- 17-DAY STREAK
As we come to a close for April's Eco Challenge, I want to reflect on everything I was able to complete this month and all that I learned. I spent a great deal of time this month learning about ways my family and I can be a little more self-sufficient when considering emergency preparedness. I now have a rain barrel, I learned how to turn off my water heater and use that water in an emergency. I bought solar radio and charger tools for my family, and we are starting our garden. I spent wonderful time outdoors just enjoying myself, my yard, local nature and my neighborhood. Even though I wasn't able to participate in Kitsap Bank's clean up event, I took a bag and my grabbers with me to a park and a golf course and cleaned up garbage everywhere I could. My family and I audited all of the plastic we use and discard. We have purchased glass containers for leftovers and reuseable water bottles to reduce plastic use. I have even shared some of my house plant cuttings with friends and neighbors as we discuss the need for plants in homes and gardens. What an amazing month! I am going to keep this going to see how much I can accomplish in the rest of the year. Thank you for this opportunity.-

REFLECTION QUESTIONCommunity and ConnectionAfter learning about Kitsap Harvest’s gleaning efforts, what small action could you take—whether in your own backyard, neighborhood, or community—to help reduce food waste or support local food security?
Jamie Cremeans 4/23/2025 10:00 AMI could start my own garden and share my items with a local foodbank or my neighbors. All great ideas. -

The Eco Challenge this year has been great. I have been participating a lot. All the Easter baskets I gave my family this year came with seeds and an emergency solar/crank - radio/charger. I have also added more stickers to my reuseable water bottle. It gives me a chance to talk about it every time I get a comment about my new stickers.

My most unexpected piece of trash was a firework, an exploded rocket to be exact. Our neighborhood cleaned the road that leads down to our cul-de-sac. It was nice to be outside with my neighbors, laughing and interacting together. -

My husband and I have begun preparing our weekly meals on Sundays. This not only keeps us from hitting the fast-food chains but also reduces all of that packaging waste. We reduce the plastic, by using glass reusable containers and reusable water bottles.-

I love shopping locally. In Port Orchard we have a cute little downtown. I chose to walk around and shop yesterday. Coffee Oasis has amazing coffee and sandwiches. My husband loved the new comic bookstore, and we spent an hour or more in the antique shop. You have to come visit us in Port Orchard.-

Our family has invested in reuseable water bottles. I know we are one of the last families to get on that bandwagon, but we finally made it. I am loving putting stickers on mine.-
Jennifer Klotz 4/02/2025 8:16 AMYes you may be late to the reusable water bottle party, but the world gets better with each person who joins us, so well done! And I love that you found extra joy in it by applying stickers. I'm sure the kiddos like that part too. Keep up the good work!
