Karen's actions

Action Track: Community

Keep My Community Clean

At times it may not feel like it's up to us to keep our community clean and healthy, but we all have a role to play. Each day I am outside, I will pick up any litter I see.

COMPLETED 30
DAILY ACTIONS

Climate + Air

Consume only Needs vs Wants

The more stuff we consume, the more greenhouse gasses we put into the atmosphere. I will adopt a "Needs Vs. Wants" approach this month and only buy things I need.

COMPLETED 30
DAILY ACTIONS

Action Track: Community

Borrow Before I Buy

Why buy something I will only use once or a few times if someone nearby has it for me to borrow, and why not share something I have that someone may only need a few times a year? To reduce my consumption and waste, I will create or support the sharing economy with friends, family, colleagues or neighbors.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Climate + Air

Declutter My Home Without the Landfill

Each day, I will learn about responsible ways to dispose of items and de-clutter, clean, donate, repurpose or recycle unneeded items in my home to make sure that what I get rid of doesn't go into the landfill.

COMPLETED 30
DAILY ACTIONS

Climate + Air

Weekly Meal Planning

One third of all food produced worldwide is wasted, and so is the energy it takes to produce and transport that food. I will reduce food waste and save money by planning a weekly menu, only buying the ingredients I need and eating what I planned each day.

COMPLETED 30
DAILY ACTIONS

Freshwater + Oceans

Go Plastic-Free

Millions of tons of plastic is produced each year worldwide. Each day, I will conduct a plastics audit of what I buy and use throughout the challenge (kitchen, bathroom, personal care products, etc.), to see how single-use plastic shows up in my life. I will find plastic-free alternatives to these products and advocate for alternatives to single-use packaging at local grocery stores, product manufacturers, at work, or on campus.

Participant Feed

Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.

To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

I had a great time this morning, picking up leftover food containers, cans, bottles, and Sand Dollars! The Sand Dollar is not trash, but more of a sustainable part of the ocean and ecosystems. I collected 9 today. One for each grandbaby I have. Life is now complete.

This is a pure testament that protecting our planet is not all work...it can be fun too!!!

I'm taking the Eco Challenge to Oregon with me! Maybe I will do my trash collection on the beach each morning with my grandbabies.

I was excited to be able to attend the CO Barista Championships with Noel's team yesterday. I asked the organizers if I could have the decorations they used for our LS Barista championship in the spirit of sustainability! They were happy to oblige and I walked away feeling good about the planet!

This sounds crazy but I'm going to borrow a Kitchen Aid from my poor daughter who always accommodates my weird asks. I don't know how much I'd actually use it with only two people but I'm going to try.

I love it! Also, the best way to find out whether or not you would want one for yourself! :)
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Freshwater + Oceans Go Plastic-Free
Where did plastic show up on your life that surprised you the most? What plastic alternative products did you discover you may switch to?

I was surprised by the amount of plastic I seem to get when I buy fruits and vegetables. I purchased reusable cloth bags.

I researched getting a new RO system for my home. My neighbor had purchased one from Costco. I went to her house and watched how it filtered the water. I want to get one as well.

I researched RO systems and found out you can buy a water filtration system at Costco. My neighbor has it and loves it.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Climate + Air Consume only Needs vs Wants
Consuming only what we need vs. what we want can be really hard to do. What has been challenging about committing to this action for a month? What have you learned about yourself? Will you change any habits going forward?

Cut out rice, potatoes, flour, and sugar for a month. It's harder than it seems.

I pick up trash in the early hours of the morning around my neighborhood. It's been quite fun! I've been lucky picking up mostly cans
    so far!

I am considering a new Air Fryer. I went to my daughter's and borrowed one from her to see if I liked it
