Marissa's actions

Climate + Air

Declutter My Home Without the Landfill

Each day, I will learn about responsible ways to dispose of items and de-clutter, clean, donate, repurpose or recycle unneeded items in my home to make sure that what I get rid of doesn't go into the landfill.

COMPLETED 24
DAILY ACTIONS

Biodiversity + Wildlife

Volunteer in my Community

I will volunteer 4 hours in my community.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Biodiversity + Wildlife

Save the Bees

Bees are vital to ecosystems. To help save the bees, I will learn which local flowers provide nectar and plant them in my backyard or in a pot on my balcony.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Land + Forests

Explore My Area

When we explore natural spaces around us, our connections with them change. I will spend 60 minutes exploring a new area around my neighborhood, office, or campus (e.g., park, water body, nearby trail, community garden, green space, etc.).

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Land + Forests

Plant Trees

Trees capture carbon and produce oxygen that is essential to life on earth. I will support this important piece of nature by organizing or joining a community group to plant 1 native trees in my community, public parks, office location, campus or backyard.

UNCOMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Climate + Air

Consume only Needs vs Wants

The more stuff we consume, the more greenhouse gasses we put into the atmosphere. I will adopt a "Needs Vs. Wants" approach this month and only buy things I need.

COMPLETED 27
DAILY ACTIONS

Climate + Air

Calculate My Carbon Impact

Carbon emissions can show up in many surprising ways in our life. I will calculate the carbon emissions associated with my household and consider how lifestyle changes could reduce the carbon footprint and impacts on the environment.

UNCOMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Freshwater + Oceans

Understand My Water Footprint

Each of us has a water footprint, directly linked to our daily activities as well as the water required in the production of things we use each day. Understanding our water use is important for a healthy planet. I will calculate my water footprint and look for a few ways I can reduce consumption or waste, then share what I learned on the feed.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Participant Feed

Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.

To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

I have a local park near my apartment. I explored trails on my bike I don't normally gravitate to. I got to see that so much of my city is connected by trails!
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Climate + Air Declutter My Home Without the Landfill
How did it feel to intentionally declutter with putting things into the landfill? What did you learn along the way about yourself and our consumer and waste systems?

It felt good to see all the room that decluttering opened up in my home. I learned that I feel less anxious when I don't have as much clutter. With how much I decluttered it did concern me about how much waste we are okay with as a society. I tried to be mindful about how I got rid of things based on what I learned during this time.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Climate + Air Consume only Needs vs Wants
Consuming only what we need vs. what we want can be really hard to do. What has been challenging about committing to this action for a month? What have you learned about yourself? Will you change any habits going forward?

It was challenging because I can be bad about impulse buying. I learned that delayed gratification is just as good as instant and I will keep being mindful about my purchases.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Biodiversity + Wildlife Volunteer in my Community
How does volunteering enhance your community and/or change your relationship with it?

It allows me to see the impact of giving my time to the community first hand.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION

I planted some mist flower seeds for the bees in my area!
  • REFLECTION QUESTION

I was shocked to learn about my own Virtual water usage. I will be limiting online orders to needs that I cannot find locally. I also will make a conscious effort to not eat meat at least once a week! Those seem to be a couple of my biggest impacts, so those are my top two focus areas.
