Jennifer's actions
Freshwater + Oceans
Use a Reusable Water Bottle
It's estimated over a billion water bottles are thrown away each year. Even if they were recycled, that still uses energy and resources from the earth. I will use a reusable bottle and stop purchasing bottled water, saving 1 disposable plastic bottle(s) a day.
Action Track: Community
Raise Awareness for the Conservation of Freshwater and Oceans
I will spend 20 minutes learning more about the importance of freshwater + ocean conservation, and how I can reduce my water use. I will share what I learn with people in person, on social media, and on the feed.
Action Track: Community
Borrow Before I Buy
Why buy something I will only use once or a few times if someone nearby has it for me to borrow, and why not share something I have that someone may only need a few times a year? To reduce my consumption and waste, I will create or support the sharing economy with friends, family, colleagues or neighbors.
Climate + Air
Calculate My Carbon Impact
Carbon emissions can show up in many surprising ways in our life. I will calculate the carbon emissions associated with my household and consider how lifestyle changes could reduce the carbon footprint and impacts on the environment.
Action Track: Community
Keep My Community Clean
At times it may not feel like it's up to us to keep our community clean and healthy, but we all have a role to play. Each day I am outside, I will pick up any litter I see.
Freshwater + Oceans
Understand My Water Footprint
Each of us has a water footprint, directly linked to our daily activities as well as the water required in the production of things we use each day. Understanding our water use is important for a healthy planet. I will calculate my water footprint and look for a few ways I can reduce consumption or waste, then share what I learned on the feed.
Freshwater + Oceans
Dishwasher Efficiency
Hand washing dishes can use more energy and hot water than a dishwasher. To save water, I will use a dishwasher and scrape, rather than rinse, dishes before loading them into the dishwasher.
Freshwater + Oceans
Say No to Plastic Straws
An estimated 71% of seabirds and 30% of turtles have been found with plastics in their stomachs. When marine wildlife ingest plastic, they have a 50% mortality rate. By asking for no straw when placing a drink order, I will keep 1 plastic straw(s) of out of the ocean each day.
Land + Forests
30 for 30 in Nature
Studies have shown that when we spend consistent time in nature, our health improves, our creativity increases, and our connection to the planet gets stronger. Each day of the Ecochallenge, I will spend 30 minutes outside (in a large or small patch of nature), then share my observations, reflections, and learnings on the feed.
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.
To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

REFLECTION QUESTIONAction Track: Community Borrow Before I BuyHow did you participate in the sharing economy? (Consider posting a photo!) What are the benefits of a sharing economy? How could a sharing economy change the dynamics you have with friends, family and/or neighbors?
Jennifer Daniels 4/30/2024 10:32 PMI love the sharing economy! I've been a member of a freecycle/buy nothing/ pay it forward type group in any community I've lived in for decades now. There have been so many items I have gotten that I've used for a while, then passed along when I was done with it. I've discovered that I have a knack for finding local resources that follow this type of model, so I hope I can share those resources with others more often. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFreshwater + Oceans Understand My Water FootprintWhat did you learn about your water footprint and what are you going to do to reduce and be aware of the water you use?
Jennifer Daniels 4/30/2024 10:28 PMVirtual water use is a newer concept to me. It's tough, because some of what this footprint calculator was asking about were things that are necessities for our household (like pet food). We seem to be doing quite a bit for indoor use, outdoor use we can work on though - we are slowly converting our grass areas to clover and native plants that require less water. We do have a watering system that does not go on if rain is in the forecast. I'd love to set up a gray water system and/or rain barrels too! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFreshwater + Oceans Use a Reusable Water BottleWhat did you learn about the amount of plastic we consume and what actions will you take to reduce your use of plastic?
Jennifer Daniels 4/23/2024 3:40 PMPlastic is nearly impossible to avoid! I try to do my best already with using reusables, especially with items I can control. If I have a choice between two products and one uses less or no plastic packaging, that's the one I buy.-
ANGIE RAPOSO 4/25/2024 1:20 PMI try to do the same thing, although honestly, it's hard to make those choices when one option is much cheaper than the other.

REFLECTION QUESTIONAction Track: Community Keep My Community CleanHow does the act of picking up litter connect you more to your community?
Jennifer Daniels 4/23/2024 3:38 PMI think living in a litter free environment keeps us happier and feeling more relaxed because you can tell the community cares about where they live.-
Traci Bergmann 4/23/2024 9:52 PMI completely agree!

REFLECTION QUESTIONFreshwater + Oceans Say No to Plastic StrawsWhat single-use items (e.g. straws, coffee cups, vegetable bags, plastic bags) do you regularly use? What could be substituted instead?
Jennifer Daniels 4/19/2024 3:44 PMI try my best to not use plastic single-use items, but can be difficult to avoid if we get food to go. Iced coffee cups are one that I struggle with! I only get coffee to go less than once per week, so at least it's not frequent. Instead of plastic bags for veggies at the grocery store, I either leave items loose like a bunch of bananas, onions, potatoes or I use my reusable mesh bags!-
ANGIE RAPOSO 4/20/2024 1:38 PMI agree about the single use coffee cuts. I don’t do it often. But I feel weird bringing in my own cut. I guess something I need to work on.

REFLECTION QUESTIONLand + Forests 30 for 30 in NatureWhat have you noticed about how it feels to spend consistent time outside?
Jennifer Daniels 4/19/2024 8:11 AMSpending time outside is great for both physical and mental health - I feel refreshed after being outside!-
ANGIE RAPOSO 4/20/2024 1:39 PMSo do I. I love gardening because it gets me outside. -
Traci Bergmann 4/19/2024 12:24 PMMe too! My boyfriend and I love to spend the day outside gardening and doing yardwork. It's fun and rewarding.

REFLECTION QUESTIONFreshwater + Oceans Dishwasher EfficiencyHow can your region/household prepare for changing water situations in order to become more resilient?
Jennifer Daniels 4/18/2024 9:13 AMAlthough we are not in a drought emergency anymore, we should still be thinking about water conservation all the time. So many easy ways to do this!-
ANGIE RAPOSO 4/18/2024 1:33 PMI know my husband and I have done drip system in our front and back yard. Helps with weeds too! Plus, we pulled all grass and have decorative rock instead.

Jennifer Daniels 4/12/2024 8:54 AMThe month is going by fast! Yesterday, part of my outside time was spent on a tour of our campus water systems - it always impresses me how the beautiful ponds and lakes of our campus were intentionally designed to conserve water.-
ANGIE RAPOSO 4/12/2024 11:25 AMit was good information and a beautiful day to be out for a walk.
Thanks for setting this up, Jennifer.
