Attend a Clothing Swap
Participate in the 225 Home Office Swap (April 24/25) OR host one with your Store or DC team OR start one of your own with friends and family! A clothing swap is when individuals contribute their gently-used clothing, accessories, books and more to then swap with others. It's a great way to reduce your consumption, contribute to a circular economy, and renew your wardrobe!
Action Track: Community
Borrow Before I Buy
Why buy something I will only use once or a few times if someone nearby has it for me to borrow, and why not share something I have that someone may only need a few times a year? To reduce my consumption and waste, I will create or support the sharing economy with friends, family, colleagues or neighbors.
Climate & Ecosystems
Ecological & Xeriscape Gardening
SDG 14, 15
Studies show a grass lawn is water intensive and on average it require about 30 percent of a household’s water consumption. I will do one or more of the following actions in my yard or community to conserve water and improve habitat: plant indigenous plants, landscape with water-efficient plants, add mulching, replace a lawn, and/or use eco-friendly fertilizers.
Land + Forests
Explore My Area
When we explore natural spaces around us, our connections with them change. I will spend 30 minutes exploring a new area around my neighborhood, office, or campus (e.g., park, water body, nearby trail, community garden, green space, etc.).
Biodiversity + Wildlife
Seek Alternative Gifts and Souvenirs
When traveling, I will seek souvenirs that support local communities and do not cause harm to the environment or wildlife.
Land + Forests
Zero Waste Day
The impacts of our waste are far reaching. I will create zero waste for an entire day and share my reflections and learnings on the feed.
Education & Livelihood
Go by Bike
SDG 11
I will commute by bike 5 miles each day and get my muscles moving while avoiding sending up to (___) lbs of CO2 into Earth's atmosphere.
Basic Needs & Security
Try a New Vegan or Vegetarian Recipe
I will try a new vegan or vegetarian recipe and share how it turns out on the Ecochallenge feed, or with family and friends.
Health & Equity
Make Cleaning Products
SDG 3
I will make a few homemade cleaning products.
Basic Needs & Security
Volunteer in My Community
SDG 1
I will volunteer 5 hours in my community.
Climate & Ecosystems
Explore My Area
SDG 14, 15
Each day, I will spend 25 minutes exploring a new area around my neighborhood (e.g., park, water body, nearby trail, community garden, green space, etc.).
Education & Livelihood
Work-Life Balance
SDG 8
During the workday, I will schedule time for daily breaks during work days to practice work-life balance.
Basic Needs & Security
Know Your Produce
SDG 2
I will become a savvy produce shopper when buying organic and non-organic items.
Climate + Air
Use Public Transit
Public transportation reduces pollution, improves community, and creates safe streets. I will use public transit 1 miles per day and avoid sending up to (___) lbs of CO2 into Earth's atmosphere.
Economy & Communities
Choose LED Bulbs
SDG 7
I will replace 2 incandescent light bulb(s) with Energy Star-certified LED bulbs, saving up to $14 per fixture per year.
Economy & Communities
Analyze Your Utility Bills
SDG 7
I spend 10 minutes analyzing my recent utility bills, which might include electricity, gas, or water to see what my current usage is and determine if I can reduce my energy and water use.
Freshwater + Oceans
Understand My Water Footprint
Each of us has a water footprint, directly linked to our daily activities as well as the water required in the production of things we use each day. Understanding our water use is important for a healthy planet. I will calculate my water footprint and look for a few ways I can reduce consumption or waste, then share what I learned on the feed.
Freshwater + Oceans
Go Plastic-Free
Millions of tons of plastic is produced each year worldwide. Each day, I will conduct a plastics audit of what I buy and use throughout the challenge (kitchen, bathroom, personal care products, etc.), to see how single-use plastic shows up in my life. I will find plastic-free alternatives to these products and advocate for alternatives to single-use packaging at local grocery stores, product manufacturers, at work, or on campus.
Action Track: Community
Sustainably Clean Out Office Space
Our 225 Home offices are being cleaned out during April, with items going to FABSCRAP, recycling facilities, and the trash. Be sure to clean out your office area responsibly!

Patrick Delgado - Madewell Oakbrook 4/05/2024 7:29 AMIt's so fun to take a look at your daily actions, and their effect on your surrounding environment. It's kind of like tracking your food intake, you don't know what you're eating until you track it. Likewise, you don't know your impact on your surroundings, until you track it. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFreshwater + Oceans Understand My Water FootprintWhat did you learn about your water footprint and what are you going to do to reduce and be aware of the water you use?
Patrick Delgado - Madewell Oakbrook 4/05/2024 7:28 AMYou don't realize how big your footprint is, until you really sit down and look at what your daily actions are, and how they affect the environment around yourself. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONBasic Needs & Security Know Your ProduceWhat surprised you about the two produce lists? How will you use these lists for your grocery shopping? Have you used these lists before?
Patrick Delgado - Madewell Oakbrook 4/05/2024 7:26 AMIt definitely takes slightly more effort - to do the research and analyze which produce is which. However, it's a good step that we can all take, and it benefits the environment. A win-win! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONClimate & Ecosystems Explore My AreaHow can spending more time outdoors enhance your sense of place? Was there a new place in your region that was exciting to learn about and visit?
Patrick Delgado - Madewell Oakbrook 4/05/2024 7:25 AMI am trying to workout for at least 30 minutes per day, and take advantage of learning new areas around where I live. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONEducation & Livelihood Work-Life BalanceHow does practicing a work-life balance create a more sustainable life for you? How might it contribute to sustainability more broadly?

REFLECTION QUESTIONEconomy & Communities Analyze Your Utility BillsWhat was the most interesting thing you learned from analyzing your utility bill? What are some ways you can save energy and water?
Patrick Delgado - Madewell Oakbrook 4/02/2024 7:16 AMMy mom usually pays our utilities, but we get an online statement (we've gone paperless!), and it was definitely good to see what days we are most consuming energy. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONEconomy & Communities Choose LED BulbsChanging lightbulbs is an excellent first step toward energy efficiency! What's next for you?
Patrick Delgado - Madewell Oakbrook 4/02/2024 7:15 AMI have installed new lightbulbs in my ceiling fan. They are also wifi enabled, so if I forget to turn them off, I can pull out my phone and make sure I'm saving that energy in my house! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONAction Track: Community Borrow Before I BuyHow did you participate in the sharing economy? (Consider posting a photo!) What are the benefits of a sharing economy? How could a sharing economy change the dynamics you have with friends, family and/or neighbors?
Patrick Delgado - Madewell Oakbrook 4/02/2024 7:14 AMMy boyfriend and I are the same size in clothing, so when we go out to a bar or out with friends, we can easily expand our own closet by 2! It gives us both more options to choose from, without having to go to a store and buy new outfits. -
