I live with my parents (both 65+), and a pet dog. I have lived 30 years of my life in Sharjah (an emirate in UAE), which has become infamous for its fair share of fires in high rise buildings. I was one of the many residents living in such buildings, until I realized how unsafe it could be in the case of an emergency where evacuation is required. In fact there was 1 such incident, and my parents and dog were home. Thankfully, the fire incident did not impact my floor and my family didn't need to climb down 16 floors on their own with a dog in hand! I wasn't aware of this, so I of course drove back home like a maniac thinking of all worse case scenarios. That day I decided to take the leap, change is not easy especially for somebody like me who embraces stability like it's Oxygen! I moved, and I ensured I move to an apartment that was within 2 floors from ground to allow easy evacuation for both my parents and pet dog.
I also got an emergency pack done - with the usual contents for any expat - Passports and valuables.
I went ahead and organized my parents medications into neat storage box (like first aid boxes), so it's easy for me to grab these boxes and head if required.

That sounds like it was not an easy thing to do, but you took action. Thanks for sharing, Puja!
I'm working on my emergency pack, too.
