Marjorie Gizelle's actions
Climate + Air
Weekly Meal Planning
One third of all food produced worldwide is wasted, and so is the energy it takes to produce and transport that food. I will reduce food waste and save money by planning a weekly menu, only buying the ingredients I need and eating what I planned each day.
Action Track: Community
Keep My Community Clean
At times it may not feel like it's up to us to keep our community clean and healthy, but we all have a role to play. Each day I am outside, I will pick up any litter I see.
Climate + Air
Stay on the Ground
Carbon emissions from air travel is harmful to planetary and human health. Instead of traveling by plane, I will find an alternative way to accomplish the goals of an upcoming trip (i.e. telepresence, vacation locally).
Climate + Air
Sustainability Lunch and Learn
Learning in a social setting can inspire connection and change. I will work with a friend or colleague to plan and host a lunch and learn at work, school, in my neighborhood or other location to learn more about an environmental topic important to me. After the lunch and learn, I will share more about it on the feed.
Biodiversity + Wildlife
Beauty and Personal Products
Beauty and personal products can create a lot of waste. I will spend 60 minutes learning about the beauty and body products I use to see if they are refillable or recyclable. If not, I will reach out to the manufacturer to advocate for those options.
Freshwater + Oceans
Smart Seafood Choices
We need to support healthy seafood populations. I will spend 60 minutes learning about sustainable seafood choices, commit to making better seafood choices for a healthier ocean, and share what I learned on the feed.
Freshwater + Oceans
Use a Reusable Water Bottle
It's estimated over a billion water bottles are thrown away each year. Even if they were recycled, that still uses energy and resources from the earth. I will use a reusable bottle and stop purchasing bottled water, saving 2 disposable plastic bottle(s) a day.
Land + Forests
Carry My Trash
I will carry all of my unrecyclable, non-compostable trash with me this month, to raise my awareness of how much I send to the landfill. I will post on the feed my reflections, conversations, and actions I will take moving forward.
Action Track: Community
Join a Cleanup Effort
I will organize or participate in a trash pickup at a local river, beach, or natural body of water.
Action Track: Community
Borrow Before I Buy
Why buy something I will only use once or a few times if someone nearby has it for me to borrow, and why not share something I have that someone may only need a few times a year? To reduce my consumption and waste, I will create or support the sharing economy with friends, family, colleagues or neighbors.
Action Track: Community
Pick Up the Phone
I will gather a group of friends, family, neighbors or colleagues to make 3 phone calls to public officials or companies to advocate for planet-friendly policies.
Biodiversity + Wildlife
Volunteer in my Community
I will volunteer 3 hours in my community.
Climate + Air
Calculate My Carbon Impact
Carbon emissions can show up in many surprising ways in our life. I will calculate the carbon emissions associated with my household and consider how lifestyle changes could reduce the carbon footprint and impacts on the environment.
Land + Forests
Choose Eco-Friendly Wood and Paper
Trees provide food and habitat for local wildlife species, shade our streets and homes, and help keep our air and water clean by capturing pollutants. Buying products that help protect forests makes a difference. I will only purchase wood, furniture, and paper products from ecologically certified sources such as Forest Stewardship Council.
Climate + Air
Choose Renewable Energy
Renewable energy options are becoming more widespread and accessible. Not only are they good for the planet, they can help save money as well. I will sign up for my utility company's clean/renewable energy option. If my utility does not offer one, I will contact them to advocate for this option in the future.
Biodiversity + Wildlife
Endangered Species
Wildlife and biodiversity play an important role on our planet and are being threatened each year. I will spend 60 minutes each day learning about the current status of local or global wildlife and how I can align my actions to support their livelihood.
Biodiversity + Wildlife
Plastic in Clothing and Water
Synthetic clothing can contain plastic and shed harmful microplastics into our water. I will use a microplastics catcher in my laundry, or install a microplastics filter for my washing machine.
Freshwater + Oceans
Raise Awareness for the Conservation of Freshwater and Oceans
I will spend 60 minutes learning more about the importance of freshwater + ocean conservation, and how I can reduce my water use. I will share what I learn with people in person, on social media, and on the feed.
Climate + Air
Online Energy Audit
Energy use and waste is often invisible. I will complete an online energy audit of my home, office, or dorm room and identify my next steps for saving energy.
Freshwater + Oceans
Reduce Pollutants in Cleaning
Understanding cleaning product ingredients and their effect on water and biodiversity is helpful to our consumer choices. I will spend 60 minutes learning about how cleaning products affect our water and try making my own cleaning products to reduce pollutants.
Freshwater + Oceans
Low Water Gardening
Grass lawns are water-intensive and on average require about 30 percent of a household’s water consumption. Native plants are water-efficient and help maintain the balance and diversity of local ecosystems. I will plant native species with water-efficient plants to conserve water and improve the habitat, then post a photo on the feed to share.
Land + Forests
Personal Waste Audit
The waste we create daily can go unnoticed. I will track the waste I create in a day and post a photo log on the feed to see how much I create and where I can make different choices to reduce my waste going forward.
Action Track: Community
Plant Trees
Trees capture carbon and produce oxygen that is essential to life on earth. I will support this important piece of nature by organizing or joining a community group to plant 3 native trees in my community, public parks, office location, campus or backyard.
Land + Forests
Zero Waste Day
The impacts of our waste are far reaching. I will create zero waste for an entire day and share my reflections and learnings on the feed.
Climate + Air
Consume only Needs vs Wants
The more stuff we consume, the more greenhouse gasses we put into the atmosphere. I will adopt a "Needs Vs. Wants" approach this month and only buy things I need.
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.
To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

