Wildlife
Learn about Native Species
The world is full of unique species that all play an important role in nature. I will spend 5 minutes learning what the native plants and wildlife are in my region.
Wildlife
Use Reusable Bags
Plastic bags do not always end up in landfills and if they aren't properly disposed of. In nature, they can be mistaken for food by many wild animals and harm wildlife. When I go shopping, I will be sure to bring my own bags to reduce waste and the chance that plastic bags could find their way into wildlife habitats.
Empowering the Next Generation
Support a School
Schools play a crucial role in youth development and be hubs for sustainability. I will donate funds, time, or supplies to 3 local schools to support environmental education, field trips, sustainability projects, and youth empowerment. I will share how I supported schools on the feed.
Land, Water, and Air
Calculate My Carbon Impact
Knowing our carbon footprint is the first step to reducing it. I will calculate my carbon impact and identify lifestyle changes that could reduce the carbon footprint and impacts on the environment. I will share my commitments to lowering my impact on the feed.
Land, Water, and Air
Save Water When Washing Dishes
Dishwashers can save water — if used wisely. I will only run the dishwasher when it’s full and skip the pre-rinse to reduce water and energy use. If I don't have a dishwasher, I will turn off the tap as often as possible while washing dishes.
Land, Water, and Air
Reduce Food Waste
Wasting food also wastes water, energy, and resources. I will keep a daily log of food I throw away during the Ecochallenge, either because it went bad before I ate it, I put too much on my plate, or it was scraps from food preparation, and commit to reducing my food waste throughout the challenge.
Community and Connection
Explore the Feed and Connect with Others
I will spend 5 minutes reading the Ecochallenge feed each day and giving high fives or commenting on posts by people who I don't know, but whose content inspires or interests me.
Sustainable Innovation
Choose a Product Made with Sustainable Materials
Every choice matters. I will purchase or switch to products made from sustainable or recycled materials to support innovation and reduce environmental impact.
Empowering the Next Generation
Support Youth Climate Activists
Youth activists are leading the charge for a better world. I will spend 15 minutes learning about or supporting youth climate activists through sharing their work or attending their events.
Health and Well-Being
Replace a Product
Small changes can make a big difference for health and sustainability. Using what I learned from auditing ingredients in the products I use, I will replace 1 toxic or harmful products I use with safer, eco-friendly alternatives.
Wildlife
Plant (or Adopt) a Plant
Landscaping with native plants, gardening, and having plants inside can have benefits for nature and our health. I will plant or adopt a new plant or grow one from seeds and post a photo of it to the feed.
Wildlife
Learn How to Save the Bees
Bees and other pollinators are vital to ecosystems and agriculture. I will spending 30 minutes learning about local pollinators and why they are so important.
Wildlife
Learn the 7 Principles of Leave No Trace
Leave No Trace means enjoying nature responsibly by minimizing our impact and leaving the environment as we found it, or better. I will spend 30 minutes learning about the seven core principles to minimize my impact while enjoying the outdoors.
Community and Connection
Attend a Local Event
Local events such as farmers' markets, festivals, or community meetings like town halls are great ways to feel part of a community. I will attend 1 community events to connect with others and learn more about my area.
Community and Connection
Share Information about Local Resources
Knowledge of local resources helps communities thrive. I will learn about local resources, especially mutual aid groups, and share them with others on social media, in conversations, or in other ways that help spread the word.
Community and Connection
Explore My Area
Discovering what’s nearby fosters a deeper connection to my community. I will explore 2 new places in my area, such as parks, historical sites, or local businesses.
Health and Well-Being
Audit Toxic Products in my Home
Many common products contain harmful chemicals. I will spend 30 minutes researching chemicals found in products I use, and I will make a list of products I'd like to replace with safer options.
Wildlife
Donate to Support Wildlife
There are many amazing projects supporting wildlife and their habitats. I will choose a project or organization to support that helps species and habitats I care about and make a donation.

