What is resilience?

Explore Resilience in Nature

Resilience is all around us in the natural world. I will spend 15 minutes outdoors looking for examples of resilience—such as plants regrowing, animals adapting, or seasonal cycles—and reflect on what they teach about thriving through change.

COMPLETED 24
DAILY ACTIONS

Soil and Food

Learn How to Save Pollinators

Bees and other pollinators are vital to ecosystems and agriculture. I will spend 30 minutes learning how to support local pollinators and take at least one action—such as planting native flowers or avoiding pesticides—to help sustain resilient ecosystems and harvests.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

What is resilience?

Learn About Ecological Resilience

Resilience is part of how nature works. I will spend 15 minutes learning about ecological resilience—how ecosystems adapt to disturbances and renew themselves through cycles of growth and renewal.

COMPLETED 24
DAILY ACTIONS

Take the Pre-Survey

Take the Pre-Event Survey

I’ll take a short pre-survey to share what motivated me to join — and earn 15 points! (If I already took the survey by email, I’ll just mark this action complete to get my points.)

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Water

Collect Rain Water

Rainwater collection reduces water waste and supports local needs. I will install a rain barrel or collect rainwater to use for outdoor tasks, such as watering plants or cleaning.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

What is resilience?

Learn About Ordinary Magic

Resilience is an everyday magic in all of us. I will spend 15 minutes learning about resilience and psychologist Ann Masten’s concept of “ordinary magic,” which shows how people adapt and thrive through small, daily strengths.

COMPLETED 24
DAILY ACTIONS

Water

Take Shorter Showers

Conserving water helps protect this precious resource. I will shorten my showers to 5 minutes to save water and reduce energy use - each time saving up to 20 gallons (75 L) of water!

COMPLETED 24
DAILY ACTIONS

Biodiversity and Wildlife

Learn About Biodiversity Hotspots

Biodiversity hotspots are places with many unique species that are also at risk. I will spend 15 minutes learning about one hotspot and reflect on why protecting it matters for resilience.

Earth Day, celebrated annually on April 22, raises awareness about environmental issues and inspires global action to protect our planet.

Earth Day was first celebrated on April 22, 1970, initiated by U.S. Senator Gaylord Nelson after witnessing environmental damage, including the 1969 Santa Barbara oil spill, and inspired by youth activism and anti-war movements. The first event involved over 20 million Americans, making it one of the largest single-day demonstrations in U.S. history.

I spent my weekend exploring South GA's Hotspots where i got to see frogs , salamanders, different fish and insects all coexisting in one wedding venue haha i didn't get any pictures of the animals but enjoy the scenery ,

its important we protect these species in Georgia as its among the top U.S. states for native aquatic species, with over 127 mussel species, 265 fish species, 70 crayfish species, and 84 aquatic snails ( Department Of Natural Resources Division. ) Many of these species are rare or imperiled, with significant portions of their global range occurring within Georgia
    .

Protecting hotspots ensures these species survive and can adapt to environmental changes.

Ecological resilience refers to the ability of an ecosystem to recover from disturbances, adapt, and maintain its essential functions and services. This concept is crucial, especially in the face of climate change, habitat destruction, and other anthropogenic pressures.

Wetlands are a prime example of resilience. These ecosystems serve as crucial buffers against environmental stressors. For instance, after being subjected to pollution or hydrological disturbances, wetlands have the ability to regenerate. The extensive root systems of wetland plants can stabilize soil and promote water purification. In Florida, the Everglades, often referred to as the “River of Grass,” displays remarkable resilience. Despite facing threats like urban development, invasive species, and nutrient loading, conservation efforts have shown that restoring water flow and reducing pollutants can reinvigorate these ecosystems.

How did shortening your showers affect your awareness of water conservation? What other water-saving practices can you adopt in your daily routine?

because it turns a routine into a mindful habit. When you see the gallons saved,
for example, cutting a 10‑minute shower to 5 minutes can save about 10–25 gallons per shower, or over 3,000 gallons per year!

you start to recognize the hidden cost of water use. This awareness often extends beyond showers, encouraging you to check other habits like turning off the tap while brushing teeth, fixing leaks, and using water‑efficient appliances

(This one isnt mine but I keep forgetting to get a picture of the one i made, )
Collecting the rain water has made me think a lot about resource use as i upcycled litter containers to help catch the rain,
we haven't gotten much rain this week yet, but last night i was able to fill a quarter of a jug so now i have water for the garden and cleaning around the house that i don't have to turn the faucet on for

Did you know that Bats are pollinators?

Bats are vital pollinators in ecosystems, supporting over 500 plant species worldwide, including economically important crops like agave (used for tequila), bananas, guavas, and saguaro cacti.

Their ability to fly long distances ensures gene flow between widely spaced plants, maintaining genetic diversity and ecosystem stability as it also enhances plant resistance to pests and diseases and contributes to agricultural productivity.

But Bat populations are declining at an alarming rate which is starting to effect our crops.

Some actions I took to help in bat conservations was

1.) limiting herbicide and pesticide use, many bats eat insects, so limiting these chemicals gives bats healthy foods to eat,

2.) Turning off porch lights as they rely on darkness to survive

    3.) Installing a bat house
-> here is a helpful link (Bat Gardens - Bat Conservation International)
-Having a bat colony in your backyard can help with mosquito control!

    4.)
Learn about the bats in your area.

Bats are often misunderstood! Share what you learn to help bust some of the myths about bats !

    Starting off STRONG this week!

Did you know? Biodiversity hotspots are regions rich in endemic species that are under significant threat from human activities, covering just 2.5% of Earth's land but supporting over half of the world’s endemic plants and nearly 43% of terrestrial vertebrates,

To qualify as a biodiversity hotspot on Myers' 2000 edition of the hotspot map, a region must meet two strict criteria: it must contain at least 1,500 species of vascular plants (more than 0.5% of the world's total) as endemics, and it has to have lost at least 70% of its primary vegetation!

Globally, 36 zones qualify under this definition, the more you know
