Land, Water, and Air

Understand My Water Footprint

Each of us has a water footprint, directly linked to our daily activities as well as the water required in the production of things we use each day. Understanding our water use is important for a healthy planet. I will calculate my water footprint and look for a few ways I can reduce consumption or waste, then share what I learned on the feed.

Land, Water, and Air

Learn to Choose Forest-Friendly Foods

Our food choices can help protect forests and wildlife. I will spend 15 minutes learning how to choose foods that are grown in ways that protect forests, such as avoiding products linked to deforestation and seeking certified sustainable options like shade-grown coffee or palm oil-free products.

Protect our precious resources by waiting until I have a full dishwasher load. By removing food crumbs before loading, it often avoids a second dishwasher cycle. This simple act conserves water and, by reducing the number of cycles, also saves energy.

To further reduce water consumption, consider washing the fruits and vegetables in a basin/large bowl. This method avoids the constant flow of water from the tap, allowing you to rinse the produce efficiently with a limited amount.

Taking cold shower helps save energy that warms up the boiler. My showers do normally take about 45 minutes to an hour, but I don't let the water run. I turn it off as I am doing hair treatments with the shampoo/conditioning. If I take out the hair treatment once a week, my shower is about 8 minutes long. Splash, Soap & Rinse. I notice our water bill goes down as well. Save money.

Thank you for the tips! I have been struggling so far due to having a water softener. It takes a little extra time to get that slippery/soapy feeling to go away on my skin and hair. Especially with long hair, when I have done quick showers on hair washing days in the past I've had greasy or soap film spots left in my hair if I don't take my time to get rid of the slippery feeling. But turning off the water between rinses will help me bring that time down by a lot!

Things we have been doing are:
    1. Leave appliances unplugged when not in use, since many of them draw large amounts of power even when they’re not turned on. (Air Fryer, Coffee Machine, Microwave, Television, Charge Station for Electronics)
    2. Lower thermostat as much as we can tolerate (Home: 74 Away:78/80 depends on AZ weather)
    3. Take cooler showers.
This allows us to cut cost on electricity bill and help our environment.
