Green teams strengthen resilience by creating shared responsibility. I will join or help start a green team in my workplace, school, or community group to support sustainability and collaboration.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Biodiversity and Wildlife

Remove Invasive Species

Removing invasive species (species that are not naturally found in my area and can outcompete native plants) can help beautify nature around me and protect local biodiversity. I will learn about invasive plants in my area and, if possible, support or participate in at least one effort to beautify nature near me by removing invasive species.

COMPLETED 4
DAILY ACTIONS

Give back to your community & the environment by participating in an environmentally-related volunteer activity this April. Not only will you get points in the EcoChallenge, but this counts towards FCR's corporate volunteer day objective as well!

ONE-TIME ACTION

Community

Swap and Share with Others

Swapping and sharing resources reduces waste and builds community bonds. I will participate in 2 swaps or sharing activities, like borrowing items, attending or hosting a swap meet, or giving away items I no longer need to support a sharing economy with friends, family, colleagues or neighbors.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Regular health check-ups help prevent problems before they start. I will schedule or attend a medical, dental, or mental health check-up to take care of my well-being.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Water

Mulch the Base of Trees and Plants

Mulching helps soil hold water and reduces runoff. I will mulch the base of trees or other plants at home, school, or in my community to improve water retention and soil health.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Biodiversity and Wildlife

Donate to Support Wildlife

There are many amazing projects supporting wildlife and their habitats. I will choose a project or organization to support that helps species and habitats I care about and make a donation.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Take the Pre-Survey

Take the Pre-Event Survey

I’ll take a short pre-survey to share what motivated me to join — and earn 15 points! (If I already took the survey by email, I’ll just mark this action complete to get my points.)

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Biodiversity and Wildlife

Contribute to Community Science

Wildlife observations can help researchers and communities understand and protect biodiversity. I will download a wildlife monitoring app and log 10 animal or plant species I discover.

COMPLETED 4
DAILY ACTIONS

Soil and Food

Preserve or Store Food

Preserving food through freezing, drying, or fermenting helps food last longer, reduces waste, and ensures supplies during difficult times. I will preserve or store food during the challenge to strengthen household and community resilience.

COMPLETED 11
DAILY ACTIONS

Water

Take Shorter Showers

Conserving water helps protect this precious resource. I will shorten my showers to 5 minutes to save water and reduce energy use - each time saving up to 20 gallons (75 L) of water!

COMPLETED 6
DAILY ACTIONS

Community

Support Local Businesses

Supporting local businesses helps keep communities vibrant and resilient. I will choose to shop at 4 local businesses or restaurants, with a focus on businesses owned by people of color, local farmers, or community members.

    Biodiversity and Wildlife
What invasive species did you learn about in your area, and how do they impact native plants and wildlife? If you were able to support or partiicpate in an effort to remove invasive species, what did you do, and how it go?

I have been on a years-long battle with creeping bellflower in my backyard. It spreads through deep taproots that can be 2ft below, and will regrow from any piece left behind so it's important to get the entire plant. With all the rain we've been getting, it's easier to pull up the entire root system, and I am trying to get any small plants early before they have a chance to spread. They go into a black garbage to bake in the sun for a few weeks before going in the garbage (NOT COMPOST!).

I have also been struggling to remove an invasive flowering plant "Goose neck loose strife. It is beautiful and the flower looks like a goose neck. In my clay soil I have to dig, otherwise if i try to pull it up it snaps off and any small piece left will sprout another plant.

It's a lot of hard work, but rewarding when the work is done. I am dealing with some English ivy that showed up recently and like you said, it's easier to pull up the root system after it's rained

We have been seeing two hawks hanging out in the tree across the street - after logging them in iNaturalist, I learned they are Cooper's Hawks, a species whose population has thankfully rebounded in the last 50 years. Logging species on platforms like this can help raise awareness of the biodiversity in your area, and help scientists understand migration patterns and population density to better protect our wild neighbours.

I am an active member of my local Buy Nothing group. It is an amazing place to find new homes for anything and everything you could imagine, plus be able to get things you're looking for too. This helps reduce unnecessary consumption, reduce waste to landfill, and can even help save a few dollars while you're at it. I love supporting circularity in my community and boosting our resilience together. Highly recommend joining your local Buy Nothing groups!

Having a workplace Green Team is a great opportunity to get involved and further your company's efforts in sustainability. It's a chance to get to know your coworkers, and work together towards small changes that add up to a big impact. Getting different perspectives from various departments allows us to see the full picture, and implement projects that will have a positive effect around the office.

    Hi FCR team!

The EcoChallenge has officially begun. Check in daily and share any thoughts or stories you have during the month about your new habits (or anything you want!). Don't forget, the more you participate in our EcoChallenge, the higher your chances of winning in our weekly draws!

EcoChallenge also has a webinar on Resilience you can attend on April 23, at 12:00pm. Hear from behavioral, environmental, and organizational professionals on what resilience looks like, across these different perspectives. It should be a very interesting conversation!
