Water

Save Water When Washing Dishes

Dishwashers can save water — if used wisely. I will only run the dishwasher when it’s full and skip the pre-rinse to reduce water and energy use. If I don't have a dishwasher, I will turn off the tap as often as possible while washing dishes.

What is resilience?

Share a Definition of Resilience

Sharing builds common understanding. I will share 1 definitions of resilience that resonate with me—through conversations, social media, or the event feed—to help others explore what resilience means.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Water

Mulch the Base of Trees and Plants

Mulching helps soil hold water and reduces runoff. I will mulch the base of trees or other plants at home, school, or in my community to improve water retention and soil health.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Water

Understand My Water Footprint

Each of us has a water footprint, directly linked to our daily activities as well as the water required in the production of things we use each day. Understanding our water use is important for a healthy planet. I will calculate my water footprint and look for a few ways I can reduce consumption or waste, then share what I learned on the feed.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Soil and Food

Grow Something to Eat

Growing food builds resilience by connecting us to the soil and reducing reliance on long supply chains. I will grow edible plants—such as herbs, vegetables, or grains—in my home, balcony, or community space, strengthening both my food security and local biodiversity.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Biodiversity and Wildlife

Reduce Light Pollution

Too much artificial light can confuse and harm animals, especially those active at night. I will reduce sources of outdoor light or switch to wildlife-friendly fixtures to support healthy habitats.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Biodiversity and Wildlife

Participate in a Habitat Restoration Project

Healthy habitats support resilient wildlife populations. I will join 2 restoration efforts, such as planting native plants, cleaning a natural area, or repairing trails to protect biodiversity.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Take the Pre-Survey

Take the Pre-Event Survey

I’ll take a short pre-survey to share what motivated me to join — and earn 15 points! (If I already took the survey by email, I’ll just mark this action complete to get my points.)

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Community

Swap and Share with Others

Swapping and sharing resources reduces waste and builds community bonds. I will participate in 5 swaps or sharing activities, like borrowing items, attending or hosting a swap meet, or giving away items I no longer need to support a sharing economy with friends, family, colleagues or neighbors.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Learn How to Save Pollinators

Bees and other pollinators are vital to ecosystems and agriculture. I will spend 120 minutes learning how to support local pollinators and take at least one action—such as planting native flowers or avoiding pesticides—to help sustain resilient ecosystems and harvests.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Biodiversity and Wildlife

Leave the Leaves

Fallen leaves, logs, and brush provide shelter and food for wildlife. I will leave natural features in my yard or community space to help strengthen biodiversity and soil resilience.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Biodiversity and Wildlife

Choose Native Plants

Native plants provide food and shelter for local wildlife and help ecosystems adapt to change. I will choose native plants for my yard, balcony, or community space instead of non-native or ornamental species to support biodiversity resilience.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

I chose native flowering plants and grasses that naturally grow in my area, such as native wildflowers and shrubs, because they are well adapted to the local climate and soil. These plants support wildlife by providing nectar and pollen for bees and butterflies, shelter for small insects, and food sources for birds. Since native plants evolved alongside local wildlife, they are especially effective at sustaining pollinators and maintaining a balanced ecosystem.

Planting natives helped me see how even small planting choices can make a real impact. I shared a photo in the feed to show the plants as they establish themselves and to hopefully inspire others to consider native plants too. Supporting local wildlife this way strengthens biodiversity and builds a healthier, more resilient environment right where we live 🌱📸
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Work and Organizations
How did working together on an environmental project strengthen relationships in your group? What does this teach you about resilience in organizations?

Working together on an environmental project strengthened relationships in the group by encouraging collaboration, open communication, and shared responsibility. As we planned and took action together, everyone had a chance to contribute ideas and support one another, which built trust and a sense of mutual respect. Working toward a common goal made interactions more meaningful and helped break down silos, turning individual efforts into a collective achievement.

This experience highlights an important lesson about resilience in organizations: resilience grows when people feel connected and engaged. When teams collaborate around shared values—like sustainability—they become better at problem‑solving, adapting to change, and supporting one another during challenges. Environmental projects show that resilience isn’t just about systems or policies; it’s built through strong relationships, teamwork, and a culture of shared purpose that helps organizations endure and thrive over time.

I shared a definition of resilience as adapting, learning, and moving forward through challenges rather than simply bouncing back. Others related to it and shared their own experiences, which highlighted that resilience is often built through support and shared experiences, offering a broader perspective on strength and adaptability.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Community
How did you participate in the sharing economy? (Consider posting a photo!) What are the benefits of sharing resources, and how does this strengthen resilience in your relationships and community?

    Marjorie Gizelle Dumdum's avatar

I participated in the sharing economy by lending and borrowing items within my community such as sharing tools and household items instead of purchasing new ones. Being part of this exchange made everyday needs more accessible while reducing waste.

Participating in the sharing economy helped reduce waste, save resources, and build trust by sharing items instead of buying new ones. Sharing strengthens relationships and community resilience by creating support networks that make people more adaptable and connected during challenges.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Personal
Before you started this challenge, did you think you were 'addicted' to sugar? How do you feel now? What was the most challenging part of reducing refined sugar, and how did you overcome it?

I initially felt dependent on sugar due to routine cravings, but after the challenge I feel more in control and aware of those habits. The biggest challenge was breaking routine cravings, which I managed by gradually reducing sugar, choosing healthier alternatives, and staying mindful and consistent.

Being mindful while dishwashing such as turning off the tap when not in use helped highlight how quickly water is consumed. Simple habits like shorter showers, fixing leaks, and running full loads can further conserve water at home.
