Learn to Choose Forest-Friendly Foods

Our food choices can help protect forests and wildlife. I will spend 60 minutes learning how to choose foods that are grown in ways that protect forests, such as avoiding products linked to deforestation and seeking certified sustainable options like shade-grown coffee or palm oil-free products.

DAILY ACTIONS

Land, Water, and Air

Choose Eco-Friendly Wood and Paper Products

Trees provide food and habitat for local wildlife species, shade our streets and homes, and help keep our air and water clean by capturing pollutants. I will learn about certification labels and buy wood and paper products certified as sustainable or recycled to protect forests and reduce environmental harm.

Reduce Food Waste

Wasting food also wastes water, energy, and resources. I will keep a daily log of food I throw away during the Ecochallenge, either because it went bad before I ate it, I put too much on my plate, or it was scraps from food preparation, and commit to reducing my food waste throughout the challenge.

Participant Feed

Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.

To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Wildlife
How did your experience go in trying an action to Leave No Trace? Did you notice others doing the same, or not? From a perspective of having empathy for others, why might people not adhere to the Leave No Trace principles?

Hiking in Sedona on the weekend and it was encouraging to see no litter on the trails whatsoever! Everyone respected the signs and didn't go off trail or leave their belongings. Really wonderful.

  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Land, Water, and Air
An average American throws out about 240 lbs of food per year. The average family of four spends $1,500 a year on food that they throw out. Where would you rather use this money? What patterns did you notice in the food you threw away, and how can you address them?

I've almost eliminated all waste cooking meals by not peeling potatoes, using the stems of broccoli, always cooking the right amount or eating the next day as leftovers. However, I noticed in this exercise that I still throw away a lot of condiments, sauces, preserves, etc. I buy a large container for one specific use and it then sits in the fridge until moldy and gets tossed.

I learned that searching for rainforest alliance coffee can make a strong impact, and searching labels for all the identifiers of palm oil ingredients and choosing alternatives that don't use palm oil is another great way to reduce deforestation and save the orangutans!
