Kat's actions
Action Track: Community
Plant Trees
Trees capture carbon and produce oxygen that is essential to life on earth. I will support this important piece of nature by organizing or joining a community group to plant 1 native trees in my community, public parks, office location, campus or backyard.
Freshwater + Oceans
Learn About Water Justice in My Area
I will spend at least 2 minutes a day using the resources provided to learn about water justice and find out how I can get involved in local initiatives.
Action Track: Community
Sustainability Lunch and Learn
Learning in a social setting can inspire connection and change. I will work with a friend or colleague to plan and host a lunch and learn at work, school, in my neighborhood or other location to learn more about an environmental topic important to me. After the lunch and learn, I will share more about it on the feed.
Action Track: Community
Share My "Why"
I will record a video to share why I am taking action this Earth Month, a sustainable swap I've made, and/or a local conservation effort in my area.
Freshwater + Oceans
Understand My Water Footprint
Each of us has a water footprint, directly linked to our daily activities as well as the water required in the production of things we use each day. Understanding our water use is important for a healthy planet. I will calculate my water footprint and look for a few ways I can reduce consumption or waste, then share what I learned on the feed.
Freshwater + Oceans
Raise Awareness for the Conservation of Freshwater and Oceans
I will spend 30 minutes learning more about the importance of freshwater + ocean conservation, and how I can reduce my water use. I will share what I learn with people in person, on social media, and on the feed.
Land + Forests
Regenerative Agriculture and Me
Regenerative agriculture focuses on farming and ranching in a way that supports life and restores the soil. I will spend 20 minutes learning about regenerative agriculture and find out if any nearby farms practice regenerative agriculture.
Biodiversity + Wildlife
Beauty and Personal Products
Beauty and personal products can create a lot of waste. I will spend 30 minutes learning about the beauty and body products I use to see if they are refillable or recyclable. If not, I will reach out to the manufacturer to advocate for those options.
Climate + Air
Online Energy Audit
Energy use and waste is often invisible. I will complete an online energy audit of my home, office, or dorm room and identify my next steps for saving energy.
Land + Forests
Carry My Trash
I will carry all of my unrecyclable, non-compostable trash with me this month, to raise my awareness of how much I send to the landfill. I will post on the feed my reflections, conversations, and actions I will take moving forward.
Land + Forests
Zero Waste Day
The impacts of our waste are far reaching. I will create zero waste for an entire day and share my reflections and learnings on the feed.
Land + Forests
Personal Waste Audit
The waste we create daily can go unnoticed. I will track the waste I create in a day and post a photo log on the feed to see how much I create and where I can make different choices to reduce my waste going forward.
Land + Forests
Advocate for Forest Protection
Using my voice can help create a more sustainable and just world. I will contact 3 local, regional, or national decision makers to advocate for public policy that protects forests and improves their ability to sequester carbon and nourish biodiversity.
Climate + Air
Calculate My Carbon Impact
Carbon emissions can show up in many surprising ways in our life. I will calculate the carbon emissions associated with my household and consider how lifestyle changes could reduce the carbon footprint and impacts on the environment.
Land + Forests
30 for 30 in Nature
Studies have shown that when we spend consistent time in nature, our health improves, our creativity increases, and our connection to the planet gets stronger. Each day of the Ecochallenge, I will spend 30 minutes outside (in a large or small patch of nature), then share my observations, reflections, and learnings on the feed.
Land + Forests
Explore My Area
When we explore natural spaces around us, our connections with them change. I will spend 60 minutes exploring a new area around my neighborhood, office, or campus (e.g., park, water body, nearby trail, community garden, green space, etc.).
Biodiversity + Wildlife
Invest in Nature
A healthy world needs both our daily actions and support from larger systems. I will spend 30 minutes learning about how I can use my investments and savings to advance environmental sustainability.
Biodiversity + Wildlife
Learn about Native Species
The world is full of unique species. I will spend 2 minutes each day learning what the native plants and wildlife are in my region.
Climate + Air
Consume only Needs vs Wants
The more stuff we consume, the more greenhouse gasses we put into the atmosphere. I will adopt a "Needs Vs. Wants" approach this month and only buy things I need.
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.
To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

Why am I sharing so incessantly about Earth Month and the Conservation EcoChallenge? Perhaps a more pertinent question is: “What’s stopping You from taking action?”
These scenes offer thousands more perfect words than I could conceive of for a caption or voiceover. Conserving our world begets stability and ensures a future for our descendants, from smallest to large, from mountains to prairies and ocean. Why wouldn’t we want to leave them a world more beautiful, pristine, and simply Better than we found it? Taking collective action for People and Planet is a better gift than any iPhone or dollar bill can temporarily offer.
Please consider joining me this Earth Month in leaving a legacy we can be proud of. Sign up at the link in my bio (in comments on Facebook). Come to me with Any questions! I would love to chat and connect with you on this topic.

Kat Geertsen 4/02/2024 4:19 PMIt is hard to get outside for a decent walk on a travel day let alone when it’s cold as hell and raining -
Kat Geertsen 4/02/2024 3:33 PMI am traveling today and didn’t NEED to buy a chocolate shake in a single-use plastic cup before boarding, but I did. And I forgot my straw. 🤦🏻♀️ It didn’t even come with whipped cream! 😫
We’ll try again tomorrow! -
Kat Geertsen 4/01/2024 9:59 PMReading the suggested article:
"According to the 2030 Water Resources Group, the world would face a 40% global water deficit by 2030 under a business-as-usual scenario."
A deficit. My teachers in K-12 education told us that wars are fought over resources and the next world war would be over water. Hopefully humans figure out a way to avoid that. Excited to learn about solutions! -
Kat Geertsen 4/01/2024 8:19 PMTrying to be grateful for the rain we are getting, but it is still cold and so grey . . . it's been fun to watch the buds on the trees along my route grow a little bit each day! -
Kat Geertsen 4/01/2024 8:18 PMI travel a lot and don't plan to carry my trash with me for a month. Considering a daily photo and creating a collage at the end of the month. This is gonna be enlightening.-
Jeanne Poirier 4/01/2024 8:25 PMGreat idea and look forward to the collage Kat!!

Kat Geertsen 4/01/2024 8:13 PMOut for a walk in my neighborhood and I see these everywhere. I assumed they're the state flower of Wisconsin, the wood violet, but they are Siberian squill, native to southwestern Russia, the Caucasus, and Turkey, not, in fact, Siberia. Using the iNaturalist app for this daily task on my daily 30 for 30 walk!
