Akash's actions
Soil and Food
Learn How to Save Pollinators
Bees and other pollinators are vital to ecosystems and agriculture. I will spend 20 minutes learning how to support local pollinators and take at least one action—such as planting native flowers or avoiding pesticides—to help sustain resilient ecosystems and harvests.
Share My Why
Share My Why
I will share my Ecochallenge story and why I'm taking action for the planet — and earn 15 points!
What is resilience?
Learn About Community Resilience
Communities can adapt to challenges and grow stronger together. I will spend 4 minutes learning about how communities prepare for and respond to change, and how collective action builds resilience.
Water
Collect Rain Water
Rainwater collection reduces water waste and supports local needs. I will install a rain barrel or collect rainwater to use for outdoor tasks, such as watering plants or cleaning.
Water
Create My Own Water Action
Everyone’s water needs and use are different. I will create an action that works for my life and supports water resilience—and make my commitment public by sharing it in the feed to inspire others.
What is resilience?
Share a Definition of Resilience
Sharing builds common understanding. I will share 4 definitions of resilience that resonate with me—through conversations, social media, or the event feed—to help others explore what resilience means.
Personal
Go Get a Check Up
Regular health check-ups help prevent problems before they start. I will schedule or attend a medical, dental, or mental health check-up to take care of my well-being.
Biodiversity and Wildlife
Leave the Leaves
Fallen leaves, logs, and brush provide shelter and food for wildlife. I will leave natural features in my yard or community space to help strengthen biodiversity and soil resilience.
What is resilience?
Learn About Ordinary Magic
Resilience is an everyday magic in all of us. I will spend 4 minutes learning about resilience and psychologist Ann Masten’s concept of “ordinary magic,” which shows how people adapt and thrive through small, daily strengths.
Community
Offer a Skill or Service
Sharing our talents can benefit those around us. I will offer my skills or services that contribute to local self-sufficiency, such as teaching a repair skill or helping with a neighbor's garden.
What is resilience?
Share a Resilience Story
Stories connect and inspire us. I will share 4 resilience stories—either from my life, my community, or from a leader or culture I admire—through conversations, social media, or the event feed to help others see resilience in action.
Soil and Food
Grow Something to Eat
Growing food builds resilience by connecting us to the soil and reducing reliance on long supply chains. I will grow edible plants—such as herbs, vegetables, or grains—in my home, balcony, or community space, strengthening both my food security and local biodiversity.
Biodiversity and Wildlife
Choose Native Plants
Native plants provide food and shelter for local wildlife and help ecosystems adapt to change. I will choose native plants for my yard, balcony, or community space instead of non-native or ornamental species to support biodiversity resilience.
Biodiversity and Wildlife
Donate to Support Wildlife
There are many amazing projects supporting wildlife and their habitats. I will choose a project or organization to support that helps species and habitats I care about and make a donation.
What is resilience?
Learn About Ecological Resilience
Resilience is part of how nature works. I will spend 4 minutes learning about ecological resilience—how ecosystems adapt to disturbances and renew themselves through cycles of growth and renewal.
Personal
Prepare for Extreme Weather
Extreme weather events like hurricanes, wildfires, and floods can disrupt lives and upend our communities. I will take proactive steps to prepare for extreme weather by safeguarding my home and creating or updating an emergency plan and kit with essential supplies, evacuation routes, and contact information.
Biodiversity and Wildlife
Reduce Light Pollution
Too much artificial light can confuse and harm animals, especially those active at night. I will reduce sources of outdoor light or switch to wildlife-friendly fixtures to support healthy habitats.
Work and Organizations
Map Local Risks and Resources
Preparedness is part of resilience. I will spend 10 minutes with colleagues identifying potential risks (such as weather, supply chain, or staffing issues) and the resources or strategies available to address them.
Community
Swap and Share with Others
Swapping and sharing resources reduces waste and builds community bonds. I will participate in 5 swaps or sharing activities, like borrowing items, attending or hosting a swap meet, or giving away items I no longer need to support a sharing economy with friends, family, colleagues or neighbors.
Work and Organizations
Join or Start a Green Team
Green teams strengthen resilience by creating shared responsibility. I will join or help start a green team in my workplace, school, or community group to support sustainability and collaboration.
Community
Join a Group
Belonging to a group can help build friendships and a sense of purpose. I will explore online or in-person groups or clubs that share my interests or goals and join a group to connect with others.
Community
Host a Gathering
Bringing people together helps strengthen bonds. I will organize and host a gathering, such as a potluck, coffee meet up, or shared meal, for friends, family, colleagues, or neighbors to foster connection and community spirit.
Share My Why
Take the Earth Month Ecochallenge Feedback Survey
I will take a short survey about my experience to help the Ecochallenge team improve future events, earn a chance to win a prize, and earn 15 points!
Personal
Meditate
Meditation helps build resilience and clarity. I will spend 30 minutes each day to meditate or create a moment of silence each day to reflect on things important to me.
Personal
Enjoy Fruits and Veggies
Eating a wide variety of colorful fruits and vegetables is a simple way to boost our personal health and support a more resilient food system. I will prepare and enjoy 6 servings of fruits and vegetables each day.

The planet doesn’t need a few people doing sustainability perfectly—it needs many people doing it imperfectly, but persistently.Small steps, real impact. -

Another big change has been around energy and resource use at home. I’ve become much more mindful about switching off lights, unplugging idle electronics, and using appliances more efficiently. I even tried a few “no-power hours” in the evenings—reading, stretching, or just sitting quietly instead of defaulting to screens. Those moments turned out to be surprisingly restorative.Food choices have also been a major part of the challenge. I experimented with more plant-forward meals, reducing meat consumption a few days a week. Not only did I discover new recipes, but it also made me appreciate where my food comes from and the environmental cost behind it. Supporting local produce whenever possible felt like a small but meaningful win. -

I’m a few weeks into the Earth Eco Challenge, and it’s honestly been a grounding, eye-opening experience. What started as a simple commitment to “do better for the planet” has slowly reshaped how I think about everyday choices—especially the small ones I used to ignore. One of my main focus areas has been reducing waste. I began tracking how much single-use plastic I was consuming, and the results were a little uncomfortable. From food packaging to impulse buys, it was everywhere. Since then, I’ve switched to carrying a reusable water bottle and cloth bag, chosen loose produce whenever possible, and made a conscious effort to say no to unnecessary packaging. It hasn’t been perfect, but awareness alone has led to real improvement.
