Stephanie's actions

Climate + Air

Consume only Needs vs Wants

The more stuff we consume, the more greenhouse gasses we put into the atmosphere. I will adopt a "Needs Vs. Wants" approach this month and only buy things I need.

COMPLETED 30
DAILY ACTIONS

Action Track: Community

Borrow Before I Buy

Why buy something I will only use once or a few times if someone nearby has it for me to borrow, and why not share something I have that someone may only need a few times a year? To reduce my consumption and waste, I will create or support the sharing economy with friends, family, colleagues or neighbors.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Action Track: Community

Keep My Community Clean

At times it may not feel like it's up to us to keep our community clean and healthy, but we all have a role to play. Each day I am outside, I will pick up any litter I see.

COMPLETED 12
DAILY ACTIONS

Climate + Air

Stay on the Ground

Carbon emissions from air travel is harmful to planetary and human health. Instead of traveling by plane, I will find an alternative way to accomplish the goals of an upcoming trip (i.e. telepresence, vacation locally).

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Land + Forests

30 for 30 in Nature

Studies have shown that when we spend consistent time in nature, our health improves, our creativity increases, and our connection to the planet gets stronger. Each day of the Ecochallenge, I will spend 30 minutes outside (in a large or small patch of nature), then share my observations, reflections, and learnings on the feed.

COMPLETED 20
DAILY ACTIONS

Climate + Air

Use Muscle Power

I will cut my car trip mileage by only taking necessary trips, and I will only use muscle-powered transportation for all other trips.

COMPLETED 8
DAILY ACTIONS

Participant Feed

Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.

To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Action Track: Community Borrow Before I Buy
How did you participate in the sharing economy? (Consider posting a photo!) What are the benefits of a sharing economy? How could a sharing economy change the dynamics you have with friends, family and/or neighbors?

This month so far I've shared my tools and step stool with my family and friends. They've avoided spending money on items they will only use a couple times and I was more than happy to assist.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Climate + Air Consume only Needs vs Wants
Consuming only what we need vs. what we want can be really hard to do. What has been challenging about committing to this action for a month? What have you learned about yourself? Will you change any habits going forward?

The hardest part about committing to this challenge is not spending money on house decorations. I don't need them as I have enough decorations but it's very hard to walk away from cute items.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Land + Forests 30 for 30 in Nature
What have you noticed about how it feels to spend consistent time outside?

I've noticed I look forward to spending time outside because it's an opportunity to step away from work and take a breather. I come back feeling refreshed and refocused.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Climate + Air Use Muscle Power
How do your transportation choices affect your engagement in your community? Does your experience or enjoyment differ while walking, riding transit, biking or driving?

By walking more in my community it gives me an opportunity to appreciate things I don't necessarily notice while driving. For example, there's artwork sculptures I pass by during my walk that I didn't appreciate as much just driving by.

Enjoyed my walk today. The breeze made it more tolerable with the higher temp today.

It's cold here today in NorCal (almost 20 degree difference from yesterday!). I'm glad I enjoyed the warm sunny weather while it lasted. Glad you enjoyed your walk :)
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Action Track: Community Keep My Community Clean
How does the act of picking up litter connect you more to your community?

The act of picking up litter connects me to my community because I'm helping to keep it beautiful and clean. Hopefully it will also encourage my neighbors to do the same so we can keep our neighborhood beautiful.
