSC certified stores so we can all protect our forests.
What Does FSC Certification Mean?:- FSC certification ensures that forest products come from legal sources and are sustainably managed.
- It guarantees that goods originate from forests that minimize environmental impact and support forest-dependent indigenous communities.
Here's where can you buy FSC certified products:
