I will organize or participate in a trash pickup at a local river, beach, or natural body of water.

UNCOMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Action Track: Community

Raise Awareness for the Conservation of Freshwater and Oceans

I will spend 30 minutes learning more about the importance of freshwater + ocean conservation, and how I can reduce my water use. I will share what I learn with people in person, on social media, and on the feed.

UNCOMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Freshwater + Oceans

Go Plastic-Free

Millions of tons of plastic is produced each year worldwide. Each day, I will conduct a plastics audit of what I buy and use throughout the challenge (kitchen, bathroom, personal care products, etc.), to see how single-use plastic shows up in my life. I will find plastic-free alternatives to these products and advocate for alternatives to single-use packaging at local grocery stores, product manufacturers, at work, or on campus.

COMPLETED 3
DAILY ACTIONS

Biodiversity + Wildlife

Leave No Trace

I will respect and protect biotic communities by practicing the seven principles of Leave No Trace whenever I am outside.

COMPLETED 2
DAILY ACTIONS

Freshwater + Oceans

Cooking Oil Disposal

Pouring cooking oil down the drain can cause damage to waterways and ecosystems. I will learn how to properly dispose of cooking oil to help support healthy ecosystems.

COMPLETED 4
DAILY ACTIONS

Biodiversity + Wildlife

Grow Local

I will research and plant a garden filled with native fruits, vegetables, and flowers to nurture local wildlife and ecosystems. I will find nearby nurseries that offer plants native to my area.

COMPLETED 5
DAILY ACTIONS

Climate + Air

Declutter My Home Without the Landfill

Each day, I will learn about responsible ways to dispose of items and de-clutter, clean, donate, repurpose or recycle unneeded items in my home to make sure that what I get rid of doesn't go into the landfill.

COMPLETED 4

Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.

To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

A bit of a surprise, but also an overwhelming mountain, has been plastic bags. Everything is wrapped in them. Everything! From bread to wrapping of new products. I've even seen the individually wrapped potatoes! 😞

I'm very proud of myself for minimizing the amount of grocery bags I get from the store. I have several reusable grocery bags in the trunk of my car and got myself into the habit of opening the trunk as soon as I park at the store. I also keep the bags next to the door at home, so I remember to take them back to my car. (That habit took me a while.)

I have, however, noticed a large amount of the clear produce bags finding a home in my bag pile. Since the pile grows faster than I can use them, I've tried to shrink it by using them for my trash (instead of buying trash bags). I use a large oatmeal container as a trash can, so the produce bags fit in it. If the bags are relatively clean, I twist and squish them, then put one or two into my reusable bags to use at the store for the more fragile produce, like herbs or wet kale.

I no longer use the clear produce bags for larger produce at all because they produce will still have to get washed when I get home, so most fruits and veggies go directly into the cart, then into the reusable bags during checkout. This keeps me from a quiring new produce bags to add to the pile.

I still have a large pile, but the rate at which it is increasing is less. I'm also teaching family members about adopting the same habits.

I realized long ago that, for me, when growing plants, it's easier and cheaper growing from seed. In 2008, I planned a mixture of native flowers, including California Poppies, in my mom's back yard. The first year, nothing happened. The next year, my little seed area sprouted and a small patch of orange poppies took over part of the back yard. So Mom collected the seeds and planted them in the front. The following year, and ever year since, her front yard has been a bright orange super bloom and the talk of the neighborhood! ☺️
