Land, Water, and Air

Produce No Waste for a Day

The impacts of our waste are far reaching. I will create zero waste for an entire day and share my reflections and learnings on the feed.

COMPLETED 1
DAILY ACTION

Land, Water, and Air

Learn to Choose Forest-Friendly Foods

Our food choices can help protect forests and wildlife. I will spend 10 minutes learning how to choose foods that are grown in ways that protect forests, such as avoiding products linked to deforestation and seeking certified sustainable options like shade-grown coffee or palm oil-free products.

COMPLETED 1
DAILY ACTION

Land, Water, and Air

Save Water When Washing Dishes

Dishwashers can save water — if used wisely. I will only run the dishwasher when it’s full and skip the pre-rinse to reduce water and energy use. If I don't have a dishwasher, I will turn off the tap as often as possible while washing dishes.

COMPLETED 1
DAILY ACTION

Land, Water, and Air

Choose Eco-Friendly Wood and Paper Products

Trees provide food and habitat for local wildlife species, shade our streets and homes, and help keep our air and water clean by capturing pollutants. I will learn about certification labels and buy wood and paper products certified as sustainable or recycled to protect forests and reduce environmental harm.

Participant Feed

Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.

To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

How did changing your dishwashing habits make you more mindful of water use? What other small changes can you make to conserve water in your household?

Here are some other small changes we can make to conserve water in our household:

    1. Fix Leaks: Regularly check for and repair any leaks in faucets, pipes, and toilets. Even small leaks can waste a lot of water over time.
    2. Install Water-Saving Fixtures: Use low-flow showerheads, faucets, and toilets to reduce water consumption without sacrificing performance.
    3. Shorten Showers: Reducing the time spent in the shower can save a significant amount of water. Aim for showers that are 5 minutes or less.
    4. Turn Off the Tap: When brushing your teeth or washing your hands, turn off the tap while you're not actively using the water.
    5. Use a Broom: Instead of hosing down driveways or sidewalks, use a broom to clean them.
    6. Water Plants Wisely: Water your garden during the early morning or late evening to minimize evaporation. Use a watering can instead of a hose for more controlled watering.
    7. Collect Rainwater: Set up a rain barrel to collect rainwater for watering plants and gardens.
Making these small changes can collectively make a big difference in conserving water and promoting a more sustainable lifestyle. 🌱💧

Today I read a very good quote: by Robert Swan- "The greatest threat to our planet is the belief that someone else will save it."
  • REFLECTION QUESTION

What did you learn about forest-friendly foods? What sustainable food choices will you commit to making, and why are they important to you?

    Forest-Friendly Foods
Forest-friendly foods are those that are sourced in ways that protect and sustain forest ecosystems. These foods often include wild fruits, nuts, mushrooms, and other plants that grow naturally in forests, as well as sustainably harvested products like honey and certain types of fish and game

    1. Consuming these foods helps support biodiversity and the health of forest environments.
    Sustainable Food Choices
Here are some sustainable food choices you might consider committing to:

    1. Plant-Based Proteins: Lentils, beans, and other legumes are excellent sources of protein that have a much lower environmental impact compared to meat
    2. 2. They require less water and land to produce and help improve soil health.
    3. Locally Sourced Foods: Buying locally reduces the carbon footprint associated with transporting food over long distances. It also supports local farmers and economies
    4. 3.
    5. Seasonal Produce: Eating fruits and vegetables that are in season in your area reduces the need for energy-intensive greenhouse production and long-distance shipping
    6. 3.
    7. Organic and Regenerative Agriculture: Choosing foods produced through organic or regenerative farming practices helps maintain soil health, reduce chemical use, and promote biodiversity
    8. 3.
    9. Minimally Processed Foods: Foods that are less processed typically require fewer resources to produce and generate less waste
    10. 3.
    Why These Choices Matter
Committing to sustainable food choices is important because it helps reduce your environmental footprint, supports sustainable farming practices, and promotes the health of ecosystems. These choices can also lead to a healthier diet and a stronger connection to your local community and environment.

What sustainable food choices are you considering, and what motivates you to make these changes?

What was hard about having a Zero Waste Day? What did you learn about yourself and your habits?

Having a Zero Waste Day can be quite challenging, but it's also a great learning experience. Here are some common difficulties people face and what they might learn about themselves:

    Challenges:
    1. Awareness of Waste: Realizing how much waste is generated in daily activities can be eye-opening. It can be hard to avoid single-use plastics and packaging.
    2. Convenience vs. Sustainability: Many convenient options, like takeout food or pre-packaged snacks, often come with a lot of waste. Choosing sustainable alternatives can require more effort and planning.
    3. Limited Options: Depending on where you live, finding zero-waste alternatives can be difficult. Not all stores offer bulk buying or package-free options.
    4. Habits and Routines: Breaking old habits and establishing new, sustainable ones can be tough. It requires mindfulness and consistency.
    Learnings:
    1. Mindfulness: You become more aware of your consumption patterns and the impact of your choices. This mindfulness can extend to other areas of life.
    2. Creativity: Finding zero-waste solutions often requires creativity, like making your own cleaning products or finding reusable alternatives.
    3. Values Alignment: You might discover that living sustainably aligns closely with your values, leading to a greater sense of purpose and satisfaction.
    4. Community and Support: Engaging in zero-waste practices can connect you with like-minded individuals and communities, providing support and inspiration.
What specific challenges or insights did you encounter during your Zero Waste Day?
