John's actions

Soil and Food

Learn How to Save Pollinators

Bees and other pollinators are vital to ecosystems and agriculture. I will spend 15 minutes learning how to support local pollinators and take at least one action—such as planting native flowers or avoiding pesticides—to help sustain resilient ecosystems and harvests.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Water

Understand My Water Footprint

Each of us has a water footprint, directly linked to our daily activities as well as the water required in the production of things we use each day. Understanding our water use is important for a healthy planet. I will calculate my water footprint and look for a few ways I can reduce consumption or waste, then share what I learned on the feed.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Water

Save Water When Washing Dishes

Dishwashers can save water — if used wisely. I will only run the dishwasher when it’s full and skip the pre-rinse to reduce water and energy use. If I don't have a dishwasher, I will turn off the tap as often as possible while washing dishes.

COMPLETED 9
DAILY ACTIONS

Water

Create My Own Water Action

Everyone’s water needs and use are different. I will create an action that works for my life and supports water resilience—and make my commitment public by sharing it in the feed to inspire others.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Community

Express Gratitude and Random Acts of Kindness

Small acts of kindness and gratitude can brighten someone's day and create a positive ripple effect. I will express gratitude to 3 people or perform 3 random acts of kindness to spread joy and connection.

COMPLETED 8
DAILY ACTIONS

Community

Host a Gathering

Bringing people together helps strengthen bonds. I will organize and host a gathering, such as a potluck, coffee meet up, or shared meal, for friends, family, colleagues, or neighbors to foster connection and community spirit.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Soil and Food

Preserve or Store Food

Preserving food through freezing, drying, or fermenting helps food last longer, reduces waste, and ensures supplies during difficult times. I will preserve or store food during the challenge to strengthen household and community resilience.

COMPLETED 8
DAILY ACTIONS

Community

Offer a Skill or Service

Sharing our talents can benefit those around us. I will offer my skills or services that contribute to local self-sufficiency, such as teaching a repair skill or helping with a neighbor's garden.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Soil and Food

Compost My Food Waste

Composting turns waste into a resource, building soil health and cutting methane emissions from landfills. I will compost food scraps at home, school, or in my community, which avoids sending up to 0.42 lbs (0.19 kg) of food waste to the landfill per day.

COMPLETED 4
DAILY ACTIONS

Action Track

Host a Cleanup Event with Colleagues

Shared projects at work strengthen teams and build organizational resilience. I will host or join 1 cleanup events with colleagues, classmates, or group members to improve our environment and strengthen collaboration.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Take the Pre-Survey

Take the Pre-Event Survey

I’ll take a short pre-survey to share what motivated me to join — and earn 15 points! (If I already took the survey by email, I’ll just mark this action complete to get my points.)

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Biodiversity and Wildlife

Contribute to Community Science

Wildlife observations can help researchers and communities understand and protect biodiversity. I will download a wildlife monitoring app and log 1 animal or plant species I discover.

Mindfulness is the basic human ability to be fully present, aware of where we are and what we are doing, without becoming overly reactive or overwhelmed by what is happening around us. It involves paying attention to your thoughts, feelings, bodily sensations, and
in the here and now with an attitude of openness, curiosity, and non-judgment.

There are places in this world so beautiful we are a lucky species that can travel and enjoy the earth.

Earth Day the world’s largest secular movement, involving over one billion people across 193 countries. It serves as a global call to action for environmental protection, urging individuals and governments to address critical issues like pollution, climate change, and biodiversity. Highlights how community innovation can endure even during shifts in national or global policies.

Somewhat sad the "earth month" has to end formally, but everyone should observe continually everyday until next year. when we can "rinse and repeat."

That's exactly how I felt with Earth Day! My roommate was telling me she will compost on Earth Day, but I was telling her that Earth Day is not the only day we should practice environmental stewardship; it is merely a day to recognize something we should do year-round.

My wife was taking stuff outside to our car and a common grackle (Quiscalus quiscula) flew into our house. He was nervous and agitated, Amazingly I was able to get my hands on the bird and released it outdoors. (who named the bird a "common" grackle, seems rude I found him majestic so I've renamed the North American majestic grackle), a
    happy ending for all.

Earth Day today, I am a senior citizen and when I was in college in the 70's my Biology professor Dr Beard wrote the word "ecology" on the chalkboard. He said you are going to hear a lot about this in the future. Back then people didn't even know the word, we've come a long way. YEA!

This is one of my small habits that actually lowers my cost of living in a meaningful way. My coffee at home works out to about 22 cents per cup using reusable K-cups, while a regular Starbucks brewed coffee is around $2.80, so making it myself is roughly 12 times cheaper. Even with pods, the K-cups are about $1.10-$1.50 per cup based on local pricing, so still cheaper than buying out but nowhere near as cheap as brewing it yourself. I drink three a day in an insulated mug, which costs me about 66 cents total vs $8.40 if I were buying them, and that difference adds up to around $2,800 a year. Same beans, same caffeine, just a simple habit that keeps money in my pocket. The grounds then get composted for the vegetable garden.

That's amazing! It is crazy how much coffee costs to buy versus how much it costs to make it at home with reusable pods. I like that you also compared using premade k-cup pods, which is still so much cheaper than buying a cup of coffee but not as sustainable as reusable pods. Thank you for sharing and doing the math!
