Robyn's actions

Biodiversity + Wildlife

Save the Bees

Bees are vital to ecosystems. To help save the bees, I will learn which local flowers provide nectar and plant them in my backyard or in a pot on my balcony.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Freshwater + Oceans

Use a Reusable Water Bottle

Itr's estimated over a billion water bottles are thrown away each year. Even if they were recycled, that still uses energy and resources from the earth. I will use a reusable bottle and stop purchasing bottled water, saving 1 disposable plastic bottle(s) a day.

COMPLETED 29
DAILY ACTIONS

Freshwater + Oceans

Understand My Water Footprint

Each of us has a water footprint, directly linked to our daily activities as well as the water required in the production of things we use each day. Understanding our water use is important for a healthy planet. I will calculate my water footprint and look for a few ways I can reduce consumption or waste, then share what I learned on the feed.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Freshwater + Oceans

Cooking Oil Disposal

Pouring cooking oil down the drain can cause damage to waterways and ecosystems. I will learn how to properly dispose of cooking oil to help support healthy ecosystems.

COMPLETED 3
DAILY ACTIONS

Action Track: Community

Raise Awareness for the Conservation of Freshwater and Oceans

I will spend 30 minutes learning more about the importance of freshwater + ocean conservation, and how I can reduce my water use. I will share what I learn with people in person, on social media, and on the feed.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Action Track: Community

Join a Cleanup Effort

I will organize or participate in a trash pickup at a local river, beach, or natural body of water.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Action Track: Community

Volunteer in my Community

I will volunteer 20 hours in my community.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Land + Forests

Regenerative Agriculture and Me

Regenerative agriculture focuses on farming and ranching in a way that supports life and restores the soil. I will spend 30 minutes learning about regenerative agriculture and find out if any nearby farms practice regenerative agriculture.

UNCOMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Land + Forests

Compost Food Waste

Food in the landfill is one of the main sources of greenhouse gasses. I will avoid sending up to .69 lbs (.31 kg) of food waste to the landfill per day by composting my food.

COMPLETED 24
DAILY ACTIONS

Land + Forests

Forest-Friendly Foods

I will look for sustainable palm oil products with the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSP) label. I will replace or remove the palm oil, coffee, and cocoa products in my current diet that are known to contribute to deforestation and opt for ones that help sustain healthy communities and forests.

COMPLETED 0
DAILY ACTIONS

Land + Forests

Borrow Before I Buy

Why buy something I will only use once or a few times if someone nearby has it for me to borrow, and why not share something I have that someone may only need a few times a year? To reduce my consumption and waste, I will create or support the sharing economy with friends, family, colleagues or neighbors.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Land + Forests

Keep My Community Clean

At times it may not feel like it's up to us to keep our community clean and healthy, but we all have a role to play. Each day I am outside, I will pick up any litter I see.

COMPLETED 11
DAILY ACTIONS

Every year I look forward to the native ground bees that populate my area. These bees pop up from the ground holes around the edges and cracks in the local sidewalks. Many people are afraid of these bees, but they are harmless. In the past I spent many hours researching the bees and their habitat and published this information in a plea to the community to no kill the bees, thinking they have a swarm of hostile bees near their home. I routinely educate any and all passersby my home on these wonderful little creatures. Generally these bees pop up in early June, but I'm thrilled that a second variety of bee has also decided to setup homemaking in my sidewalks - these bees are smaller than the other annual ground bees (which are smaller than the standard honey bee) and more solitary. They also hatch earlier than the other bees so just happy to have more visitors and pollinators.

I was recognized this month as the Oregon MRC Volunteer of the year! My volunteering in the MRC (board member), C.E.R.T., Coast Guard AUX, Local genealogy club (board member), Local history museum (Docent and board member), and supporting a local weekly 'snack pack' program as well as taking and ensuring clothes and books from an estate sale business (who would otherwise throw all of this material into the landfill) are distributed to agencies who donate or resell them are all examples of what one person can contribute to the betterment of my community.

Having lived in California for many years I personally do a very good job of conserving water. What is frustrating is the virtual water that I can't control. My personal water use is 90 cubic feet of water per month (673 gallons, or less than 22.5gallons per day (U.S. Average is 80-100 gallons). My virtual consumption is sadly much higher.

Volunteered for a cleanup with the local area but was unable to attend. So I did my own community cleanup as an alternative.

I attended a conference out of my area which allowed more time for non-work and home activities in the evening. As a result, I used the time to walk the neighborhood where my Inn was located and picked up trash in the local park. I also spent a couple hours enjoying the early evening sunshine and weeded a portion of the garden at the Inn in appreciation for the wonderful accommodations and beautiful gardens.

Land + Forests Compost Food Waste
New to composting? Be sure to check out the action resource links to learn tips and more about it. As you transition from throwing food away to composting, what do you notice about how much you are tossing? How will you use your compost once it is ready?

I don't generally eat at home but do understand the importance of composting. I pick up coffee grounds from local coffee shops for my garden and have encourage and had one restaurant convert to composting (and feeing pigs) with their restaurant trash.

I am a strong advocate for Reduce, Reuse and Recycle. I am partnered with a local thrift shop that doesn't handle clothes, books or videos. When they receive estates where they take everything given, I take the clothes, books and videos and share them with other agencies. I provide the clothes to local charities who provide clothes to students, seniors and houseless individuals. I share the books with several Little Free Libraries, a local senior center, a local physician's office, the library Friends of the Library groups, and if applicable, with a local history group and/or museum. Books which cannot be reused due to damage are recycled along with my regular paper recycling. I handle at least 1-2 tons of material a year.

Freshwater + Oceans Use a Reusable Water Bottle
What did you learn about the amount of plastic we consume and what actions will you take to reduce your use of plastic?

I switched from individual bottled water to a 55 oz "Big Gulp" after checking my local water source water quality reports. I now use tap water and ice cubes instead of bottled water. There is about 48 oz of water per jug, so that is equal to 3 plastic bottles of water saved. I also recycle all bottles found, further reducing the generation of new plastic.
