Understand My Water Footprint

Each of us has a water footprint, directly linked to our daily activities as well as the water required in the production of things we use each day. Understanding our water use is important for a healthy planet. I will calculate my water footprint and look for a few ways I can reduce consumption or waste, then share what I learned on the feed.

Enjoy a Meatless Meal

Producing 1 kg of beef emits as much greenhouse gas as driving 150 miles, meanwhile, 1 kg of veggies or grains leaves a much lighter footprint! This week, I’ll shrink my climate impact by having 1 meatless meals and/or 1 vegan meals each day.

The why in my ecochallenge story 2025 (and quite frankly last year too) is to learn about ways to abate my carbon footprint, more often than not by small initiatives however significant in the long run. Our generation has seen it all, the vastness and slowly debilitating reserves. The switch from consumer mindset to steward/producer behaviour is not easy. And initiatives like ecochallenge are efficient ways of building that mindset, which is critical for future generations!

    **Long Post Alert**

I live with my parents (both 65+), and a pet dog. I have lived 30 years of my life in Sharjah (an emirate in UAE), which has become infamous for its fair share of fires in high rise buildings. I was one of the many residents living in such buildings, until I realized how unsafe it could be in the case of an emergency where evacuation is required. In fact there was 1 such incident, and my parents and dog were home. Thankfully, the fire incident did not impact my floor and my family didn't need to climb down 16 floors on their own with a dog in hand! I wasn't aware of this, so I of course drove back home like a maniac thinking of all worse case scenarios. That day I decided to take the leap, change is not easy especially for somebody like me who embraces stability like it's Oxygen! I moved, and I ensured I move to an apartment that was within 2 floors from ground to allow easy evacuation for both my parents and pet dog.

I also got an emergency pack done - with the usual contents for any expat - Passports and valuables.

I went ahead and organized my parents medications into neat storage box (like first aid boxes), so it's easy for me to grab these boxes and head if required.

That sounds like it was not an easy thing to do, but you took action. Thanks for sharing, Puja!

I'm working on my emergency pack, too.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Land, Water, and Air
What surprised you most about your water footprint, and how did it influence your perspective on water use? What changes can you make to reduce your water consumption, and how will these impact your daily routine?

I scored really well in the audit until of course it was time to answer questions linked with indirect impact. Eg. I am a foodie, while I love cooking at home, I indulge quite a bit on home delivery especially since after COVID. Mass production of anything, food included, has a water footprint. Sure, we are an entire ecosystem and clients like me support restaurants in their business model. However, reducing 7 deliveries a week down to say 4 a week will have it's impact on the long run.
