Lily's actions

Biodiversity + Wildlife

Seek Alternative Gifts and Souvenirs

When traveling, I will seek souvenirs that support local communities and do not cause harm to the environment or wildlife.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Action Track: Community

Plant Trees

Trees capture carbon and produce oxygen that is essential to life on earth. I will support this important piece of nature by organizing or joining a community group to plant 2 native trees in my community, public parks, office location, campus or backyard.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Freshwater + Oceans

Reduce Pollutants in Cleaning

Understanding cleaning product ingredients and their effect on water and biodiversity is helpful to our consumer choices. I will spend 30 minutes learning about how cleaning products affect our water and try making my own cleaning products to reduce pollutants.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Action Track: Community

Share My "Why"

I will record a video to share why I am taking action this Earth Month, a sustainable swap I've made, and/or a local conservation effort in my area.

UNCOMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Climate + Air

Stay on the Ground

Carbon emissions from air travel is harmful to planetary and human health. Instead of traveling by plane, I will find an alternative way to accomplish the goals of an upcoming trip (i.e. telepresence, vacation locally).

UNCOMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Freshwater + Oceans

Understand My Water Footprint

Each of us has a water footprint, directly linked to our daily activities as well as the water required in the production of things we use each day. Understanding our water use is important for a healthy planet. I will calculate my water footprint and look for a few ways I can reduce consumption or waste, then share what I learned on the feed.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Land + Forests

Keep My Community Clean

At times it may not feel like it's up to us to keep our community clean and healthy, but we all have a role to play. Each day I am outside, I will pick up any litter I see.

COMPLETED 19
DAILY ACTIONS

Biodiversity + Wildlife

Save the Bees

Bees are vital to ecosystems. To help save the bees, I will learn which local flowers provide nectar and plant them in my backyard or in a pot on my balcony.

UNCOMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Action Track: Community

Volunteer in my Community

I will volunteer 2 hours in my community.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Climate + Air

Weekly Meal Planning

One third of all food produced worldwide is wasted, and so is the energy it takes to produce and transport that food. I will reduce food waste and save money by planning a weekly menu, only buying the ingredients I need and eating what I planned each day.

COMPLETED 19
DAILY ACTIONS

Climate + Air

Choose Renewable Energy

Renewable energy options are becoming more widespread and accessible. Not only are they good for the planet, they can help save money as well. I will sign up for my utility company's clean/renewable energy option. If my utility does not offer one, I will contact them to advocate for this option in the future.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Climate + Air

Calculate My Carbon Impact

Carbon emissions can show up in many surprising ways in our life. I will calculate the carbon emissions associated with my household and consider how lifestyle changes could reduce the carbon footprint and impacts on the environment.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Climate + Air

Sustainability Lunch and Learn

Learning in a social setting can inspire connection and change. I will work with a friend or colleague to plan and host a lunch and learn at work, school, in my neighborhood or other location to learn more about an environmental topic important to me. After the lunch and learn, I will share more about it on the feed.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Action Track: Community

Borrow Before I Buy

Why buy something I will only use once or a few times if someone nearby has it for me to borrow, and why not share something I have that someone may only need a few times a year? To reduce my consumption and waste, I will create or support the sharing economy with friends, family, colleagues or neighbors.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Action Track: Community

SIGN UP TO RECEIVE NEWS ON SUSTAINABILITY AT EMERSON

I will sign up to the Sustainability Aficionados distribution list to receive global news on sustainability at Emerson, including world news and Greening OF, BY, and WITH news.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Action Track: Community

Raise Awareness for the Conservation of Freshwater and Oceans

I will spend 10 minutes learning more about the importance of freshwater + ocean conservation, and how I can reduce my water use. I will share what I learn with people in person, on social media, and on the feed.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Land + Forests

Regenerative Agriculture and Me

Regenerative agriculture focuses on farming and ranching in a way that supports life and restores the soil. I will spend 10 minutes learning about regenerative agriculture and find out if any nearby farms practice regenerative agriculture.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Land + Forests

Explore My Area

When we explore natural spaces around us, our connections with them change. I will spend 60 minutes exploring a new area around my neighborhood, office, or campus (e.g., park, water body, nearby trail, community garden, green space, etc.).

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Land + Forests

Choose Eco-Friendly Wood and Paper

Trees provide food and habitat for local wildlife species, shade our streets and homes, and help keep our air and water clean by capturing pollutants. Buying products that help protect forests makes a difference. I will only purchase wood, furniture, and paper products from ecologically certified sources such as Forest Stewardship Council.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Freshwater + Oceans

Cooking Oil Disposal

Pouring cooking oil down the drain can cause damage to waterways and ecosystems. I will learn how to properly dispose of cooking oil to help support healthy ecosystems.

