DAILY ACTIONS

Land, Water, and Air

Understand My Water Footprint

Each of us has a water footprint, directly linked to our daily activities as well as the water required in the production of things we use each day. Understanding our water use is important for a healthy planet. I will calculate my water footprint and look for a few ways I can reduce consumption or waste, then share what I learned on the feed.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Health and Well-Being

Prepare for Extreme Weather

Extreme weather events like hurricanes, wildfires, and floods can disrupt lives and upend our communities. I will take proactive steps to prepare for extreme weather by safeguarding my home and creating or updating an emergency plan and kit with essential supplies, evacuation routes, and contact information.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Donate to or Support Low-Income Solar Initiatives

Clean energy should be accessible to all. I will support, donate, or volunteer to help programs that bring solar energy to low-income communities, helping create a more equitable and sustainable future.

UNCOMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Land, Water, and Air

Save Water When Washing Dishes

Dishwashers can save water — if used wisely. I will only run the dishwasher when it’s full and skip the pre-rinse to reduce water and energy use. If I don't have a dishwasher, I will turn off the tap as often as possible while washing dishes.

COMPLETED 28
DAILY ACTIONS

Health and Well-Being

Replace a Product

Small changes can make a big difference for health and sustainability. Using what I learned from auditing ingredients in the products I use, I will replace 1 toxic or harmful products I use with safer, eco-friendly alternatives.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Energy-efficient lighting is a bright idea. I will replace 4 incandescent light bulbs with Energy Star-certified LED bulbs, saving up to $14 per fixture per year.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Land, Water, and Air

Calculate My Carbon Impact

Knowing our carbon footprint is the first step to reducing it. I will calculate my carbon impact and identify lifestyle changes that could reduce the carbon footprint and impacts on the environment. I will share my commitments to lowering my impact on the feed.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Empowering the Next Generation

Donate to Support Emerging Leaders

Investing in young leaders helps shape the future. I will make a donation to a program or organization that supports emerging environmental leaders.

UNCOMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Land, Water, and Air

Reduce Food Waste

Wasting food also wastes water, energy, and resources. I will keep a daily log of food I throw away during the Ecochallenge, either because it went bad before I ate it, I put too much on my plate, or it was scraps from food preparation, and commit to reducing my food waste throughout the challenge.

COMPLETED 28
DAILY ACTIONS

Wildlife

Use Reusable Bags

Plastic bags do not always end up in landfills and if they aren't properly disposed of. In nature, they can be mistaken for food by many wild animals and harm wildlife. When I go shopping, I will be sure to bring my own bags to reduce waste and the chance that plastic bags could find their way into wildlife habitats.

COMPLETED 28
DAILY ACTIONS

Wildlife

Plant (or Adopt) a Plant

Landscaping with native plants, gardening, and having plants inside can have benefits for nature and our health. I will plant or adopt a new plant or grow one from seeds and post a photo of it to the feed.

UNCOMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Wildlife

Donate to Support Wildlife

There are many amazing projects supporting wildlife and their habitats. I will choose a project or organization to support that helps species and habitats I care about and make a donation.

UNCOMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Health and Well-Being

Audit Toxic Products in my Home

Many common products contain harmful chemicals. I will spend 3 minutes researching chemicals found in products I use, and I will make a list of products I'd like to replace with safer options.

UNCOMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Wildlife

Learn to be a Responsible Tourist

Being a responsible tourist means not disturbing wildlife and choosing eco-friendly tour operators and destinations that prioritize wildlife conservation and respect animal welfare. I will spend 5 minutes researching ways to travel responsibly to ensure my adventures support, rather than harm, wildlife and their habitats.

UNCOMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

I was particularly struck by the overwhelming presence of plastic in the kitchen, primarily used to protect or package fruits, bread, and other fresh foods. Although there has been progress in adopting recycled plastics, this approach alone is insufficient. It is imperative that we not only increase recycling efforts but also significantly reduce our overall reliance on plastic if we are to achieve meaningful environmental change.

Switching to LED bulbs actually made me feel pretty good, like I’m finally doing something simple but important to cut down my energy use. It’s such an easy change, but it feels like it adds up over time.
Other little things I could do? Probably unplug chargers when I’m not using them, be smarter about using heating and AC, and maybe switch to energy-efficient appliances when it’s time to replace the old ones. Every bit helps!

Today, Spain suffered a major power outage. I remember when I asked about being prepared for extreme weather events... and although this wasn't caused by the weather, it was something quite similar, a failure in the electrical system. You never really know when it’s important to have all the necessary tools and equipment ready.

As part of our annual initiative at Emerson Madrid, we host young students to introduce them to the business environment. This year too, I had the opportunity to present the topic of sustainability. I outlined the three core pillars we focus on at Emerson, providing practical examples:
    • How we enhance our internal environmental sustainability performance,
    • How Emerson’s technologies, solutions, and expertise support our customers in their transition toward sustainability, and
    • How we foster collaboration and innovation across the global value chain.
It is always a privilege to contribute to initiatives like this. Investing time in the next generation of professionals is essential to ensuring a more sustainable and responsible future for all.

As you know recently we have the recommendation for the European Union to be prepare in case we have a war, not as equal as extreme wateher even put we can use similar things. So to stay safe and ready for extreme weather here in Spain, I put together a small emergency kit with water, canned food, a flashlight, a power bank for my phone, and a first-aid kit. I like to check AEMET and Protección Civil for updates. They always have great info. Since we get a lot of sunny heatwaves and a prolonged period of dry weather, I make sure to stay well-hydrated, keep my home cool and have a plan just in case we ever need to move quickly. I also keep my important documents safe in a waterproof folder. Being prepared gives me peace of mind and helps me enjoy the season with more confidence.

My water footprint this year is below the average compared to that of a U.S. citizen — almost by half. Participating in the Eco-Challenge over the years has helped me become much more conscious about my water usage. One thing that always shocks me the most is how eating meat has such a huge impact on both water consumption and carbon footprint.

This year, I must admit I was pleasantly surprised to receive good news from the results of my blood analysis. Overall, I plan to do a second test to re-check everything and ask my doctor for additional advice on maintaining or lowering my cholesterol, triglycerides, glucose, and ferritin levels. It seems that, for now, I am doing things correctly with my diet, exercise, and overall habits, but it’s always good to receive extra tips and guidance.

Using wooden utensils daily in my kitchen and minimizing the use of plastic aligns with eco-friendly values. Additionally, using a reusable water bottle at the office (a gift from Emerson).
To recycle when is possible, alternative packing (cloth), avoid single-use plastics helps us significantly reduce plastic waste.
