Land + Forests
Zero Waste Day
The impacts of our waste are far reaching. I will create zero waste for an entire day and share my reflections and learnings on the feed.
Action Track: Community
Raise Awareness for the Conservation of Freshwater and Oceans
I will spend 60 minutes learning more about the importance of freshwater + ocean conservation, and how I can reduce my water use. I will share what I learn with people in person, on social media, and on the feed.
Freshwater + Oceans
Understand My Water Footprint
Each of us has a water footprint, directly linked to our daily activities as well as the water required in the production of things we use each day. Understanding our water use is important for a healthy planet. I will calculate my water footprint and look for a few ways I can reduce consumption or waste, then share what I learned on the feed.
Land + Forests
Choose Eco-Friendly Wood and Paper
Trees provide food and habitat for local wildlife species, shade our streets and homes, and help keep our air and water clean by capturing pollutants. Buying products that help protect forests makes a difference. I will only purchase wood, furniture, and paper products from ecologically certified sources such as Forest Stewardship Council.
Freshwater + Oceans
Smart Seafood Choices
We need to support healthy seafood populations. I will spend 60 minutes learning about sustainable seafood choices, commit to making better seafood choices for a healthier ocean, and share what I learned on the feed.
Land + Forests
Explore My Area
When we explore natural spaces around us, our connections with them change. I will spend 30 minutes exploring a new area around my neighborhood, office, or campus (e.g., park, water body, nearby trail, community garden, green space, etc.).
Land + Forests
Regenerative Agriculture and Me
Regenerative agriculture focuses on farming and ranching in a way that supports life and restores the soil. I will spend 60 minutes learning about regenerative agriculture and find out if any nearby farms practice regenerative agriculture.
Biodiversity + Wildlife
Seek Alternative Gifts and Souvenirs
When traveling, I will seek souvenirs that support local communities and do not cause harm to the environment or wildlife.
Freshwater + Oceans
Cooking Oil Disposal
Pouring cooking oil down the drain can cause damage to waterways and ecosystems. I will learn how to properly dispose of cooking oil to help support healthy ecosystems.
Land + Forests
30 for 30 in Nature
Studies have shown that when we spend consistent time in nature, our health improves, our creativity increases, and our connection to the planet gets stronger. Each day of the Ecochallenge, I will spend 30 minutes outside (in a large or small patch of nature), then share my observations, reflections, and learnings on the feed.
Action Track: Community
Join a Cleanup Effort
I will organize or participate in a trash pickup at a local river, beach, or natural body of water.
Action Track: Community
Keep My Community Clean
At times it may not feel like it's up to us to keep our community clean and healthy, but we all have a role to play. Each day I am outside, I will pick up any litter I see.
Land + Forests
Carry My Trash
I will carry all of my unrecyclable, non-compostable trash with me this month, to raise my awareness of how much I send to the landfill. I will post on the feed my reflections, conversations, and actions I will take moving forward.
Freshwater + Oceans
Dishwasher Efficiency
Hand washing dishes can use more energy and hot water than a dishwasher. To save water, I will use a dishwasher and scrape, rather than rinse, dishes before loading them into the dishwasher.
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.
To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

REFLECTION QUESTIONLand + Forests Choose Eco-Friendly Wood and PaperBeyond carbon sequestration, what other benefits do forests offer you personally?
Jennifer Klotz 4/23/2024 1:42 PMI'm a bird nerd so the habitat forests create for an entirely different set of species compared to my suburban home or the ocean shoreline makes for an entirely different experience in nature! There are so many nooks and crannies for birds in a forest that it can be hard to see them but hearing their calls amongst the trees is just as exciting.-
Jennifer Klotz 4/24/2024 5:52 PMOh yes, familiar with that. I used to live by Cornell Lab in NY. I'm a member and big supporter of all their work and resources. I hope others see your message and look into it if they don't know! -
Blaise Love 4/23/2024 1:53 PMHave you checked out the bird calls library? It's really neat; you can find tons of recordings of bird audio of various species! https://search.macaulaylibrary.org/catalog?mediaType=audio

Jennifer Klotz 4/22/2024 1:11 PMMy husband and I attended a member's only event at a winery over the weekend. There was a neat station with a blind tasting of red wines....however, the negative impact on the environment wasn't something I could ignore. Look at this trash can! Full of plastic sample cups and the non-recyclable plastic packaging they came in. There were like 8 cups per bag and lots of people there. I'll be writing to them next. I understand the appeal of the cups- they looked like little wine glasses. However, when did plastic become fancy or high end???

REFLECTION QUESTIONAction Track: Community Join a Cleanup EffortHow does working with others to clean up your community make you feel? What results did you see? Please consider posting a photo of your cleanup!
Jennifer Klotz 4/22/2024 1:04 PMI worked with the cafe owner to organize the pickup. Participants got a free coffee or cookie when they turned in their trash! He chose to use paper bags to further reduce the use of plastic. After speaking with others who did it, the issue of neighborhood income was clear. Routes east or west of the main road led to very different levels of trash filling bags. It correlated with lower income neighborhoods having more litter than higher. Now the question for our community becomes How do we create equal clean space on both sides?

Jennifer Klotz 4/02/2024 2:25 PMCrowd sourcing a question regarding the cooking oil Action. While the resources under Learn More pertain to disposal of used oil, I need to know how to manage empty containers. I literally just finished both my olive and canola oils (terrible timing with this ecochallenge!) and they are in recyclable containers (one metal, one plastic). However, if I can't wash them out using the traditional method at the sink, how do I clean the container to recycle it? -
Jennifer Klotz 3/15/2024 3:18 PMWhile I've participated in Plastic Free July a number of years thus far, this will be my first Earth Month Ecochallenge. There is always something new to learn and the Actions created by this organization are not always something I would think of, which is great. I hope to adopt new methods even though I do a lot already.
