    My parents taught me that the dishwasher should be run only when it's full to save water and thankfully that habit has stuck with me. On the other hand, a bad habit I'm trying to break with some success so far is turning the tap off when handwashing dishes. Working in the water industry has taught me how valuable clean water is and that access to it shouldn't be taken for granted.

    An average American throws out about 240 lbs of food per year. The average family of four spends $1,500 a year on food that they throw out. Where would you rather use this money? What patterns did you notice in the food you threw away, and how can you address them?

    I would rather put this money towards my savings. In Orlando, we have a paid composting service that picks up your food scraps every two weeks and in return you get 20 lbs of gardening compost twice a year. Although it's a paid service, it pays for itself since it has made me much more aware of how much food waste I was producing and has resulted in a lower grocery bill every month now that I plan out what I need more carefully. I have also become a lot more interested in learning new recipes that incorporate the parts of food that would typically be thrown out (like carrot top pesto), so I can make groceries last a lot longer.

      This is great Gaby! I wish my compost service would give us some garden compost back but we can buy it back for a pretty small cost. Carrot top pesto sounds delicious. If you don't mind I'd love the recipe.

    I have been using reusable bags for years at this point for groceries, shopping, etc. so this was an easy task for me. The hardest part for me is avoiding buying new cute reusable bags as I have so many already, so I try to leave a couple in places like my car or at work in case I need one out of the blue.

      I have the same issue with buying the "cute" bags, Gaby! But I spread the wealth with friends and family, especially with my son who didn't use reusable bags for years until I had given him so many that he decided to give it a try.

      Great idea Gaby - I try to do this too as I suffer from the same impulse. An impromptu stop at the store with no bag handy almost certainly means that a new one is coming home with me to add to the "bag of bags". OR I'm trying to stuff items in my coat pockets and balance them in my arms on the way to the car.
