Emily's actions
Take the Pre-Survey
Take the Pre-Event Survey
I’ll take a short pre-survey to share what motivated me to join — and earn 15 points! (If I already took the survey by email, I’ll just mark this action complete to get my points.)
Soil and Food
Grow Something to Eat
Growing food builds resilience by connecting us to the soil and reducing reliance on long supply chains. I will grow edible plants—such as herbs, vegetables, or grains—in my home, balcony, or community space, strengthening both my food security and local biodiversity.
Soil and Food
Learn How to Save Pollinators
Bees and other pollinators are vital to ecosystems and agriculture. I will spend 30 minutes learning how to support local pollinators and take at least one action—such as planting native flowers or avoiding pesticides—to help sustain resilient ecosystems and harvests.
Biodiversity and Wildlife
Remove Invasive Species
Removing invasive species (species that are not naturally found in my area and can outcompete native plants) can help beautify nature around me and protect local biodiversity. I will learn about invasive plants in my area and, if possible, support or participate in at least one effort to beautify nature near me by removing invasive species.
Work and Organizations
Practice Resource Sharing
Sharing strengthens resilience. I will take part in 3 acts of resource-sharing in my organization or with another organization, such as sharing tools, staff skills, or swapping knowledge, to help reduce waste and build collaboration. I will share what I did in the feed to inspire others!
Personal
Prioritize Getting Enough Sleep
Good sleep is essential for a healthy body and mind. I will prioritize getting 30 minutes of quality sleep each night and develop a bedtime routine that supports rest and relaxation.

REFLECTION QUESTIONPersonalHow did improving your sleep affect your energy, focus, or mood? What role does rest play in helping you feel more balanced and capable of handling challenges?
Emily Hickey 4/29/2026 8:07 AMI have young children, so getting a full night's sleep is not under my control. But it is amazing how much more energy, focus, and drive I have on those wonderful nights when I do get 8 uninterrupted hours! -

I explained to my 4-year-old how a marathon is much, much longer than the 5K I ran while pushing him in the jogging stroller. He was impressed: "Wow, they must have a lot of energy!"-
Melissa Cantarow 4/21/2026 9:29 AMHaha I love this! Although pushing a stroller while running 3 miles is no small feat either!

I am so tired. I should probably do the "prioritize getting enough sleep" action.-

I have been doing this and having my daughter do it as well. She is such a night owl, but it has made her much happier in the mornings!

We've been working on making our garden more pollinator-friendly every year. I would love to plant more native plants, but I'm not sure where to find them...maybe local nurseries and garden clubs?-
Prabhakar Devavaram 4/14/2026 8:24 AMThe garden center at Allandale Farm in Boston and Mahoney’s in Brighton are excellent resources, with knowledgeable staff on native plants, during the growing season. -

I mean, how would I know that amateur gardeners/Facebook randoms are any more accurate, or that their plants are what they say they are? Cooperative Extensions are amazing resources, but I've only found lists of plants, not where to obtain said plants. -
Mary Hanks 4/13/2026 11:10 AM- TEAM CAPTAIN
Emily, there should be lots of information available, both in person and online. If you use social media, there are probably many relevant Facebook groups and similar resources. I suggest using caution at commercial nurseries because they sometime provide inaccurate information, such as recommending an inappropriate type of milkweed. Your county probably has an agricultural extension program that can help. Also, many amateur gardeners are happy to share their knowledge. Good luck!

REFLECTION QUESTIONSoil and FoodWhat did you decide to grow, and how did it feel to start (or care for) your plants? What connections did it give you to soil or food resilience?
Emily Hickey 4/09/2026 6:00 AM- Parent 🐻
We got seeds to grow peas, carrots, green beans, and squash. I'm hoping it makes my kids a little more excited about the prospect of eating vegetables...but I'm not holding my breath!-

REFLECTION QUESTIONWork and OrganizationsWhat did you share or reuse, and how did it benefit your organization? How does resource sharing strengthen efficiency and collaboration?
Emily Hickey 4/08/2026 8:06 AM- Parent 🐻
The ice pack recycling program has me thinking... It would be cool if BCH had a "Freecycle" program where we could post resources that are available on our public-facing page and the community could partner with us. I'm thinking things like empty boxes that kids/schools could use to hold things. Styrofoam coolers that plant nurseries/greenhouses could use to ship plants. -
