Sustainable Innovation

Sustainable actions at Alliance

Consider sustainability and wellness efforts while on the clock. Think about how you can make a positive impact and what might prevent success. Discuss with a coworker and problem-solve.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Community and Connection

Share Information about Local Resources

Knowledge of local resources helps communities thrive. I will learn about local resources, especially mutual aid groups, and share them with others on social media, in conversations, or in other ways that help spread the word.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Land, Water, and Air

Join a Cleanup Effort

Working together to clean up public spaces helps the environment and builds community. I will participate in 1 community cleanup efforts in my neighborhood or local area.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Land, Water, and Air

Collect Rain Water

Rainwater collection reduces water waste and supports gardens. I will install a rain barrel or collect rainwater to use for 1 outdoor tasks, such as watering plants or cleaning.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Community and Connection

Attend a Local Event

Local events such as farmers' markets, festivals, or community meetings like town halls are great ways to feel part of a community. I will attend 2 community events to connect with others and learn more about my area.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Community and Connection

Offer a Skill or Service

Sharing our talents can benefit those around us. I will offer my skills or services to support my community, such as helping someone with a task, tutoring, repairing something, or volunteering my expertise.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Land, Water, and Air

Reduce Vehicle Idling

Idling cars wastes fuel, contributes to climate change, and pollutes the air in our communities. I will turn off my engine when waiting in my car to reduce air pollution and carbon emissions.

COMPLETED 29
DAILY ACTIONS

Community and Connection

Explore My Area

Discovering what’s nearby fosters a deeper connection to my community. I will explore 3 new places in my area, such as parks, historical sites, or local businesses.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Land, Water, and Air

Take Shorter Showers

Conserving water helps protect this precious resource. I will shorten my showers to 5 minutes to save water and reduce energy use - each time saving up to 20 gallons (75 L) of water!

COMPLETED 29
DAILY ACTIONS

Wildlife

Learn to Grow Plants Your Way

Growing plants can be rewarding and can create habitats big and small for wildlife. And, we can grow things almost anywhere! I will spend 30 minutes researching options for growing plants either inside or outside.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Wildlife

Use Reusable Bags

Plastic bags do not always end up in landfills and if they aren't properly disposed of. In nature, they can be mistaken for food by many wild animals and harm wildlife. When I go shopping, I will be sure to bring my own bags to reduce waste and the chance that plastic bags could find their way into wildlife habitats.

COMPLETED 29
DAILY ACTIONS

Health and Well-Being

Reduce Refined Sugar

Cutting back on refined sugar can improve energy, mood, and overall health. I will limit my intake of sugary snacks and drinks by reducing refined sugar in meals or snacks each day.

COMPLETED 29
DAILY ACTIONS

Sustainable Innovation

Replace Old Bulbs with LED Bulbs

Energy-efficient lighting is a bright idea. I will replace 4 incandescent light bulbs with Energy Star-certified LED bulbs, saving up to $14 per fixture per year.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Land, Water, and Air

Learn to Choose Forest-Friendly Foods

Our food choices can help protect forests and wildlife. I will spend 20 minutes learning how to choose foods that are grown in ways that protect forests, such as avoiding products linked to deforestation and seeking certified sustainable options like shade-grown coffee or palm oil-free products.

COMPLETED 29

Host a Gathering

Bringing people together helps strengthen bonds. I will organize and host a gathering, such as a potluck, coffee meet up, or shared meal, for friends, family, colleagues, or neighbors to foster connection and community spirit.

  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Land, Water, and Air
What did you learn about forest-friendly foods? What sustainable food choices will you commit to making, and why are they important to you?

    Cindy Cuasito's avatar

Although forest-friendly food has numerous benefits, the impact of shipping and packaging offset the benefits. Sometimes eco-friendly materials are not always used.

This is so true. It can be difficult to source products that don't defy the whole point. I feel fortunate to live in a farming community where it is a little easier, but even still not always presented with eco-friendly materials to sell...plastic is so ubiquitous!
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Land, Water, and Air
How did shortening your showers affect your awareness of water conservation? What other water-saving practices can you adopt in your daily routine?

    Cindy Cuasito's avatar
    Cindy Cuasito 4/22/2025 8:18 AM
Not only does it help conserve water, but it also reduces the environmental impact of products used in the shower. Less time in the shower, less soap, shampoo and conditioners going down the drain.

    Wildlife
How difficult was this challenge for you? What made it easy or difficult?

    Cindy Cuasito's avatar
    Cindy Cuasito 4/22/2025 7:45 AM
It used to be somewhat difficult, because I would always run out and forget them. Now I keep cloth bags in all my vehicles just in case. They are biodegradable and much more environmentally friendly.

Annual Dental check-up. Not my favorite time of the year, but it does contribute to my overall health.

Got my first little red berry and so excited to try one!! Not being a green thumb and really never having an interest in growing anything, I have really enjoyed watching this little thing thrive.

    Cindy Cuasito's avatar
    Cindy Cuasito 4/08/2025 2:51 PM
I am neither unfortunately. I never had the time or developed a green thumb and plants I was given would suffer a slow dehydrated death! But I was recently given a small fruit plant (strawberries) for my Birthday. And I must say, I am a bit obsessed with it. It has become very relaxing and fun to watch the little berries develop and since it is my favorite fruit, I am excited to see how they will turn out.

So relatable! I've always joked about not having a "green thumb" when it came to plants. But surprisingly, the new garden we decided to plant this year seems to be defying all my past failures. I'm staying cautiously optimistic and crossing my fingers that this lucky streak continues! Glad to see you've found some excitement in yours too!

I have been going out more and exploring local craft fairs, farmers markets and listening local bands. It encourages me to step out of my comfort zones and exposes me to different cultures.

  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Land, Water, and Air
How did being mindful of vehicle idling change your perspective on fuel consumption and air quality? What other transportation habits can you adopt to reduce your environmental impact?

    Cindy Cuasito's avatar
    Cindy Cuasito 4/03/2025 9:31 AM
Idling releases harmful pollutants like carbon dioxide (CO2), nitrogen oxides (NOx), and particulate matter, contributing to air pollution and climate change. It also wastes fuel which costs money. I use the " stop-start" feature that is in my vehicle which helps.
