Prepare for Extreme Weather
Extreme weather events like hurricanes, wildfires, and floods can disrupt lives and upend our communities. I will take proactive steps to prepare for extreme weather by safeguarding my home and creating or updating an emergency plan and kit with essential supplies, evacuation routes, and contact information.
Community
Host a Gathering
Bringing people together helps strengthen bonds. I will organize and host a gathering, such as a potluck, coffee meet up, or shared meal, for friends, family, colleagues, or neighbors to foster connection and community spirit.
Soil and Food
Grow Something to Eat
Growing food builds resilience by connecting us to the soil and reducing reliance on long supply chains. I will grow edible plants—such as herbs, vegetables, or grains—in my home, balcony, or community space, strengthening both my food security and local biodiversity.
Personal
Go Get a Check Up
Regular health check-ups help prevent problems before they start. I will schedule or attend a medical, dental, or mental health check-up to take care of my well-being.
Water
Collect Rain Water
Rainwater collection reduces water waste and supports local needs. I will install a rain barrel or collect rainwater to use for outdoor tasks, such as watering plants or cleaning.

REFLECTION QUESTIONWaterHow did collecting rainwater make you feel about the cycles of nature and resource use? What did you use the water for?
Miguel Estrada 4/29/2026 3:07 PMOur gutters were already previously cut by the previous owners of the house for their rain barrels. (they took the barrels with them lol) so all we had to do was get our own rain barrels and hoses to continue collecting the water. We have been doing this since September and watering our plants and gardens with recycled rainwater really make a difference on the water bill as well as your conscious.

REFLECTION QUESTIONSoil and FoodWhat did you decide to grow, and how did it feel to start (or care for) your plants? What connections did it give you to soil or food resilience?
Miguel Estrada 4/29/2026 3:02 PMEvery year since living in Illinois my wife and I have made it a point to try and grow some of our own food. We have usually done a couple of small planters with tomatoes and some herbs. This time we went with some big planters. We started with seed in inside and just this week a lot of them have sprouted so we have moved them to the big planters. We currently have in the ground tomatoes, onion, lettuce, zucchini, broccoli and a variety of herbs. We plan on ordering more planters to start some for fruit next.

REFLECTION QUESTIONPersonalWhat motivated you to schedule or attend your check-up, and how did it make you feel afterward that you completed this action?
Miguel Estrada 4/29/2026 2:58 PMI had a very busy month. On top of the tornado that took out my cars I went for a checkup. The VA couldn't see me that day, so I went to OSF prompt care because I was feeling a little under the weather so figured it was a good time to go. Little did I know I was getting admitted to the hospital that day. I have what is called Diverticulitis which is essentially a pocket that forms in the colon and gets infected. I ended up going on vacation at the hospital for 4 days and was put on a diet and medication. I'm very glad I did it because it's forcing me to make some lifestyle changes to improve my health in order for me to stay healthy for myself and my wife and kids.-

REFLECTION QUESTIONCommunityWhat was the most rewarding part of bringing people together for a gathering? Did you experience any challenges in hosting, and if so, how did you overcome them?
Miguel Estrada 4/29/2026 2:53 PMFamily is a very big thing for me. So since I had a couple of broken cars in my driveway we couldnt celebrate my sisters birthday at my house like we planned. What we ended up doing is my brother offered up his home to use and I bought all of the food for a seafood boil and we cooked it at my brothers house.

REFLECTION QUESTIONPersonalWhat did you do to prepare for extreme weather events? Did being more prepared improve your peace of mind or make you feel more prepared to help others? Share any tips or resources you found helpful in the feed!
Miguel Estrada 4/29/2026 2:50 PMSo, due to the incoming Tornado on April 17th, we knew the winds were going to be bad so what we did was park all of our cars off of the street and parked them in between the house and garage as far back in our driveway as we could. This actually saved us because our neighbors tree came down and landed in our driveway. Lucky for us the placement of the cars ended up saving the tree from collapsing into our garage and everything inside of it. the cars were insured and have already been taken care of.-
