Land, Water, and Air

Understand My Water Footprint

Each of us has a water footprint, directly linked to our daily activities as well as the water required in the production of things we use each day. Understanding our water use is important for a healthy planet. I will calculate my water footprint and look for a few ways I can reduce consumption or waste, then share what I learned on the feed.

Learn About Water Justice

Access to clean water is a basic right, yet not everyone has it. I will spend 10 minutes learning about water justice issues and who is affected.

UNCOMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Land, Water, and Air

Save Water When Washing Dishes

Dishwashers can save water — if used wisely. I will only run the dishwasher when it’s full and skip the pre-rinse to reduce water and energy use. If I don't have a dishwasher, I will turn off the tap as often as possible while washing dishes.

COMPLETED 5
DAILY ACTIONS

Land, Water, and Air

Take Shorter Showers

Conserving water helps protect this precious resource. I will shorten my showers to 5 minutes to save water and reduce energy use - each time saving up to 20 gallons (75 L) of water!

COMPLETED 1
DAILY ACTION

Land, Water, and Air

Join a Cleanup Effort

Working together to clean up public spaces helps the environment and builds community. I will participate in 1 community cleanup efforts in my neighborhood or local area.

Learn the 7 Principles of Leave No Trace

Leave No Trace means enjoying nature responsibly by minimizing our impact and leaving the environment as we found it, or better. I will spend 10 minutes learning about the seven core principles to minimize my impact while enjoying the outdoors.

UNCOMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Wildlife

Plant (or Adopt) a Plant

Landscaping with native plants, gardening, and having plants inside can have benefits for nature and our health. I will plant or adopt a new plant or grow one from seeds and post a photo of it to the feed.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Wildlife

Learn to Grow Plants Your Way

Growing plants can be rewarding and can create habitats big and small for wildlife. And, we can grow things almost anywhere! I will spend 10 minutes researching options for growing plants either inside or outside.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Wildlife

Use Reusable Bags

Plastic bags do not always end up in landfills and if they aren't properly disposed of. In nature, they can be mistaken for food by many wild animals and harm wildlife. When I go shopping, I will be sure to bring my own bags to reduce waste and the chance that plastic bags could find their way into wildlife habitats.

COMPLETED 1
DAILY ACTION

Wildlife

Enjoy a Meatless Meal

Producing 1 kg of beef emits as much greenhouse gas as driving 150 miles, meanwhile, 1 kg of veggies or grains leaves a much lighter footprint! This week, I’ll shrink my climate impact by having 1 meatless meals and/or 1 vegan meals each day.

COMPLETED 13
DAILY ACTIONS

Community and Connection

Explore My Area

Discovering what’s nearby fosters a deeper connection to my community. I will explore 1 new places in my area, such as parks, historical sites, or local businesses.

I was doing so well until the "virtual water use" came in and then it tanked my footprint. I was still below average at least.

When we bought our house, I noticed that our upstairs/main toilet had dual flush options which I really appreciated. I'm really interested in making these kinds of switches that make it easy to save water.

I am motivated to get a rain barrel or two and use that for my gardening. One of the questions asked about a gray water reuse system. That is certainly more intensive but I would love to implement that one day. Our house came with a sprinkler system which I was reluctant to use until the reality of Colorado summers on my plants hit. It would be awesome to use a grey water system instead.

The virtual water that really did a number was shopping habits, eating meat, and pet food (though much smaller than the other two). Even though my shopping habits are low, it still has a huge impact since it's often new items. It's really difficult to constantly thrift items when you're looking for a specific item to buy in the next week or so. As usual, the meat eating takes a huge chunk. It's so hard to make a consistent commitment to eating vegetarian, especially when I love so many different foods. As for the pets, making sure they are consistently getting the right nutrition/diet is most important to me and on a busy/hard day I can't get takeout cat food. Even though these have the biggest impact, they are significantly more difficult to implement changes on.

Noo!...I took the quiz and I'm a climate villain :( there's a lot of suggestions.