REFLECTION QUESTIONClimate + Air Stay on the GroundWhat was your process like for restructuring your trip? How can you avoid more air travel in the future?
Marjorie Gizelle Dumdum 4/30/2024 9:41 AMIf the place is near and can travel by land we will travel by land instead of air. and fly less -
REFLECTION QUESTIONLand + Forests Carry My TrashThis is no small task! What was eye-opening to you throughout this action? How will you change your actions going forward to reduce the waste you produce?
Marjorie Gizelle Dumdum 4/30/2024 6:12 AMThis is also easy for me because since I was a little my parents always told me that whenever I don't see any trash can I should carry my trash with me.
Picking up trash or carrying your trash is a tangible act of care and kindness.
It forced me to look at “my trash” and my own consumption through the same lens.
The hardest thing about this is trying to rethink my everyday activities and really make myself aware of the trash I output and to output them in a way that isn't at the expense of our environment.

REFLECTION QUESTIONClimate + Air Weekly Meal PlanningHow did it feel to plan out your meals and stick to them in an effort to reduce food waste?
Marjorie Gizelle Dumdum 4/30/2024 6:05 AMIt is easy for me since I've been doing this for months now.
There are many benefits that come along with meal planning such as eating more nutritious meals while saving time, energy and money.
My time is saved by having a specific grocery list, cutting out the aimless wandering through aisles. Aimless wandering can lead to a cart full of unessential odds and ends which can cost you greatly at the check-out, meal planning helps eliminate this. The meals that are prepared at home are often more nutritious than ones that might be consumed in a restaurant, adding another positive to meal planning. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONClimate + Air Consume only Needs vs WantsConsuming only what we need vs. what we want can be really hard to do. What has been challenging about committing to this action for a month? What have you learned about yourself? Will you change any habits going forward?
Marjorie Gizelle Dumdum 4/30/2024 6:02 AMI recently learned that our habit of consuming so much more than we need is ruining the planet.
The more stuff we buy, the more raw material is extracted and the more CO2 is emitted during the production process. Reducing our consumption is necessary to reach a sustainable future. Understanding the difference between needs and desires is critical because it could help us be more selective with our purchases. It is much easier to cut back on buying excess stuff when we understand what it is that we truly need and what it is that we just simply want. At least that is my theory and hope. And for that, we have to understand the difference between needs and wants.
I should improve my mindful purchase decisions.
This is no easy quiet since we are constantly bombarded with advertising and social pressure to consume but with self-discipline, mindfulness and patience it is absolutely doable.
we should also stop using the word “need” to justify flimsy purchases.
Cutting down on excess consumption however (optimally reducing it to the minimum) is necessary for a sustainable future. We must become more purposeful with our purchases and by looking inside and setting guidelines for ourselves is a good first step.
At the same time, the burden of saving the planet can not be put on the consumer entirely. Businesses must do their own part and develop a more responsible approach toward selling and producing stuff. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONAction Track: Community Join a Cleanup EffortHow does working with others to clean up your community make you feel? What results did you see? Please consider posting a photo of your cleanup!
Marjorie Gizelle Dumdum 4/30/2024 5:47 AMCleanliness isn't a matter of products and things; cleanliness is a matter of diligence and effort by people.
Presenting and engaging such activities like this is indeed of great help to our community if we only know how important every action we do. Through this advocacy, we can now share our little contribution and part in a more meaningful and significant way. With this concern, we could create an outlet to everyone who share the same views and passion in sharing their own effort and own little way to protect and maintain the natural environment through clean-up drive.

Marjorie Gizelle Dumdum 4/29/2024 12:37 PM🌎Whenever something breaks we so often pull out our wallets to replace it immediately. Before you do this consider if it’s something you can fix.
Oftentimes it is and it can be a lot cheaper to spend the time to fix an item rather than replacing it. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONClimate + Air Choose Renewable EnergyIf you are already signed up for your utility's renewable option, what other steps can you take each day to reduce your electricity usage? If your company doesn't offer a renewable option, were they open to your request of this in the future?
Marjorie Gizelle Dumdum 4/29/2024 12:35 PM🌎Unplug energy vampires when not in use, such as televisions, game consoles, and standby coffee makers.
🌎Use a fan(s) instead of your air conditioner. Cover your windows to keep sunlight from heating your home.
🌎Cook using your stove, microwave, or outside grill instead of your oven. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONClimate + Air Calculate My Carbon ImpactWhere in your life do you emit the most carbon? What change are you willing to make in your daily life to reduce this output?
Marjorie Gizelle Dumdum 4/28/2024 11:38 AMAt home. burning fossil fuels for electricity,
Switch off electronics. Turn off your lights and electronics when you’re not using them; otherwise, you’re wasting power. Even when left on standby your tech can still use electricity, so make sure you turn things off at the plug.
Hang out your washing. Rather than using a tumble drier, hang your laundry out to dry. Doing so could save around 153kg of CO2 yearly.
Switch to renewables. Many energy providers now supply electricity from renewable sources such as solar, wind, and hydro power. They’re often affordable too, meaning you save money and the environment. Nice.