COMPLETED 19
DAILY ACTIONS

Freshwater + Oceans

Join a Cleanup Effort

I will organize or participate in a trash pickup at a local river, beach, or natural body of water.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Biodiversity + Wildlife

Plastic in Clothing and Water

Synthetic clothing can contain plastic and shed harmful microplastics into our water. I will use a microplastics catcher in my laundry, or install a microplastics filter for my washing machine.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Climate + Air

Online Energy Audit

Energy use and waste is often invisible. I will complete an online energy audit of my home, office, or dorm room and identify my next steps for saving energy.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Land + Forests

Compost Food Waste

Food in the landfill is one of the main sources of greenhouse gasses. I will avoid sending up to .69 lbs (.31 kg) of food waste to the landfill per day by composting my food.

COMPLETED 19
DAILY ACTIONS

Land + Forests

Carry My Trash

I will carry all of my unrecyclable, non-compostable trash with me this month, to raise my awareness of how much I send to the landfill. I will post on the feed my reflections, conversations, and actions I will take moving forward.

COMPLETED 19

  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Biodiversity + Wildlife Seek Alternative Gifts and Souvenirs
How do your consumption choices affect the health of wildlife and other communities?

    Lily Centeno's avatar
    Lily Centeno 4/17/2024 4:46 AM
Opting for alternative gifts like handmade goods/items can help reduce the demand for products that contributes to pollution and overuse of natural resources. Purchasing locally made products/items helps reduce the damage that mass production causes to our ecosystem. This mindful consumption not only benefits the ecosystem but also the livelihood of small businesses.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Action Track: Community Plant Trees
How is planting trees good for your mental, physical, and spiritual health?

    Lily Centeno's avatar
    Lily Centeno 4/16/2024 11:23 PM
Planting trees is beneficial to mental health because it fosters a feeling of purpose and achievement. It also fosters a connection with nature, which has been demonstrated to enhance mood and general wellbeing. Since planting trees requires physical labor, it improves cardiovascular health and fitness. Planting trees promotes a greater appreciation for nature and a sense of earthly connection, which in turn brings about a sense of harmony and tranquility.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Land + Forests Explore My Area
Where did you go for your walk or hike in nature? What were the benefits of doing so?

    Lily Centeno's avatar
    Lily Centeno 4/16/2024 10:21 PM
I went for a walk to a nearby park from where I live. The benefits were getting some fresh air, connecting with nature, and getting some light exercise.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Freshwater + Oceans Reduce Pollutants in Cleaning
What did you learn about ingredients in our cleaning products and how they impact water and biodiversity? Did you try making your own cleaning products? If so, how did it go?

    Lily Centeno's avatar
    Lily Centeno 4/16/2024 10:17 PM
Many hazardous substances that might harm the environment are commonly included in traditional cleaning products. Among the substances that can pollute the air and water and jeopardize aquatic life as well as worsen air pollution are ammonia, bleach, and phosphates. Green cleaning products, on the other hand, have a lower overall environmental effect since they are made with non-toxic, biodegradable chemicals that decompose more safely in the environment.

Day 17: After participating in the LPPWP coastal clean-up on April 15, 2024, I've come to the realization that single-use plastics account for the majority of our garbage. Below is a list of Philippine local brands who supports the "No Single use Plastic" movement. https://tgp-ph.com/2019/04/07/

but, we also have to be conscious about buying lots of reusable stuff like bottles and the like - we might have a lot more than we need (I do, unfortunately)
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Freshwater + Oceans Understand My Water Footprint
What did you learn about your water footprint and what are you going to do to reduce and be aware of the water you use?

    Lily Centeno's avatar
    Lily Centeno 4/16/2024 7:51 AM
It helped me better understand how much water I use on a daily basis for things like cooking food, and using it for personal use. In order to reduce my water consumption, I'll make an effort to address leaks as soon as I see them, take shorter showers, and switch off the faucet when washing the dishes or when brushing my teeth.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Climate + Air Calculate My Carbon Impact
Where in your life do you emit the most carbon? What change are you willing to make in your daily life to reduce this output?

    Lily Centeno's avatar
    Lily Centeno 4/16/2024 7:23 AM
Transportation is probably one of the areas where I produce the greatest carbon emissions, most especially that I really on "grab" most of the time when we go out and going to the office and going back home.

To reduce my carbon footprint in this area, I can opt for more sustainable modes of transportation like walking or riding public transport "MRT" whenever possible.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Freshwater + Oceans Join a Cleanup Effort
How does working with others to clean up your community make you feel? What results did you see? Please consider posting a photo of your cleanup!

    Lily Centeno 4/15/2024 6:43 PM
Participating in a community clean-up leaves a sense of accomplishment, knowing that I played a part in making my community cleaner. It gives a sense of pride seeing your community clean and being a part of the reason to it.
