Mary's actions
Biodiversity + Wildlife
Volunteer in my Community
I will volunteer 4 hours in my community.
Biodiversity + Wildlife
Seek Alternative Gifts and Souvenirs
When traveling, I will seek souvenirs that support local communities and do not cause harm to the environment or wildlife.
Land + Forests
Explore My Area
When we explore natural spaces around us, our connections with them change. I will spend 30 minutes exploring a new area around my neighborhood, office, or campus (e.g., park, water body, nearby trail, community garden, green space, etc.).
Freshwater + Oceans
Reduce Pollutants in Cleaning
Understanding cleaning product ingredients and their effect on water and biodiversity is helpful to our consumer choices. I will spend 10 minutes learning about how cleaning products affect our water and try making my own cleaning products to reduce pollutants.
Land + Forests
Personal Waste Audit
The waste we create daily can go unnoticed. I will track the waste I create in a day and post a photo log on the feed to see how much I create and where I can make different choices to reduce my waste going forward.
Land + Forests
Zero Waste Day
The impacts of our waste are far reaching. I will create zero waste for an entire day and share my reflections and learnings on the feed.
Freshwater + Oceans
Use a Reusable Water Bottle
It's estimated over a billion water bottles are thrown away each year. Even if they were recycled, that still uses energy and resources from the earth. I will use a reusable bottle and stop purchasing bottled water, saving 2 disposable plastic bottle(s) a day.
Climate + Air
Weekly Meal Planning
One third of all food produced worldwide is wasted, and so is the energy it takes to produce and transport that food. I will reduce food waste and save money by planning a weekly menu, only buying the ingredients I need and eating what I planned each day.
Climate + Air
Low Carbon Diet
Carbon is emitted into the atmosphere in a variety of ways, including through the foods we eat and food we waste. I will learn about low carbon foods and replace higher carbon foods with them in my diet.
Climate + Air
Use Muscle Power
I will cut my car trip mileage by only taking necessary trips, and I will only use muscle-powered transportation for all other trips.
Action Track: Community
Plant Trees
Trees capture carbon and produce oxygen that is essential to life on earth. I will support this important piece of nature by organizing or joining a community group to plant 1 native trees in my community, public parks, office location, campus or backyard.
Land + Forests
Borrow Before I Buy
Why buy something I will only use once or a few times if someone nearby has it for me to borrow, and why not share something I have that someone may only need a few times a year? To reduce my consumption and waste, I will create or support the sharing economy with friends, family, colleagues or neighbors.
Climate + Air
Calculate My Carbon Impact
Carbon emissions can show up in many surprising ways in our life. I will calculate the carbon emissions associated with my household and consider how lifestyle changes could reduce the carbon footprint and impacts on the environment.
Land + Forests
Compost Food Waste
Food in the landfill is one of the main sources of greenhouse gasses. I will avoid sending up to .69 lbs (.31 kg) of food waste to the landfill per day by composting my food.
Biodiversity + Wildlife
Save the Bees
Bees are vital to ecosystems. To help save the bees, I will learn which local flowers provide nectar and plant them in my backyard or in a pot on my balcony.
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.
To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

Mary Frigo 4/25/2024 10:29 AMI’ve really been enjoying eating less meat, I have been eating a ton of beans and would love to take things one step more eco conscious and buy them in bulk and cook them myself rather than buying them canned.-

REFLECTION QUESTIONBiodiversity + Wildlife Seek Alternative Gifts and SouvenirsHow do your consumption choices affect the health of wildlife and other communities?
Mary Frigo 4/23/2024 8:45 AMI traveled to Laguna Beach and did a LOT of window shopping... I withheld myself and brought home a bag of local organic coffee from the shop I went to each morning. I can now extend my trip by enjoying a hot cup of coffee everyday this week :)-

Mary Frigo 4/21/2024 10:27 AMJust took a trip and was so happy I prepped some things to bring and was able to walk everywhere from our place to keep up with no driving! -
Mary Frigo 4/18/2024 2:19 PMshared with my partner this morning about what I had learned about toxic dog toys! We decided we are going to do some deep diving on our current toy suppliers and make sure they arent using any toxic chemicals and update our purchasing accordingly -
Mary Frigo 4/17/2024 8:52 PMI have started connecting with some people on the office to learn about what they are doing for their Eco challenge month. I have really been inspired to add a couple of tasks to my list like cleaning up trash in my area, going to a volunteer event, and going to a cleanup. Also, although I am not doing the challenge to carry my trash with me the entire month, I have been thinking more throughout the day of how much trash I am creating and how I can create less and it’s really eye-opening. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONLand + Forests Explore My AreaWhere did you go for your walk or hike in nature? What were the benefits of doing so?
Mary Frigo 4/16/2024 4:12 PMI have been bringing my dog into the office and that forced me to rediscover some green spaces in the Pearl. I spent two days with him at Couch Park and it was really nice to walk and then just hang out and enjoy the park with him. I was encouraged to leave the office more and started thinking how I could bring a book with me and just hang out anytime. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFreshwater + Oceans Reduce Pollutants in CleaningWhat did you learn about ingredients in our cleaning products and how they impact water and biodiversity? Did you try making your own cleaning products? If so, how did it go?
Mary Frigo 4/16/2024 3:56 PMThe article that I read primarily focuses on the toxic chemicals found in pet products rather than cleaning products, I have a dog at home and I have thought I was a conscious owner but wow I didn't realize all the hazards. The article did mention the potential hazards of chemicals like phthalates, lead, formaldehyde, and others found in dog toys and bedding. These chemicals can leach into the environment, contaminating water sources and harming biodiversity. To the second part of the question - I have been making my own cleaning products for years and I love it! Between making my own and getting a few at the "refill" shop I haven't had to buy a bottle of cleaning product in 2+ years :) -
Mary Frigo 4/16/2024 6:59 AMYesterday I biked from work! I usually ebike to and from work and yesterday was a great reminder of how joyful it feels to power your way home.-
