Take the Pre-Survey

Take the Pre-Event Survey

I’ll take a short pre-survey to share what motivated me to join — and earn 15 points! (If I already took the survey by email, I’ll just mark this action complete to get my points.)

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Biodiversity and Wildlife

Reduce Light Pollution

Too much artificial light can confuse and harm animals, especially those active at night. I will reduce sources of outdoor light or switch to wildlife-friendly fixtures to support healthy habitats.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Personal

Exercise Daily

Daily movement supports our physical and mental health. I will spend 20 minutes each day exercising in a way that feels good to me, such as walking, running, stretching, or dancing.

COMPLETED 12
DAILY ACTIONS

What is resilience?

Share a Resilience Story

Stories connect and inspire us. I will share 1 resilience stories—either from my life, my community, or from a leader or culture I admire—through conversations, social media, or the event feed to help others see resilience in action.

UNCOMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Work and Organizations

Host a Low or No-Waste Lunch or Gathering

Sharing meals builds connection and resilience. I will organize 1 low or no-waste lunches, coffee breaks, or informal gatherings with colleagues, classmates, or volunteers to build stronger relationships and reduce waste.

    What is resilience?
What story did you share, and how did it feel to share it? Did telling or hearing resilience stories shift how you think about strength and adaptability?

here's one of my favorite ways to save energy: participate in the sharing economy!

below is a picture of me returning a book at my local public library

how do libraries reduce energy use? lets count the ways:

    - popular titles routinely get over 50 circulations = 50 less books that had to be manufactured
    - the kinds of titles checked out can also have an impact - use that opportunity to gain knowledge and applicable skills to lead a greener life
    - sharing economies also can greatly reduce our household physical and energy use footprint. Think about all the space we devote in our homes to things we use once a month, once a year, or once in a lifetime. That is just an appalling waste when you think about it! Every extra square foot of stuff is another square foot we have to pay for heating, cooling, lighting, storage materials, etc. A sharing shed in an HOA, for example, could hold lawn equipment, kid's bikes (outgrown every couple years), kids' clothes, large toys, etc.

who else has thoughts on the sharing economy?

here's one way that we are reducing waste in our healthcare facility

in our office breakroom, we use sponges made of vegetable cellulose as opposed to the typical plastic

the sponges (taking the manufacturer at their word here) can be composted in home compost piles

one less source of microplastics shed into our water and soil

yay for health. yay for circular economy. yay for everyone.

reduce energy use today by...learning about renewable energy in your area!

This is a wind turbine south of Salamonia, Indiana.

One of fifty-seven GE Vernova 2.1 megawatt turbines in the Bluff Point Wind Farm.

This project generates enough electricity to power 37,500 households every year - that is more than the number of households in the county.

Air pollution from burning fossil fuels for energy kills millions of people every year.

Let's learn about renewable energy so we can support its deployment in our towns and countries.

challenge today: take the long way around today!

    - extra steps - good for the body
    - extra daylight - good for the mindset
    - extra view of your environment - good for increasing your connection to your local environment

And bonus if you can find ways that encourage taking stairs, avoiding automatic doors, which avoids the energy use of elevators and door motors while increasing opportunities for micro-exercise that keep us fit for the long term.

Go ahead. Treat yourself. Take the long way around today.

Happy Earth Month Ecochallenge everyone! Especially all my colleagues within IU Health and the IU School of Medicine!

I want to kick off the Ecochallenge by reflecting on a helpful saying shared with me by Executive Director of Sustainability for IU Health, Mary Statz:

“Don’t let perfect be the enemy of the good.”

I found a great example of this saying on my sink ledge.

There are two soap choices here.

On the left, you have a soap made with a lot of synthetic ingredients packaged in a theoretically refillable, but–let’s be real–most likely single-use plastic pump bottle.

On the right, you have a soap made with plant-based ingredients which was sold only with a compostable paper wrapper for branding and gets stored on a natural stone dish.

As we think this month about integrating more sustainable processes in our homes and workplaces, I invite us all to consider situations where we can simply introduce a more sustainable option alongside the business-as-usual product.

Let’s not forget that change is hard, and it takes time for perspectives to shift. Making sweeping changes all at once can be counter-productive. Making small, incremental changes over time is often a better strategy for managing change if our goal is true progress.

Let’s all give ourselves some grace this Earth Month. Let’s not let perfect be the enemy of the good. The merely good may just turn out to be our best friend.
