I already knew the basics; pollinators are key to our food, flowers, and the whole ecosystem, but taking a deeper dive helped me appreciate just how much they show up in our daily lives. Learning with my niece (who’s still very much not a fan of bees) made it even more fun. We talked about how her favorite fruit, strawberries, rely on pollinators, and how creatures like butterflies and birds do too. It turned into a really sweet moment for both of us to learn and connect. To help support our local pollinators, I picked up a lavender plant at the farmers market this weekend and I’m planning to grab another one next time I go. Little changes, but they add up.

We had so much fun with this! I turned it into a home efficiency scavenger hunt and had my niece (2nd grade) and nephew (kindergarten) help me out. Some of the tasks included checking how many LED bulbs we had and seeing what our thermostat was set to. It was such a fun way to get them thinking while also sneaking in a little learning.

When I asked my niece what she learned, she said that taking care of the earth isn’t just about what’s outside, you can help the planet right from inside your own home. My nephew chimed in with, “Leaving the fridge open too long is bad!”

My biggest takeaway? Nothing gets past those kids. I asked them to find three things that were plugged in but not being used, and they really went above and beyond. They were holding me accountable. It also made me realize how easy it is to overlook small habits that waste energy.

The best part? We all learned something, had fun doing it, and they even made little signs afterward as a “bonus challenge” to remind us to keep it up.

This activity lined up perfectly with my food waste journal! I have noticed that I tend to over serve portions, so I have been trying to either snack more throughout the day or serve myself less at mealtimes. But here is the catch, convenience does not always equal ecofriendly. I realized every snack I had today was individually wrapped in plastic. Literally every single one. That was eye opening.

Moving forward, I am excited to explore more sustainable options, like shopping the bulk snack section at the grocery store. That way, I can portion out just what I need, cut down on packaging waste, and reduce the chance of overbuying or tossing extras. It feels like a small change, but it could make a big difference in both food and plastic waste.

Spending time outside instantly lifted my mood. The sunshine and fresh air made the day feel lighter, and just a little vitamin D can shift your mindset. I noticed the flowers starting to bloom, especially a couple of tulips in my yard that are so close to opening. I’ve been checking them daily and look forward to seeing them fully bloom. Connecting with nature gives me a sense of calm and refreshes both my body and mind. It’s a simple, powerful reminder to slow down and appreciate the little things around us.