The results from the quiz suggests:
    • Adding more insulation to my home. I did have additional insulation added to the attic space in my house when I first moved but getting into the wall insulation can be pricey. All things considered, despite having 4 bedrooms, my house is quite small (1950's tiny bedrooms and basement bedrooms). We try to open windows in summer and wear thicker clothing in the winter to offset the poorer energy efficiency of the house.
    • Switch to climate friendly heating source. Maybe one day if I see the end of the furnace's life, but it was replaced shortly before we moved in so it has a long time to go - seems like a waste of money to replace a perfectly good unit. I would prefer the option to buy renewable natural gas from my utility.
    • Reduce flights - I just don't think it's realistic for my mental well being. I enjoy travel and seeing people "back home"/being there for important moments. Again, I think something could be said for the industry being more renewable then asking me to stop travelling. Although we do make several treks by car when it's feasible.
    • Environmentally friendly car - I wanted to buy an EV for my next vehicle until that next vehicle purchase came up much sooner than expected. My household is down to 1 gas vehicle currently (usually have 2) so I would like for the second vehicle to be electric but that doesn't really save energy aside from trying to use the electric one more than the gas vehicle.
    • Always get environmentally friendly car for taxi/uber - I think this is an easy one to switch to going forward that I'll try to "always" consciously select it.
    • Walk or bike more - Walking or biking in my area is reserved for pretty much recreational travel. It's not feasible to take a bike or walk to the grocery store when I have so many groceries to bring back. Everything else is too far to reasonably bike...plus I'd need to purchase a bike.
    • Eat less beef/lamb and eat more vegetarian meals - I have been working on this one. My sticking point is I love a good cheeseburger for comfort meal for beef. Also, I have trouble with getting variety in protein doing strictly vegetarian (I need to mix it up with my meals or I will start hating certain ingredients). Overall I have been trying to be more conscious about vegetarian meals so I will just keep trying!
    • Eat seasonally - I could definitely be much better about this and be willing to try but that would also require truly understanding what's seasonal in my area
    • Local foods - I would love this, the convenience of one grocery store often gets in my way. I'm willing to be try being more conscious though
    • Climate friendly pet food - I didn't even know this was a thing! I'd love to but also have to consider the health of my pets and their preferences so I'd need to do research first.
    • Avoid palm products - I read an interesting book that suggested the yield of palm farms is much better than alternatives for the given area. The true problem is unsustainable palm farming. I honestly haven't looked into the palm products I use or don't. Certainly something to look into.
    • Reduce plastics - I have been trying to do this but sometimes it can be so hard to avoid. I need the products and they come in packaging whether I like it or not. But my state doesn't have plastic bags anymore so my grocery bags are always reusable.
    • Prioritize wood/hemp/bamboo products - This can be difficult. I tried switching to bamboo toothbrushes once but it resulted in cavities because they weren't cleaning my teeth well enough for what I needed. I did build a greenhouse with wood instead of PVC though.
    • Shop less and second hand - This is interesting because I didn't say I shopped a lot. I do try to rent tools rather than buying unless I find myself renting often. I try to reduce my shopping for financial reasons though so it's limited my shopping overall. Much of what I'm buying doesn't have much of a second hand market though.

I had protein waffles for breakfast and an artichoke feta sandwich for lunch. I really love when restaurant's have good vegetarian options because I never feel like I'm "missing" anything. Snarf's and Cheba Hut have great vegetarian sandwiches that I almost always choose veg. I also like that there are so many vegetables in vegetarian foods because many meat focused meals have minimal or no veggies included (most meat dishes at Chinese food restaurants, steak/roast beef sandwich, etc.).

Yum - artichoke & feta. I 100% agree. So many ways to make veggies delicious. Veggies should be the star of the show - even when paired with meat but that is rarely the case at most restaurants.

I love the idea of having plants all over my house and a full garden. In practice...I have a corner with the remaining plants that manage to thrive in my house. My garden I usually get set up in spring and then have a hard time maintaining through the summer. To elevate my plant skills, this year I bought a soil tester which measures moisture, ph, nutrients and light. I'm hoping to use this to get my existing plants looking even better and maybe add to it. I also might benefit from picking easier plants to scatter in the rest of the house like spider plants.

I love that idea too - plants everywhere! But I hear you - the conditions in the home aren't always ideal. Spider plants, pothos and bamboo are my go-to plants for the spaces where not much else can make it. They don't thrive but they survive. I'd love to hear how the soil tester helps you make adjustments!
