Alannah's actions
Community and Connection
Meet My Neighbors
Strong neighborhoods are built on connection and trust. I will introduce myself to 1 neighbors or spend time getting to know people in my community.
Community and Connection
Host a Gathering
Bringing people together helps strengthen bonds. I will organize and host a gathering, such as a potluck, coffee meet up, or shared meal, for friends, family, colleagues, or neighbors to foster connection and community spirit.
Community and Connection
Explore My Area
Discovering what’s nearby fosters a deeper connection to my community. I will explore 1 new places in my area, such as parks, historical sites, or local businesses.
Sustainable Innovation
Invest in the Future of Sustainability
Sustainable investments shape a greener future. I will research and invest in companies, funds, or projects that supports sustainability, such as renewable energy, green tech, or sustainable practices. I will share more about who I supported with others on social media or in the Ecochallenge feed.
Land, Water, and Air
Calculate My Carbon Impact
Knowing our carbon footprint is the first step to reducing it. I will calculate my carbon impact and identify lifestyle changes that could reduce the carbon footprint and impacts on the environment. I will share my commitments to lowering my impact on the feed.
Wildlife
Plant (or Adopt) a Plant
Landscaping with native plants, gardening, and having plants inside can have benefits for nature and our health. I will plant or adopt a new plant or grow one from seeds and post a photo of it to the feed.
Land, Water, and Air
Save Water When Washing Dishes
Dishwashers can save water — if used wisely. I will only run the dishwasher when it’s full and skip the pre-rinse to reduce water and energy use. If I don't have a dishwasher, I will turn off the tap as often as possible while washing dishes.
Land, Water, and Air
Collect Rain Water
Rainwater collection reduces water waste and supports gardens. I will install a rain barrel or collect rainwater to use for 1 outdoor tasks, such as watering plants or cleaning.
Wildlife
Use Reusable Bags
Plastic bags do not always end up in landfills and if they aren't properly disposed of. In nature, they can be mistaken for food by many wild animals and harm wildlife. When I go shopping, I will be sure to bring my own bags to reduce waste and the chance that plastic bags could find their way into wildlife habitats.
Sustainable Innovation
Choose a Product Made with Sustainable Materials
Every choice matters. I will purchase or switch to products made from sustainable or recycled materials to support innovation and reduce environmental impact.
Sustainable Innovation
Learn about the Magic of Seaweed
Seaweed is a powerful ally for the planet. I will spend 30 minutes learning how seaweed can improve ocean health, capture carbon, support sustainable food systems, and inspire eco-friendly products.
Wildlife
Learn to Grow Plants Your Way
Growing plants can be rewarding and can create habitats big and small for wildlife. And, we can grow things almost anywhere! I will spend 15 minutes researching options for growing plants either inside or outside.
Empowering the Next Generation
Conduct an Audit with a Young Person
Learning by doing empowers youth. I will conduct an environmental audit — such as a home energy or waste audit — alongside a young person to teach them practical sustainability skills and see what I learn from them as well.
Empowering the Next Generation
Support Youth Climate Activists
Youth activists are leading the charge for a better world. I will spend 20 minutes learning about or supporting youth climate activists through sharing their work or attending their events.
Empowering the Next Generation
Support a Youth-Led Project
Youth-led projects drive innovation and change. I will support youth-led environmental projects by offering time, resources, or encouragement and share how I supported youth on the Ecochallenge feed.
Health and Well-Being
Go Get a Check Up
Regular health check-ups help prevent problems before they start. I will schedule or attend a medical, dental, or mental health check-up to take care of my well-being.
Health and Well-Being
Prepare for Extreme Weather
Extreme weather events like hurricanes, wildfires, and floods can disrupt lives and upend our communities. I will take proactive steps to prepare for extreme weather by safeguarding my home and creating or updating an emergency plan and kit with essential supplies, evacuation routes, and contact information.
Health and Well-Being
Enjoy Fruits and Veggies
Adding fruits and vegetables to our meals nourishes our body and the planet. I will prepare and enjoy 1 servings of a variety of colorful fruits and veggies.

REFLECTION QUESTIONEmpowering the Next GenerationWhat did you learn about the youth climate activists you supported, and how do their efforts inspire you?
Alannah Hedley 4/30/2025 11:40 AMI learned that Mari Copeni has been advocating for clean water and better laws surrounding environmental policies since she was in elementary school. This inspired me as it showed me that school kids can have an impact on the world. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONEmpowering the Next GenerationWhat impressed you most about the youth-led project you supported, and how did your involvement help?
Alannah Hedley 4/30/2025 11:39 AMI was most impressed by the creativity and span of the various CAS projects. I agreed to help judge a film festival and I also participated in a creek clean up. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONEmpowering the Next GenerationWhat did you and the young person learn from conducting the audit together, and how did it change their understanding of sustainability? Did anything change about your understanding of sustainability?
Alannah Hedley 4/30/2025 11:38 AMMy sister learned about the impact of leaving her lights on and she was surprised to learn about vampire power. This changed our understanding of sustainability because we had never considered something as simple as unplugging phone chargers to be good for the environment. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONSustainable InnovationWhat sustainability initiative did you invest in, and what inspired your choice? How do you feel about your role in shaping a greener future through your investment?
Alannah Hedley 4/30/2025 11:21 AMMy family got solar panels for our house and we have a battery too so it can collect and save energy to be used later. We practically never have to use energy from the grid anymore and it feels very cool to know that we can source our energy so independently and cleanly. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONSustainable InnovationWhat sustainable product did you purchase, and how does it align with your values?
Alannah Hedley 4/30/2025 11:20 AMI thrifted a reusable water bottle. By thrifting, it was (somewhat) ethically sourced and the product itself reduces my use of single use plastics. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONSustainable InnovationWhat new insights did you gain about seaweed’s role in combating environmental challenges? Were you surprised how many products you may already be using contain seaweed?
Alannah Hedley 4/30/2025 11:18 AMSeaweed requires very little land, water, or greenhouse gases to grow and it also sequesters carbon. I was surprised that so many plastic items like utensils can be made from seaweed instead. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWildlifeHow difficult was this challenge for you? What made it easy or difficult?
Alannah Hedley 4/30/2025 11:16 AMThis was very easy. My family saves plastic bags in our hall closet to be reused and we have a bin of tote bags to use when we go shopping so the resources are easily available to me. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWildlifeHow did it feel to plant something, and what kind of gardening did you do (indoors, hydroponic, outside in a garden, etc)? What did you plant and where? Feel free to share a photo to the feed!
Alannah Hedley 4/30/2025 11:15 AMIt felt good to plant my aunt's propagated pothos and hang it in my room. It has been doing really well so maybe I'll get to make my own cuttings to propagate from it soon. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWildlifeAre you a gardener or house plant lover? Why or why not? What do you need to elevate your plant care skills?
Alannah Hedley 4/30/2025 11:14 AMI am a house plant lover and I hope to have a couple pothos in my dorm. I want a big garden at my future house when I'm older too. I need to research more about how much water and light different types of plants need.-

REFLECTION QUESTIONLand, Water, and AirHow did changing your dishwashing habits make you more mindful of water use? What other small changes can you make to conserve water in your household?
Alannah Hedley 4/30/2025 10:43 AMRunning the dishwasher only when full saved me time of loading and unloading everyday, I could do it once every two or three days instead, which helped me appreciate how easy and otherwise beneficial it is to save water. Another small change I've made is collecting water in a bucket while running the water to heat up for a shower. This bucket is then dumped on our lawn.
