How did shortening your showers affect your awareness of water conservation?

Shortening my showers made me more mindful of how much water I use, especially during routines I usually don’t think twice about. Growing up with military showers taught me efficiency, but caring for my curly hair requires more time and water. Being intentional—like turning the water off when I’m not actively rinsing—helped me balance personal care with conservation.

What other water‑saving practices can you adopt in your daily routine?

I’ve started using a spray bottle during parts of my hair routine to reduce running water. Turning the water off while conditioning or detangling also makes a big difference. Other small changes, like only running appliances with full loads or being mindful of sink use, can further reduce overall water use.

I am going to try the spray bottle as well. I never through of that. I also have 3 daughters that this could help with.

Using a spray bottle to save water is a great idea, especially for a curly hair routine. It's important to be intentional about the different ways we use water since we tend to take it for granted. I've started shortening my showers as well and feel like it's a better use of time as well as water.

What preservation method did you try, and how did it work for you? How can these practices help reduce waste and improve food security?

What preservation method did you try, and how did it work for you?

I prepped my fruits and vegetables ahead of time and stored them in mason jars with towels to absorb extra moisture. I also stored some produce in filtered water to help keep it fresh. This method worked well for me because my fruits and vegetables stayed crisp longer, were easy to grab, and didn’t spoil as quickly.

How can these practices help reduce waste and improve food security?

These practices help reduce food waste by keeping produce fresh longer, which means less food gets thrown away. When food lasts longer and is easier to use, people can make better use of what they have. This can improve food security by helping households stretch their groceries further and rely less on frequent replacements.

This is definitely a goal of mine as I work through meal prepping to keep me on top of my health goals. I appreciate you bringing knowledge around the mason jars. The goal is to have zero waste for me especially right now when the price of goods is so high! I have also been using reusable ziplock baggies when packing my lunch :)
