Joseph's actions

Personal

Prioritize Getting Enough Sleep

Good sleep is essential for a healthy body and mind. I will prioritize getting 30 minutes of quality sleep each night and develop a bedtime routine that supports rest and relaxation.

COMPLETED 30
DAILY ACTIONS

Personal

Exercise Daily

Daily movement supports our physical and mental health. I will spend 10 minutes each day exercising in a way that feels good to me, such as walking, running, stretching, or dancing.

COMPLETED 30
DAILY ACTIONS

Biodiversity and Wildlife

Remove Invasive Species

Removing invasive species (species that are not naturally found in my area and can outcompete native plants) can help beautify nature around me and protect local biodiversity. I will learn about invasive plants in my area and, if possible, support or participate in at least one effort to beautify nature near me by removing invasive species.

COMPLETED 30
DAILY ACTIONS

Work and Organizations

Host a Cleanup Event with Colleagues

Shared projects at work strengthen teams and build organizational resilience. I will host or join 3 cleanup events with colleagues, classmates, or group members to improve our environment and strengthen collaboration.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Take the Pre-Survey

Take the Pre-Event Survey

I’ll take a short pre-survey to share what motivated me to join — and earn 15 points! (If I already took the survey by email, I’ll just mark this action complete to get my points.)

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Soil and Food

Learn About Indigenous Food Practices and Food Sovereignty

Indigenous communities around the world steward resilient food systems. I will spend 4 minutes learning about Indigenous food practices and food sovereignty, and reflect on lessons I can honor and apply.

COMPLETED 30
DAILY ACTIONS

Soil and Food

Preserve or Store Food

Preserving food through freezing, drying, or fermenting helps food last longer, reduces waste, and ensures supplies during difficult times. I will preserve or store food during the challenge to strengthen household and community resilience.

COMPLETED 18
DAILY ACTIONS

Soil and Food

Learn How to Save Pollinators

Bees and other pollinators are vital to ecosystems and agriculture. I will spend 10 minutes learning how to support local pollinators and take at least one action—such as planting native flowers or avoiding pesticides—to help sustain resilient ecosystems and harvests.

Top 3 Take Aways from this months challenge.
1 - We move through our days too quickly - The age of convenience has caused us to create more waste and think less about about what we're doing and where our trash and waste are going.
2 - Plants and Vegetables are vital - Pollinators, food systems, and people depend on a healthy green planet and without it we fail. Growing plants is not easy and farmers don't get enough visibility for their contributions to society.
3 - Knowledge is power - Knowing how your ancestors ate, survived, and lived in a world without dependency on technology, electrical grids, and grocery stores is true power. Surviving with the land and our co-existence with nature is fundamental to our being and going back to those roots may play a role in the battle against climate change.

This challenge has exposed me to different ways of thinking, different practices for sustainability, ideas that are practical and doable everyday. I only wish I had found out about the ecochallenge before being exposed to it through my environment class at HCC. Thanks Janet!

We discovered that 30% of the waste we sorted could have been recycled. The college will take this and try to increase recycling awareness.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Biodiversity and Wildlife
What invasive species did you learn about in your area, and how do they impact native plants and wildlife? If you were able to support or partiicpate in an effort to remove invasive species, what did you do, and how it go?

I learned about Garlic Mustard and how it outperforms native plants by sprouting earlier in the spring and making the soil toxic for other plants. Brought to the U.S for its medicinal and erosion prevention properties these plant are found along banks. It has a tendency to take over and kill off wildflowers. Its visual signature is its heart-shaped, jagged leaves and small white flowers.

Today, I watched chef Sean Sherman's Ted Talk on indigenous foods and WOW! He explains why we don't see native American restaurants. What a thought provoking idea that it should be strange that majority of our restaurants don't utilize local foods, or take advantage of the plants and vegetables that traditionally grow in that region. A stark contrast to the way our ancestors used to care for and utilized land. Very informative and down to earth. https://youtu.be/RhkJ-tSLUKk?si=ctnfMyv2WSAiE4IW

I wanted to learn about indigenous food practices beyond the commonly known "three sister" plants and discovered among other things that there is a fourth sister. The sunflower, she keeps the peace!
