COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Land, Water, and Air

Reduce Food Waste

Wasting food also wastes water, energy, and resources. I will keep a daily log of food I throw away during the Ecochallenge, either because it went bad before I ate it, I put too much on my plate, or it was scraps from food preparation, and commit to reducing my food waste throughout the challenge.

COMPLETED 30
DAILY ACTIONS

Community and Connection

Check In with a Friend or Colleague

Staying connected strengthens relationships and boosts well-being. Each day, I will reach out to 2 friends or colleagues to check in, have a meaningful conversation, or offer support.

COMPLETED 4
DAILY ACTIONS

Wildlife

Use Reusable Bags

Plastic bags do not always end up in landfills and if they aren't properly disposed of. In nature, they can be mistaken for food by many wild animals and harm wildlife. When I go shopping, I will be sure to bring my own bags to reduce waste and the chance that plastic bags could find their way into wildlife habitats.

COMPLETED 23
DAILY ACTIONS

Land, Water, and Air

Take Shorter Showers

Conserving water helps protect this precious resource. I will shorten my showers to 5 minutes to save water and reduce energy use - each time saving up to 20 gallons (75 L) of water!

COMPLETED 30
DAILY ACTIONS

What impressed me most about the youth-led project I supported was the incredible passion and creativity the young people brought to it. They were so engaged and driven, coming up with innovative solutions and working together with a sense of purpose. It was clear they didn’t just want to make an impact—they believed they could.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Land, Water, and Air
Where in your life do you emit the most carbon? What change are you willing to make in your daily life to reduce this output?

    • 17-DAY STREAK
The area where many people emit the most carbon is typically related to transportation, especially if you drive frequently or have a long commute. For others, it could be energy use in the home, such as heating and cooling, or food choices, particularly if a lot of meat and processed foods are consumed.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Health and Well-Being
What motivated you to schedule or attend your check-up, and how did it make you feel afterward that you completed this action?

Preparing for extreme weather events means being proactive, not panicked. Here's what I (or someone might) do to get ready:
Create an emergency kit – including water, non-perishable food, flashlight, batteries, first aid supplies, medications, and copies of important documents.
Sign up for local alerts – through weather apps or community notification systems to stay informed in real time.
Make a family communication plan – so everyone knows where to meet or how to reconnect if separated.
Secure the home – like clearing gutters, trimming trees, and knowing how to shut off utilities if needed.
Know your risks – whether it’s floods, wildfires, hurricanes, or heatwaves, understanding local threats helps you prepare smartly.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Land, Water, and Air
What was the most unexpected piece of trash that was picked up during your local cleanup effort? How does working with others to clean up your community make you feel?

One of the most unexpected pieces of trash often found during local cleanups is something completely out of place — like a toilet seat, a shopping cart, or even a traffic cone in a park or riverbank. These surprises make you realize just how far discarded items can travel and how disconnected some waste is from where it ends up
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Wildlife
How did it feel to plant something, and what kind of gardening did you do (indoors, hydroponic, outside in a garden, etc)? What did you plant and where? Feel free to share a photo to the feed!

Planting something — whether a tiny seed or a young sapling — can feel surprisingly powerful. It’s an act of hope, patience, and care, knowing that something small will grow with the right attention. There’s a sense of connection to the earth and a reminder that growth takes time.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Wildlife
Are you a gardener or house plant lover? Why or why not? What do you need to elevate your plant care skills?

    • 17-DAY STREAK
here’s something grounding about watching a plant grow — it teaches patience, observation, and care. But I know there’s always room to grow my green thumb. To elevate my plant care skills, I think I need to:
    • Better understand light levels in my space ☀️
    • Learn how to recognize early signs of pests or diseases 🐛
    • Get more confident with repotting and pruning
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Wildlife
What did you learn about how tourism impacts wildlife, and how can you make more conscious choices when planning a trip? How do you think your travel decisions can contribute to wildlife conservation and respectful interactions with nature?

Learning about how tourism impacts wildlife revealed that even well-meaning travel can have unintended consequences. Things like habitat disruption, feeding or touching animals, noise pollution, and litter can stress wildlife or alter their natural behaviors. Overcrowding in sensitive areas can also degrade ecosystems and make it harder for species to thrive.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Empowering the Next Generation
What did you and the young person learn from conducting the audit together, and how did it change their understanding of sustainability? Did anything change about your understanding of sustainability?

Conducting the audit together was a powerful learning experience for both of us. For the young person, it transformed sustainability from an abstract idea into something visible and actionable. By examining energy use, waste habits, or resource consumption firsthand, they were able to see the direct impact of daily choices — like how much paper gets wasted, how lights left on affect energy bills, or how single-use plastics add up. It shifted their perspective from “sustainability is important” to “I can do something about it right here and now.”
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Empowering the Next Generation
How did participating in a bio-blitz with young people enhance their understanding of local biodiversity? What impact do you think activities like a bio-blitz have on inspiring youth to protect nature?

Participating in a bio-blitz with young people can significantly enhance their understanding of local biodiversity by offering a hands-on, immersive experience. Rather than learning from textbooks or lectures, youth get to actively observe, identify, and record real plants, animals, and insects in their own environment. This direct interaction makes the concept of biodiversity tangible and relatable. They see the variety of life forms right in their own communities, often discovering species they never noticed before. It fosters curiosity, observation skills, and scientific thinking.
