Over 70 million pounds of Sumo Citrus are now grown annually in California. Just over a decade ago, that number was close to zero.
I had never seen sumo citrus in our grocery stores here in WA prior to this year. I spotted them at my local grocery store last week—branded, neatly stacked, and proudly labeled “Grown in California.” That piqued my curiosity. Sumo Citrus is a signal of how transformations can occur over a decade.
Sumo Citrus, originally a Japanese specialty, was introduced to California around 2011 with a handful of trees. Today, California produces the vast majority of what is sold in the United States.
What changed? The climate.
California’s warming, drier climate has become ideal for this fruit, while traditional citrus regions in Japan face increased frost and typhoon risks. A shift caused by climate volatility is quietly redrawing the global agricultural map.
This is how climate change doesn’t just disrupt supply chains—it relocates them.
Trends that look small at first—like a few trees planted in 2010—can turn into entirely new industries.-

Here are some easy tips to get started zero waste lifestyle:
**Set up systems for bringing your reusables that help make the habit second nature. For example, keep reusable shopping bags in your car or by your front door, and put them back right after you unload your groceries.
**Start small. Living a zero-waste lifestyle is not about generating NO waste. That’s not the world we live in! It IS about using what you have first, and thinking about reusability and durability when you do need to buy something. It can be as simple as using up what you have in your fridge before buying more food - I’m looking at you, condiment hoarders!
**Don’t preach to your friends and family. You can’t expect them to be at the same place as you are in your zero waste journey. Your example will do the talking, and you’ll be surprised to see who hops on board!-

Thank you, Banu, for sharing wonderful insights! My husband keeps me accountable in remembering to bring my reusable shopping bags—because I often forget 🫣 But when that happens, I try to do without and hand carry out a snack purchase or load my cart directly into my vehicle. -

Great post. I'm still working on the reusable bag system that will work best for me. I have been known to carry a ton of items without a bag just to avoid plastic, but remembering my bags would make life a lot easier. :)

Today, we had a lunch & learn session with Kitsap Harvest. It's inspiring to see how something as simple as rescuing surplus produce can create such meaningful change for both people and the planet.
And thank you to everyone who joined us today—especially during Earth Week. These conversations remind us that sustainability isn’t just a global issue; it starts right here in our own backyards and gardens.
