ONE-TIME ACTION

Land, Water, and Air

Understand My Water Footprint

Each of us has a water footprint, directly linked to our daily activities as well as the water required in the production of things we use each day. Understanding our water use is important for a healthy planet. I will calculate my water footprint and look for a few ways I can reduce consumption or waste, then share what I learned on the feed.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Land, Water, and Air

Calculate My Carbon Impact

Knowing our carbon footprint is the first step to reducing it. I will calculate my carbon impact and identify lifestyle changes that could reduce the carbon footprint and impacts on the environment. I will share my commitments to lowering my impact on the feed.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Land, Water, and Air

Conduct a Home Energy Audit

Reducing energy use helps protect the air and climate. I will complete an online energy audit of my home, office, or dorm room and identify my next steps for saving energy and reduce pollution.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Land, Water, and Air

Reduce Food Waste

Wasting food also wastes water, energy, and resources. I will keep a daily log of food I throw away during the Ecochallenge, either because it went bad before I ate it, I put too much on my plate, or it was scraps from food preparation, and commit to reducing my food waste throughout the challenge.

COMPLETED 30
DAILY ACTIONS

Land, Water, and Air

Learn About Water Justice

Access to clean water is a basic right, yet not everyone has it. I will spend 5 minutes learning about water justice issues and who is affected.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Produce No Waste for a Day

The impacts of our waste are far reaching. I will create zero waste for an entire day and share my reflections and learnings on the feed.

COMPLETED 30
DAILY ACTIONS

Land, Water, and Air

Save Water When Washing Dishes

Dishwashers can save water — if used wisely. I will only run the dishwasher when it’s full and skip the pre-rinse to reduce water and energy use. If I don't have a dishwasher, I will turn off the tap as often as possible while washing dishes.

COMPLETED 30
DAILY ACTIONS

Choose Eco-Friendly Wood and Paper Products

Trees provide food and habitat for local wildlife species, shade our streets and homes, and help keep our air and water clean by capturing pollutants. I will learn about certification labels and buy wood and paper products certified as sustainable or recycled to protect forests and reduce environmental harm.

COMPLETED 30

Schools can play a crucial role in shaping future environmental leaders by embedding sustainability into both their curriculum and culture. This goes beyond science lessons—it involves cultivating environmental awareness across all subjects, encouraging critical thinking about real-world issues, and offering hands-on opportunities like school gardens, recycling programs, and climate clubs. When students are empowered to take initiative and see the impact of their actions, they develop the confidence and motivation to lead.

    Community and Connection
What was the most rewarding part of bringing people together for a gathering? Did you experience any challenges in hosting, and if so, how did you overcome them?

he most rewarding part of bringing people together for a gathering is often seeing the genuine connections and joy that happen when people feel welcomed and included. Whether it's laughter over shared stories, collaboration sparked by conversation, or simply the warmth of being together, knowing you created a space where people could connect meaningfully is deeply fulfilling.
Challenges in hosting are common—anything from last-minute cancellations, dietary needs, or tech issues (for virtual gatherings), to managing time and flow. The key to overcoming these is flexibility and preparation. Having a backup plan, staying calm under pressure, and focusing on the purpose of the gathering—bringing people together—helps shift the focus away from perfection and toward experience.

  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Wildlife
What did you learn about how tourism impacts wildlife, and how can you make more conscious choices when planning a trip? How do you think your travel decisions can contribute to wildlife conservation and respectful interactions with nature?

Tourism can have both positive and negative impacts on wildlife. On the negative side, irresponsible tourism can lead to habitat destruction, pollution, disruption of animal behavior, and even contribute to the exploitation of animals through unethical wildlife attractions. Crowding, litter, and noise can stress animals or push them out of their natural habitats. However, when done right, tourism can also support conservation efforts—by funding protected areas, creating local jobs that depend on preserving wildlife, and raising awareness about endangered species and ecosystems.