REFLECTION QUESTIONWildlifeHow do pollinators impact your daily life, and what changes can you make to ensure they continue to thrive?
Laken Burns 4/30/2025 5:26 PMPollinators are responsible for so much of the food we eat and the beauty we enjoy! I’ll continue to plant pollinator plants when gardening, and also avoid mowing too early in the season. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONCommunity and ConnectionWhat resources did you discover, and how do you think they can benefit your community? How did sharing this information make you feel more connected to your community’s needs and opportunities?

I spread the word about 412 Food Rescue, a local organization that picks up food donations and takes them to people/groups that need it. Today, we were able to donate 90 pounds of produce, and it's going to a children's charity event!! It feels great to make a local impact :) -

We're adding another bed to the Edible Garden, and instead of wood, we'll be using recycled plastic lumber! I'd much rather plastic be upcycled into useful materials like this when possible. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth and Well-BeingWhat product did you replace, and why was it important to you? How do you feel about making a small change for a healthier, more sustainable home?

I replaced my laundry detergent with detergent sheets! It was important to me that I continue to have fragrance-free options to avoid irritating my sensitive skin, and this did the trick without the plastic waste or mess of a typical detergent container! I'm going to keep using these :)-

I had no idea how many different products contained toxic ingredients, and how many cleaners can be made at home. I'll definitely be looking into these things moving forward!!-

Recently I was introduced to an app - 'Yuka' through my colleague and through product label scanning in this free app you can review all the ingredients and see if they are good or bad for your health and the environment. I was surprised to check all cosmetics and food stuff that I have been using that are bad and now started to make different choices, as the app also recommends a better similar kind product.

Yesterday, we planted spring crops in the Edible Garden! There's lots of cool season produce out there now-- cabbage, cauliflower, different varieties of kale, kohlrabi, the list goes on! It's always nice to see the seedlings I started in February arranged in the way that I mapped out in November. Here's to a productive season!!

A bird struck the window of the greenhouse I work in today, which was jarring to hear so early in the morning. It seemed stunned but was definitely breathing when I checked on it (through the window, so as not to scare it). After consulting with a coworker on next steps, I returned to find it gone, so I'm assuming it flew away and I'm hopeful that it'll be okay. My best guess is a red-bellied woodpecker-- it had the right coloring and shape. While this was unfortunate, we do keep track of bird strikes on campus, and I added it to the log and took a minute to scroll through. It was a bit of a morose way to read about native bird species, but it's heartening to know that my conservatory keeps track of such things and often adds screening/window clings to deter future strikes. I'm going to do some more research on bird strikes and what we can do to help our local feathered friends.-

Julia is working on an improved logging system for us to better track and have tangible data to make improvements. It's turned into a larger task than we expected, but happy its in progress for us. Thanks for logging! We need all the data we can get. -

Today, I researched a little about native mushrooms! When I think of native species, I often think of flora and fauna, and I often neglect fungus, but there's so much to learn there, too! -

I'm really trying to keep my food waste low, but alas, a bagged salad went bad in the fridge before I could get to it. Sigh. I know I should just be making the salads myself anyway, but I really struggle with food prep. I want to prioritize healthy eating and I hate single-use plastic, but I need convenience or I'll end up too tired to make a real meal (can't say how many times I've had chips and salsa for dinner because I was exhausted after work, or how many times a hopeful version of myself bought the fresh produce just to see it rot). I know my mom cuts up all her produce immediately after shopping so that she doesn't have to think as much about cooking throughout the week. Maybe I can talk to my roommate and we can give that a shot.-

Cutting right after you buy is so smart! When I prep salads, I often go the little-lettuce route, as in, the base of the salad is mostly produce that may last longer precut like cabbage, carrots, kale, cucumbers, etc. I realized that is what was in the Aldi salad mixes and why they last so long! But, if I make them myself I can have more salad with less plastic. Highly recommend a mandolin slicer for the low energy prep days :) -

The wild bergamot I planted last year is starting to reappear in the garden! I recognize the leaves and it's spread out a bit, which is encouraging. It didn't flower last year, but I'm hopeful that, now that it's had a season to get settled, things will be different this summer. I can't wait to see what kind of pollinators this pretty native plant will attract!
