Understand My Water Footprint

Each of us has a water footprint, directly linked to our daily activities as well as the water required in the production of things we use each day. Understanding our water use is important for a healthy planet. I will calculate my water footprint and look for a few ways I can reduce consumption or waste, then share what I learned on the feed.

Land + Forests

Choose Eco-Friendly Wood and Paper

Trees provide food and habitat for local wildlife species, shade our streets and homes, and help keep our air and water clean by capturing pollutants. Buying products that help protect forests makes a difference. I will only purchase wood, furniture, and paper products from ecologically certified sources such as Forest Stewardship Council.

COMPLETED

Land + Forests

Zero Waste Day

The impacts of our waste are far reaching. I will create zero waste for an entire day and share my reflections and learnings on the feed.

UNCOMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Climate + Air

Consume only Needs vs Wants

The more stuff we consume, the more greenhouse gasses we put into the atmosphere. I will adopt a "Needs Vs. Wants" approach this month and only buy things I need.

COMPLETED 17
DAILY ACTIONS

Climate + Air

Declutter My Home Without the Landfill

Each day, I will learn about responsible ways to dispose of items and de-clutter, clean, donate, repurpose or recycle unneeded items in my home to make sure that what I get rid of doesn't go into the landfill.

COMPLETED 17
DAILY ACTIONS

Climate + Air

Weekly Meal Planning

One third of all food produced worldwide is wasted, and so is the energy it takes to produce and transport that food. I will reduce food waste and save money by planning a weekly menu, only buying the ingredients I need and eating what I planned each day.

COMPLETED 17
DAILY ACTIONS

Climate + Air

Choose Renewable Energy

Renewable energy options are becoming more widespread and accessible. Not only are they good for the planet, they can help save money as well. I will sign up for my utility company's clean/renewable energy option. If my utility does not offer one, I will contact them to advocate for this option in the future.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Climate + Air

Low Carbon Diet

Carbon is emitted into the atmosphere in a variety of ways, including through the foods we eat and food we waste. I will learn about low carbon foods and replace higher carbon foods with them in my diet.

COMPLETED 17
DAILY ACTIONS

Climate + Air

Online Energy Audit

Energy use and waste is often invisible. I will complete an online energy audit of my home, office, or dorm room and identify my next steps for saving energy.

COMPLETED

Action Track: Community

Keep My Community Clean

At times it may not feel like it's up to us to keep our community clean and healthy, but we all have a role to play. Each day I am outside, I will pick up any litter I see.

COMPLETED 17
DAILY ACTIONS

Action Track: Community

Borrow Before I Buy

Why buy something I will only use once or a few times if someone nearby has it for me to borrow, and why not share something I have that someone may only need a few times a year? To reduce my consumption and waste, I will create or support the sharing economy with friends, family, colleagues or neighbors.

Needs or wants? One of the problems in understanding wants and needs is realizing that sometimes our needs can cause us to spend more than we should, meaning needs can turn into wants. There are so many purchases that I could have saved money and headache on by just waiting it out and giving myself more time to think it over. It’s amazing how little we need - to survive, yet how much we can waste on things we “think” we need!

Brilliant thought! I guess nowadays it's almost only about the wants, and the commercials and marketing exactly know how to trigger these and make us feeling that they are needs.

Climate + Air Low Carbon Diet
Which high carbon foods will you eat less of, and what are some low carbon options you'll choose instead?

    Today's recipe:

Veggie “Pasta” with Lemon, Chives & Goat Cheese

There's no actual pasta in this recipe, but spiralized vegetables do a fabulous job of mimicking the real deal. The squash, carrots, and shallots are first sautéed in chicken broth, then flavored with goat cheese, lemon zest, and lemon juice for a punch of citrusy brightness. Stir in the chives, season with salt and pepper, top with more cheese, and your delicious pasta substitute is ready to go - eat :-)

Climate + Air Weekly Meal Planning
How did it feel to plan out your meals and stick to them in an effort to reduce food waste?

    I downloaded Munch application.

The Hungarian start-up Munch is on the mission to stop wasting food. The team has developed an app that allows you to buy leftovers from restaurants and bakeries at a low price. Customers can go and pick up perfectly good food that would otherwise end up in the bin at the end of the day. Munch, in a unique way, is also thinking about those in need by offering a charity service as well.

Awesome app, thank you for sharing. Need to search a similar tool in my area, but might be difficult cause I’m living on the countryside. When I was doing my civil service some decades ago I collected the bread from the bakeries in the evening and gave it to homeless people, that was also giving food waste a purpose.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Climate + Air Consume only Needs vs Wants
Consuming only what we need vs. what we want can be really hard to do. What has been challenging about committing to this action for a month? What have you learned about yourself? Will you change any habits going forward?

How does the act of picking up litter connect you more to your community?

    Krisztina Guba's avatar
    Krisztina Guba 4/01/2024 11:06 AM
When we pick up litter in our communities, we set an example for others, including our children. As we join together in this shared mission, we build stronger bonds within our neighbors, united by a common purpose.
