Work and Organizations
Join or Start a Green Team
Green teams strengthen resilience by creating shared responsibility. I will join or help start a green team in my workplace, school, or community group to support sustainability and collaboration.
Action Track
Environmental Volunteer Opportunity - FCR Volunteer Day
Give back to your community & the environment by participating in an environmentally-related volunteer activity this April. Not only will you get points in the EcoChallenge, but this counts towards FCR's corporate volunteer day objective as well!
Personal
Meditate
Meditation helps build resilience and clarity. I will spend 2 minutes each day to meditate or create a moment of silence each day to reflect on things important to me.
Personal
Enjoy Fruits and Veggies
Eating a wide variety of colorful fruits and vegetables is a simple way to boost our personal health and support a more resilient food system. I will prepare and enjoy 2 servings of fruits and vegetables each day.
Personal
Exercise Daily
Daily movement supports our physical and mental health. I will spend 20 minutes each day exercising in a way that feels good to me, such as walking, running, stretching, or dancing.
Biodiversity and Wildlife
Learn About Local Keystone Species
Some species are especially important because they help keep whole ecosystems in balance. I will spend 2 minutes learning about a keystone species near me and how it supports biodiversity and resilience.
Biodiversity and Wildlife
Reduce Light Pollution
Too much artificial light can confuse and harm animals, especially those active at night. I will reduce sources of outdoor light or switch to wildlife-friendly fixtures to support healthy habitats.
Personal
Freezing Food as a Means of Preservation
Freezing food can be a good way to prevent food waste.
Water
Mulch the Base of Trees and Plants
Mulching helps soil hold water and reduces runoff. I will mulch the base of trees or other plants at home, school, or in my community to improve water retention and soil health.
Biodiversity and Wildlife
Picking up Garbage While in Nature
I will continue to pick up any garbage I see while camping, or hiking, whether mine or other peoples.
Biodiversity and Wildlife
Taking Care While in Nature
Taking steps to protect nature and leave it just as good if not better from when you stepped into it.
Personal
Building Community Bonds for Resilience
I will participate and build community bonds with neighbors, creating more localized community resilience.
Water
Dish Washing
I will actively work to conserve more water when washing dishes by hand, and turn the running water off as much as possible.
Share My Why
Share My Why
I will share my Ecochallenge story and why I'm taking action for the planet — and earn 15 points!

REFLECTION QUESTIONWaterWhat did you notice about how mulching helps the soil and plants? How does this small action connect to bigger ideas of water resilience?
Megan Duursma 4/30/2026 7:53 AMI help to mulch trees and plants with my family at their properties when I can, I have noticed that it helps reduce how often they need to be watered, and the plants seem to be happier when the mulch has been placed around them. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONBiodiversity and WildlifeWhat lights did you reduce or change, and how might this help wildlife near you?
Megan Duursma 4/30/2026 7:45 AM- Adventurer 🏔
I have reduced the use of white and blue light head lamps and lanterns while camping and walking at night. I have replaced it with red light options which helps reduce disturbance to nocturnal wild life. -

My Ecochallange story started as workplace initiative, however, as this month has gone by it has helped to highlight what I have already been doing that makes an environmental impact, as well as new or better ways on how I can continue making a positive impact for the environment. I believe it is important to look at our personal actions and how they impact the environment, as I would love to see nature thrive for years to come.-
