Soil and Food
Choose Water-Smart Foods
The foods we eat carry hidden “water footprints” that affect rivers, soils, and communities worldwide. I will reduce servings of high-water-use foods and choose alternatives that help conserve water and support more resilient food systems.
Water
Take Shorter Showers
Conserving water helps protect this precious resource. I will shorten my showers to 5 minutes to save water and reduce energy use - each time saving up to 20 gallons (75 L) of water!
Personal
Exercise Daily
Daily movement supports our physical and mental health. I will spend 30 minutes each day exercising in a way that feels good to me, such as walking, running, stretching, or dancing.
Personal
Reduce Refined Sugar
Cutting back on refined sugar can improve energy, mood, and overall health. I will limit my intake of sugary snacks and drinks by reducing refined sugar in meals or snacks each day.
Soil and Food
Grow Something to Eat
Growing food builds resilience by connecting us to the soil and reducing reliance on long supply chains. I will grow edible plants—such as herbs, vegetables, or grains—in my home, balcony, or community space, strengthening both my food security and local biodiversity.
Personal
Prioritize Getting Enough Sleep
Good sleep is essential for a healthy body and mind. I will prioritize getting 1 minutes of quality sleep each night and develop a bedtime routine that supports rest and relaxation.

Prabhakar Devavaram 4/20/2026 3:20 PMI went to cheer the runners at the Boston Marathon today—one of my favorite days of the year in Boston!-
Melissa Cantarow 4/21/2026 9:30 AMSame! It's one of my favorite days, love hearing all the stories, reading signs and seeing the costumes. The elite and qualifying runners are impressive, but the charity runners are the ones that I'm there to see. -

REFLECTION QUESTIONSoil and FoodWhat foods did you discover have a large water footprint? How might shifting your diet help conserve both water and soil health?
Prabhakar Devavaram 4/14/2026 6:08 AMI was surprised to learn that my favorite fruit, mango, has a water footprint of approx 50 gallons per serving—about double that of apples (~25 per serving), However, apples come with - an apple a day recommendation. Nuts are even higher, at 200–500 gallons per serving—perhaps a reason to limit my cashew intake.

Prabhakar Devavaram 4/07/2026 6:57 AMI’ve been doing strength training and will spend an hour doing it today, hate every minute of it—but I appreciate the results!-

Before babies, I would strength train about 2 hours a day (how did I used to have soo much free time?!) and I always hated it through college (I was a college athlete) but one day, you will just fall in love with the process and how it makes you feel! Keep it up!

Prabhakar Devavaram 4/06/2026 2:40 PMAs the growing season approaches, I plan to start seed germination. I have focused on greens due to their shorter growth cycle and had success last year with Malabar spinach and kale (photo attached).

Prabhakar Devavaram 4/02/2026 8:26 AMWater footprint of foods is an interesting read. Tofu and chickpeas are on regular rotation at home , came out as lower water use protein foods, compared to beef etc!
