Join a Group

Belonging to a group can help build friendships and a sense of purpose. I will explore online or in-person groups or clubs that share my interests or goals and join a group to connect with others.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Soil and Food

Learn About Sustainable Farming Practices

Healthy soils and resilient food systems depend on how we grow food. I will spend 10 minutes learning about farming practices such as regenerative agriculture, agroecology, or permaculture, and reflect on how they support both people and the planet.

COMPLETED 29
DAILY ACTIONS

Soil and Food

Choose Water-Smart Foods

The foods we eat carry hidden “water footprints” that affect rivers, soils, and communities worldwide. I will reduce servings of high-water-use foods and choose alternatives that help conserve water and support more resilient food systems.

COMPLETED 29

Defenders of Wildlife works on the ground, in the courts, and on Capitol Hill to protect and restore imperiled wildlife and habitats across North America. Together, we can ensure a future for the wildlife and wild places we all love.
When wildlife is in danger, they can't speak up for themselves—so we speak for them. Defenders of Wildlife deploys a wide range of tools and tactics, from policy analyses and advocacy, to litigation, innovative science and technology programs and field conservation. Every Defenders program aligns with or contributes to at least one of three broad imperatives:

    • Prevent species and their habitats from becoming imperiled.
    • Protect endangered and threatened species and their habitats.
    • Restore the health of vulnerable species and their habitats.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Soil and Food
Which farming or soil practice did you find most inspiring, and why? How could these approaches help farmers and communities adapt to future challenges?

Regenerative Agriculture - actively restore soil health, shifts the focus from simply reducing harm (sustainability) to actively improving the ecosystem.

    • Resilience to Extreme Weather (Drought/Flood): Regenerative soils act like sponges. High organic matter improves water retention by up to 20 times its weight in water, helping crops survive drought and reducing flooding damage during heavy rains.
    • Reduced Input Costs & Increased Profitability: By eliminating synthetic fertilizers and pesticides (which can represent 15-25% of costs for farmers), regenerative systems are often more profitable and less dependent on rising fossil fuel prices.
    • Carbon Sequestration: Regenerative practices can turn farms into net carbon sinks, with agroforestry having the potential to sequester significant amounts of carbon annually.
    • Biodiversity & Natural Pest Management: By fostering beneficial insects and soil microbes, farmers reduce the need for chemicals, lowering the risk of chemical-resistant pests.
    • Enhanced Livelihoods & Food Security:

i had planted a few pine saplings here and there along my clean up walks. Unfortunately the city mowed a few of them over even though they were in "protected area". So i will be grabbing some more to try again
