Empowering the Next Generation
Learn about a Young Leader
Young people are making a big impact on the world. I will spend 15 minutes learning about a young leader working on environmental or social justice issues to get inspired and share their story on social media or the Ecochallenge feed.
Empowering the Next Generation
Support Youth Climate Activists
Youth activists are leading the charge for a better world. I will spend 15 minutes learning about or supporting youth climate activists through sharing their work or attending their events.
Empowering the Next Generation
Support a Youth-Led Project
Youth-led projects drive innovation and change. I will support youth-led environmental projects by offering time, resources, or encouragement and share how I supported youth on the Ecochallenge feed.
Wildlife
Use Reusable Bags
Plastic bags do not always end up in landfills and if they aren't properly disposed of. In nature, they can be mistaken for food by many wild animals and harm wildlife. When I go shopping, I will be sure to bring my own bags to reduce waste and the chance that plastic bags could find their way into wildlife habitats.
Wildlife
Learn the 7 Principles of Leave No Trace
Leave No Trace means enjoying nature responsibly by minimizing our impact and leaving the environment as we found it, or better. I will spend 5 minutes learning about the seven core principles to minimize my impact while enjoying the outdoors.
Wildlife
Try At Least One Principle of Leave No Trace
After learning about the Principles of Leave No Trace, I will take at least one action to minimize my impact on the outdoors while enjoying nature. I will post what I tried to the feed to encourage others to do the same!
Wildlife
Learn to be a Responsible Tourist
Being a responsible tourist means not disturbing wildlife and choosing eco-friendly tour operators and destinations that prioritize wildlife conservation and respect animal welfare. I will spend 15 minutes researching ways to travel responsibly to ensure my adventures support, rather than harm, wildlife and their habitats.

REFLECTION QUESTIONEmpowering the Next GenerationWhat impressed you most about the youth-led project you supported, and how did your involvement help?
Cayden Hanson 4/30/2025 10:44 AMI helped support the Mediums of Mental Health youth-led initiative by following and reposting their recent activity, which involved creating the "Savannah of Serenity." My involvement helped because it spread the message of mental health awareness and their excellent activity in the community, which furthers mental health awareness. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONEmpowering the Next GenerationWhat did you learn about the youth climate activists you supported, and how do their efforts inspire you?
Cayden Hanson 4/28/2025 9:53 AMI learned about Leah Namugerwa, a youth climate activist from Uganda. Leah began leading school strikes for climate in her country and launched a campaign called "Birthday Trees," where she plants trees to celebrate birthdays and encourages others to do the same. She also advocates for the enforcement of environmental laws in Uganda and speaks out about the urgent need for climate action. She inspires me because she leads her community in a place where progressive activism isn't 'mainstream,' so she is going against the grain. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONEmpowering the Next GenerationWho is the young leader you learned about, and what at inspired you most about them? How can you support or amplify the work of young leaders in your own community?
Cayden Hanson 4/28/2025 9:48 AMI researched Marley Dias, an activist and author who collected over 15,000 books with black female protagonists. She inspires me because, from the age of 11, she was passionate about a topic and worked to turn her idea into reality during her initiative. I can support young leaders by talking to the youth and inspiring them to complete their own initiatives similar to Marley Dias. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWildlifeWhat is one way you can reduce your impact on nature the next time you spend time outdoors, and how might that action help preserve the environment for others?
Cayden Hanson 4/28/2025 9:15 AMOne way I can reduce my impact is by staying on marked trails, which helps protect plants and animal habitats from being trampled. This action helps maintain healthy ecosystems and ensures that future visitors can enjoy the natural beauty without causing further harm. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWildlifeHow difficult was this challenge for you? What made it easy or difficult?
Cayden Hanson 4/28/2025 9:13 AMThe challenge was very easy for me since I use reusable bags most of the time when I go to the grocery store, because it saves me money. Also, I already have reusable bags in my trunk, just in case I need them for groceries or other uses. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWildlifeWhat did you learn about how tourism impacts wildlife, and how can you make more conscious choices when planning a trip? How do you think your travel decisions can contribute to wildlife conservation and respectful interactions with nature?
Cayden Hanson 4/28/2025 9:06 AMI learned that tourism can have both positive and negative effects on wildlife. While eco-tourism can support conservation efforts and raise awareness, irresponsible tourism, such as feeding animals, disturbing their habitats, or supporting exploitative attractions, can cause serious harm. Wildlife may become stressed, alter their natural behaviors, or even become dependent on humans for food, which threatens their survival. I can choose eco-friendly tour operators that prioritize animal welfare and habitat protection. In Japan, I'll avoid attractions that use animals for entertainment or keep them in poor conditions. Instead, I’ll look for experiences that observe animals respectfully in their natural environments.
