Jaime's actions

Land, Water, and Air

Reduce Food Waste

Wasting food also wastes water, energy, and resources. I will keep a daily log of food I throw away during the Ecochallenge, either because it went bad before I ate it, I put too much on my plate, or it was scraps from food preparation, and commit to reducing my food waste throughout the challenge.

COMPLETED 7
DAILY ACTIONS

Land, Water, and Air

Save Water When Washing Dishes

Dishwashers can save water — if used wisely. I will only run the dishwasher when it’s full and skip the pre-rinse to reduce water and energy use. If I don't have a dishwasher, I will turn off the tap as often as possible while washing dishes.

COMPLETED 11
DAILY ACTIONS

Land, Water, and Air

Take Shorter Showers

Conserving water helps protect this precious resource. I will shorten my showers to 5 minutes to save water and reduce energy use - each time saving up to 20 gallons (75 L) of water!

COMPLETED 9
DAILY ACTIONS

Land, Water, and Air

Learn About Water Justice

Access to clean water is a basic right, yet not everyone has it. I will spend 60 minutes learning about water justice issues and who is affected.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Health and Well-Being

Exercise Daily

Daily movement supports our physical and mental health. I will spend 30 minutes each day exercising in a way that feels good to me, such as walking, running, stretching, or dancing.

COMPLETED 14
DAILY ACTIONS

Land, Water, and Air

Learn to Choose Forest-Friendly Foods

Our food choices can help protect forests and wildlife. I will spend 30 minutes learning how to choose foods that are grown in ways that protect forests, such as avoiding products linked to deforestation and seeking certified sustainable options like shade-grown coffee or palm oil-free products.

COMPLETED 5
DAILY ACTIONS

Land, Water, and Air

Conduct a Home Energy Audit

Reducing energy use helps protect the air and climate. I will complete an online energy audit of my home, office, or dorm room and identify my next steps for saving energy and reduce pollution.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Land, Water, and Air

Calculate My Carbon Impact

Knowing our carbon footprint is the first step to reducing it. I will calculate my carbon impact and identify lifestyle changes that could reduce the carbon footprint and impacts on the environment. I will share my commitments to lowering my impact on the feed.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Health and Well-Being

Replace a Product

Small changes can make a big difference for health and sustainability. Using what I learned from auditing ingredients in the products I use, I will replace 3 toxic or harmful products I use with safer, eco-friendly alternatives.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Health and Well-Being

Go Get a Check Up

Regular health check-ups help prevent problems before they start. I will schedule or attend a medical, dental, or mental health check-up to take care of my well-being.

UNCOMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Health and Well-Being

Learn About Local Environmental Justice Concerns

Environmental issues often impact marginalized communities the most. I will spend 15 minutes researching environmental justice concerns in my region, who is affected by them, and local initiatives to address these concerns.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Health and Well-Being

Audit Toxic Products in my Home

Many common products contain harmful chemicals. I will spend 20 minutes researching chemicals found in products I use, and I will make a list of products I'd like to replace with safer options.

Participant Feed

Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.

To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Land, Water, and Air
How did changing your dishwashing habits make you more mindful of water use? What other small changes can you make to conserve water in your household?

We only run the dishwasher when it is completely full, and when possible, wash dishes by hand so that we don't run it as often as we used to. When washing, water gets turned off while scrubbing and is only used for a quick rinse.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Land, Water, and Air
An average American throws out about 240 lbs of food per year. The average family of four spends $1,500 a year on food that they throw out. Where would you rather use this money? What patterns did you notice in the food you threw away, and how can you address them?

I've actually been conscience of food waste for a while and have been working to make less so that we waste less, and for anything that I'm able to, I've been composting rather than just throwing it away.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Health and Well-Being
How did exercising each day impact your physical or mental well-being? What activity did you enjoy most, and why?

Exercising in the morning helps me wake up and prepare for the day. When I actually have the energy to work out at the end of the day, it helps to wipe away some of the stress from the day.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Land, Water, and Air
How did shortening your showers affect your awareness of water conservation? What other water-saving practices can you adopt in your daily routine?

We really don't need the amount of time many of us spend in the shower. I've used a shower to help wake myself up, relieve sore muscles, or just to relax. I'll commit to only doing what is needed and find alternate ways to do the other things.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Land, Water, and Air
What did you learn about forest-friendly foods? What sustainable food choices will you commit to making, and why are they important to you?

I was never aware that palm oil was in so many different products and that it was destroying rainforests by needing the land for planting. Going forward, I will keep the list of "safe" products in mind as I'm shopping and commit to educating my family about what to look for in their purchases.
