Melanie Joy's actions
Land + Forests
30 for 30 in Nature
Studies have shown that when we spend consistent time in nature, our health improves, our creativity increases, and our connection to the planet gets stronger. Each day of the Ecochallenge, I will spend 30 minutes outside (in a large or small patch of nature), then share my observations, reflections, and learnings on the feed.
Land + Forests
Keep My Community Clean
At times it may not feel like it's up to us to keep our community clean and healthy, but we all have a role to play. Each day I am outside, I will pick up any litter I see.
Land + Forests
Compost Food Waste
Food in the landfill is one of the main sources of greenhouse gasses. I will avoid sending up to .69 lbs (.31 kg) of food waste to the landfill per day by composting my food.
Biodiversity + Wildlife
Volunteer in my Community
I will volunteer 4 hours in my community.
Biodiversity + Wildlife
Save the Bees
Bees are vital to ecosystems. To help save the bees, I will learn which local flowers provide nectar and plant them in my backyard or in a pot on my balcony.
Action Track: Community
Join a Cleanup Effort
I will organize or participate in a trash pickup at a local river, beach, or natural body of water.
Freshwater + Oceans
Say No to Plastic Straws
An estimated 71% of seabirds and 30% of turtles have been found with plastics in their stomachs. When marine wildlife ingest plastic, they have a 50% mortality rate. By asking for no straw when placing a drink order, I will keep 1 plastic straw(s) of out of the ocean each day.
Action Track: Community
Share Sustainability Inspiration through Connections
Share a story, resource, learning opportunity, eco-tip, or other sustainability focused connection with a partner or someone in my community every day to inspire action.
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.
To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

REFLECTION QUESTIONBiodiversity + Wildlife Save the BeesWhat did you plant for bees in your area? Please consider uploading a photo!
Melanie Joy Clarke 4/30/2024 9:19 AMHoneysuckle! 3 new plants in my yard against the fence to allow it space to climb. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONLand + Forests Keep My Community CleanHow does the act of picking up litter connect you more to your community?
Melanie Joy Clarke 4/30/2024 9:17 AMPicked up a bunch of trash around the Clinton Lake State park this weekend while camping. Sad how many disposables are along the trails and in the lake. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONLand + Forests Compost Food WasteNew to composting? Be sure to check out the action resource links to learn tips and more about it. As you transition from throwing food away to composting, what do you notice about how much you are tossing? How will you use your compost once it is ready?
Melanie Joy Clarke 4/30/2024 9:16 AMWe were mindful of what could be composted versus trashed during our camping trip this weekend. Easier than I thought it would be. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONLand + Forests 30 for 30 in NatureWhat have you noticed about how it feels to spend consistent time outside?
Melanie Joy Clarke 4/30/2024 9:15 AMI spend plenty of time outside every weekend but struggle during the week with most of my work done in front of a screen. Finding new ways to hold space for myself for a midday break to step outside, or weed my garden each evening even if not the clearest weather. Amazing how much closer to our planet and people I can feel just being outside. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFreshwater + Oceans Say No to Plastic StrawsWhat single-use items (e.g. straws, coffee cups, vegetable bags, plastic bags) do you regularly use? What could be substituted instead?
Melanie Joy Clarke 4/30/2024 9:13 AMStraws get in the way of the delicious refresher inclusions. :)-
Sireesha Manyam 4/30/2024 9:20 AMPaper Straws, Jawar spoons, Banana leaves instead of plastic plates, can be use the items made of bamboo, jawar spoon
