Action Track: Community
Plant Trees
Trees capture carbon and produce oxygen that is essential to life on earth. I will support this important piece of nature by organizing or joining a community group to plant 1 native trees in my community, public parks, office location, campus or backyard.
Action Track: Community
Borrow Before I Buy
Why buy something I will only use once or a few times if someone nearby has it for me to borrow, and why not share something I have that someone may only need a few times a year? To reduce my consumption and waste, I will create or support the sharing economy with friends, family, colleagues or neighbors.
Freshwater + Oceans
Go Plastic-Free
Millions of tons of plastic is produced each year worldwide. Each day, I will conduct a plastics audit of what I buy and use throughout the challenge (kitchen, bathroom, personal care products, etc.), to see how single-use plastic shows up in my life. I will find plastic-free alternatives to these products and advocate for alternatives to single-use packaging at local grocery stores, product manufacturers, at work, or on campus.
Freshwater + Oceans
Share My "Why"
I will record a video to share why I am taking action this Earth Month, a sustainable swap I've made, and/or a local conservation effort in my area.
Land + Forests
Personal Waste Audit
The waste we create daily can go unnoticed. I will track the waste I create in a day and post a photo log on the feed to see how much I create and where I can make different choices to reduce my waste going forward.
Climate + Air
Low Carbon Diet
Carbon is emitted into the atmosphere in a variety of ways, including through the foods we eat and food we waste. I will learn about low carbon foods and replace higher carbon foods with them in my diet.
Climate + Air
Consume only Needs vs Wants
The more stuff we consume, the more greenhouse gasses we put into the atmosphere. I will adopt a "Needs Vs. Wants" approach this month and only buy things I need.
Biodiversity + Wildlife
Biodiversity and Me
I will spend at least 10 minutes each day researching what biodiversity is, how biodiversity positively impacts our world, and how the loss of biodiversity harms it. I will share what I learn on the feed.
Land + Forests
30 for 30 in Nature
Studies have shown that when we spend consistent time in nature, our health improves, our creativity increases, and our connection to the planet gets stronger. Each day of the Ecochallenge, I will spend 30 minutes outside (in a large or small patch of nature), then share my observations, reflections, and learnings on the feed.
Action Track: Community
Visit the Earth Day Celebration in the Agora
On Monday April 22 from 10:30-2:00pm, the Sustainability Office is hosting an Earth Day celebration! Come and learn about sustainability and climate action initiatives taking place at JAC and in the wider community. Take part in a workshop and pick up some seedlings or house plants!
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.
To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

Shannon Coulter-Low 4/22/2024 6:03 AMOn Sunday I picked up a Serviceberry tree from my town. The trees were being given away for free in honour of Earth Day! All of the trees, including the Serviceberry, were native plants. Serviceberries have beautiful white flowers in the spring and edible fruits in the fall. The tree is going to be a great addition to my yard, where I am trying encourage native plant life. I don't have a picture of my tree, but here is an image of what it will look like.-
Melissa Luedtke 4/22/2024 6:09 AMWe also received free trees for earth day . Our family loves planting them🌎💚

REFLECTION QUESTIONLand + Forests 30 for 30 in NatureWhat have you noticed about how it feels to spend consistent time outside?
Shannon Coulter-Low 4/02/2024 7:08 AMSpending time outside in a nice environment has always brought me a sense of calm. On Monday I went for a walk on one of the nature trails near my home. Some small flowers are already peeking out and the sun was warm on my face. I always think that spending time outdoors in spring helps to wake up our minds and bodies from the stupor of the dark winter months!-

As the co-organizer of the Eco-Challenge at JAC, I promote the Challenge every year because I believe it is a tangible and rewarding tool to show the impact of collective actions. At the end of April, our team's dashboard will show how each individual action adds up. Individual actions have power when done in the context of community.
Before we start in April, I encourage everyone to tell your friends, your family, your students and your colleagues about what you are doing! Even if they do not join us, hearing about what you are doing might inspire them. Working alone in a silo doesn't have a huge impact, but inspiring and motivating others is the most effective tool for making change!
