UNCOMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Sustainable Innovation

Advocate For Better Food Packaging

When companies and governments make large-scale changes to their products and practices, it makes sustainability more accessible to the masses, in turn creating further demand for sustainable products, and the cycle continues. I will advocate for improved, sustainable food packaging through petitions, letters, or by supporting brands that prioritize eco-friendly packaging - and share my advocacy actions on the feed.

UNCOMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Wildlife

Donate to Support Wildlife

There are many amazing projects supporting wildlife and their habitats. I will choose a project or organization to support that helps species and habitats I care about and make a donation.

UNCOMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Community and Connection

Share Information about Local Resources

Knowledge of local resources helps communities thrive. I will learn about local resources, especially mutual aid groups, and share them with others on social media, in conversations, or in other ways that help spread the word.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Land, Water, and Air

Take Shorter Showers

Conserving water helps protect this precious resource. I will shorten my showers to 5 minutes to save water and reduce energy use - each time saving up to 20 gallons (75 L) of water!

COMPLETED 18
DAILY ACTIONS

Wildlife

Learn to be a Responsible Tourist

Being a responsible tourist means not disturbing wildlife and choosing eco-friendly tour operators and destinations that prioritize wildlife conservation and respect animal welfare. I will spend 60 minutes researching ways to travel responsibly to ensure my adventures support, rather than harm, wildlife and their habitats.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Health and Well-Being

Share a Health or Well-being Resource

Sharing knowledge helps others nurture their well-being. Through social media, in the Ecochallenge feed, or in conversations, I will share 5 health or well-being resources with friends, family, or my community to promote a healthier, more resilient world.

COMPLETED 18
DAILY ACTIONS

Health and Well-Being

Reduce Refined Sugar

Cutting back on refined sugar can improve energy, mood, and overall health. I will limit my intake of sugary snacks and drinks by reducing refined sugar in meals or snacks each day.

COMPLETED 18
DAILY ACTIONS

Community and Connection

Swap and Share with Others

Swapping and sharing resources reduces waste and builds community bonds. I will participate in 2 swaps or sharing activities, like borrowing items, attending or hosting a swap meet, or giving away items I no longer need to support a sharing economy with friends, family, colleagues or neighbors.

UNCOMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Community and Connection

Visit or Learn About a Culturally Significant Site Near Me

Sites of cultural and spiritual significance hold deep meaning for many communities, particularly Indigenous peoples. I will learn about or visit a site near me that is significant to the history, culture, or environment of the area. I will approach my visit with respect by researching its importance and guidelines beforehand, reflecting on how we can preserve these spaces for future generations.

UNCOMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Wildlife

Use Reusable Bags

Plastic bags do not always end up in landfills and if they aren't properly disposed of. In nature, they can be mistaken for food by many wild animals and harm wildlife. When I go shopping, I will be sure to bring my own bags to reduce waste and the chance that plastic bags could find their way into wildlife habitats.

COMPLETED 18
DAILY ACTIONS

Wildlife

Plant (or Adopt) a Plant

Landscaping with native plants, gardening, and having plants inside can have benefits for nature and our health. I will plant or adopt a new plant or grow one from seeds and post a photo of it to the feed.

UNCOMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Land, Water, and Air

Learn to Choose Forest-Friendly Foods

Our food choices can help protect forests and wildlife. I will spend 60 minutes learning how to choose foods that are grown in ways that protect forests, such as avoiding products linked to deforestation and seeking certified sustainable options like shade-grown coffee or palm oil-free products.

COMPLETED 18
DAILY ACTIONS

Replace Old Bulbs with LED Bulbs

Energy-efficient lighting is a bright idea. I will replace 3 incandescent light bulbs with Energy Star-certified LED bulbs, saving up to $14 per fixture per year.

COMPLETED

Sustainable Innovation

Choose a Product Made with Sustainable Materials

Every choice matters. I will purchase or switch to products made from sustainable or recycled materials to support innovation and reduce environmental impact.

UNCOMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

During Lent, many people choose to fast or give up certain foods, such as meat or sweets. One health tip is to stay nutritionally balanced while observing dietary restrictions. If you're fasting, focus on hydration and consuming nutrient-rich foods when you do eat. Whole grains, fruits, vegetables, nuts, and legumes can provide sustained energy. If you've given up meat, make sure you're getting enough protein from sources like beans, tofu, or lentils.

Do you take any supplements regularly? Quality matters more than quantity! Just because a supplement is marketed as "packed with nutrients" doesn’t mean it’s the best for you. Always check for third-party testing, certifications, and transparency in ingredient sourcing. And remember—whole foods should be your primary source of nutrients, with supplements playing a supporting role.

Today I spent some time reading about forest-friendly foods. This website listed 50 forest-friendly foods. I then took note of the ones available in my area locally (not imported) and will start incorporating them in my grocery list moving forward. This way I can help reduce greenhouse gas emissions and also support local food producers.

In today's world, where convenience often takes precedence, it's crucial to be mindful of what we consume. Reading labels for preservatives and additives is essential for maintaining our wellbeing. These ingredients, while extending shelf life and enhancing flavor, can have significant impacts on our health. Understanding what goes into our food helps us make informed choices that support our physical and mental health.

    Additives and Preservatives in Food:

    • Preservatives: Extend shelf life but may cause allergic reactions or other health issues in sensitive individuals.
    • Emulsifiers: Improve texture but can disrupt gut health.
    • Artificial Colors: Enhance appearance but have been linked to hyperactivity in children.
    • Flavor Enhancers: Intensify taste but may contribute to headaches and other symptoms.

    Potential Health Effects:

    • Mental Health: Ultra-processed foods containing additives have been linked to depression and anxiety.
    • Chronic Inflammation: Some additives may contribute to chronic inflammation, which is associated with various diseases.

For more detailed information, you can explore resources like Our Mental Health and KFF Health News.

Today I learned about sustainable fisheries in the Philippines. For example, the sustainable tuna program in our country aims to help local fisheries enhance their livelihood through sustainable fishing. This is important because overfishing and industrial fishing are threats to biodiversity and disrupt ecosystems. We need to source our food in such a way that nature has time to replenish itself.

I have veered away from teflon plastic cookware and opted for ceramic and stainless steel. Also I installed a water filter at home for drinking directly from the tap aside from our refillable water storage of 5 gallons to further minimize any water bottle purchase. Lastly we stopped using air freshener spray because of VOC and use eco-friendly candles and scents instead. I use these things daily without thinking too much and over time the accumulated pollution would be significant. So these changes are small but important.

    Reduce your food waste.
Plan your meals, store food properly to prevent spoilage, and get creative with leftovers. Composting food scraps instead of throwing them in the trash also significantly reduces landfill waste. Oh, and be sure to segregate!

Because the Philippines has a lot of microplastic waste, I will do better in refusing and reducing plastic use in our household - opting for biodegradable alternatives for bags, cutlery, and most of all reducing online purchases that use lots of plastic packaging.
