Samantha's actions
Land, Water, and Air
Understand My Water Footprint
Each of us has a water footprint, directly linked to our daily activities as well as the water required in the production of things we use each day. Understanding our water use is important for a healthy planet. I will calculate my water footprint and look for a few ways I can reduce consumption or waste, then share what I learned on the feed.
Land, Water, and Air
Join a Cleanup Effort
Working together to clean up public spaces helps the environment and builds community. I will participate in 1 community cleanup efforts in my neighborhood or local area.
Community and Connection
Host a Gathering
Bringing people together helps strengthen bonds. I will organize and host a gathering, such as a potluck, coffee meet up, or shared meal, for friends, family, colleagues, or neighbors to foster connection and community spirit.
Health and Well-Being
Prepare for Extreme Weather
Extreme weather events like hurricanes, wildfires, and floods can disrupt lives and upend our communities. I will take proactive steps to prepare for extreme weather by safeguarding my home and creating or updating an emergency plan and kit with essential supplies, evacuation routes, and contact information.
Health and Well-Being
Go Get a Check Up
Regular health check-ups help prevent problems before they start. I will schedule or attend a medical, dental, or mental health check-up to take care of my well-being.
Community and Connection
Join a Group
Belonging to a group can help build friendships and a sense of purpose. I will explore online or in-person groups or clubs that share my interests or goals and join a group to connect with others.
Community and Connection
Check In with a Friend or Colleague
Staying connected strengthens relationships and boosts well-being. Each day, I will reach out to 3 friends or colleagues to check in, have a meaningful conversation, or offer support.
Empowering the Next Generation
Support Youth Climate Activists
Youth activists are leading the charge for a better world. I will spend 30 minutes learning about or supporting youth climate activists through sharing their work or attending their events.
Health and Well-Being
Enjoy Fruits and Veggies
Adding fruits and vegetables to our meals nourishes our body and the planet. I will prepare and enjoy 2 servings of a variety of colorful fruits and veggies.
Sustainable Innovation
Replace Old Bulbs with LED Bulbs
Energy-efficient lighting is a bright idea. I will replace 3 incandescent light bulbs with Energy Star-certified LED bulbs, saving up to $14 per fixture per year.
Sustainable Innovation
Invest in the Future of Sustainability
Sustainable investments shape a greener future. I will research and invest in companies, funds, or projects that supports sustainability, such as renewable energy, green tech, or sustainable practices. I will share more about who I supported with others on social media or in the Ecochallenge feed.
Sustainable Innovation
Learn about the Magic of Seaweed
Seaweed is a powerful ally for the planet. I will spend 30 minutes learning how seaweed can improve ocean health, capture carbon, support sustainable food systems, and inspire eco-friendly products.
Empowering the Next Generation
Teach Advocacy Skills
Advocacy skills empower youth to make a difference. I will spend 1 hours teaching a young person how to advocate for environmental issues, such as engaging in decision-making, understanding civics, speaking publicly, or organizing events.
Empowering the Next Generation
Conduct an Audit with a Young Person
Learning by doing empowers youth. I will conduct an environmental audit — such as a home energy or waste audit — alongside a young person to teach them practical sustainability skills and see what I learn from them as well.
Empowering the Next Generation
Read an Environmental Book with a Child
Stories inspire curiosity and care for the world. I will read 2 environmental-themed books with a child to help them learn about nature and sustainability.
Wildlife
Learn to be a Responsible Tourist
Being a responsible tourist means not disturbing wildlife and choosing eco-friendly tour operators and destinations that prioritize wildlife conservation and respect animal welfare. I will spend 30 minutes researching ways to travel responsibly to ensure my adventures support, rather than harm, wildlife and their habitats.
Wildlife
Learn How to Save the Bees
Bees and other pollinators are vital to ecosystems and agriculture. I will spending 30 minutes learning about local pollinators and why they are so important.

REFLECTION QUESTIONSustainable InnovationWhat new insights did you gain about seaweed’s role in combating environmental challenges? Were you surprised how many products you may already be using contain seaweed?
Samantha Burd 4/30/2025 2:56 PMThrough research, I learned about seaweed's potential for carbon sequestration and its role in sustainable biofuel production, and its key role in mitigating climate change. I found it cool to learn about seaweed’s capacity to absorb carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and ocean. It’s also crazy how many products seaweed can be found in, from food and cosmetics to pharmaceuticals and bioplastics. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONCommunity and ConnectionWhat was the most rewarding part of bringing people together for a gathering? Did you experience any challenges in hosting, and if so, how did you overcome them?
Samantha Burd 4/30/2025 12:22 PMThe most rewarding part about bringing us all together was the laughter that ensued throughout the whole gathering. There were some difficulties with finding a time for everybody and figuring out rides, but they were quickly figured out in the group chat. It was a great time, and I look forward to hosting it again. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONCommunity and ConnectionHow did joining a group make you feel more connected or supported? Why do you think belonging to a group is important?
Samantha Burd 4/30/2025 12:12 PMThis group has made me feel like a part of something bigger and important. Not only are we getting closer and I get to meet new friends, but we are also learning to strengthen our faith and teach it to others. I think belonging to a group is important because you learn important skills like teamwork and networking yourself (getting to know people), in addition it helps you feel included giving you a sense of purpose which is good for your mental health. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth and Well-BeingWhat motivated you to schedule or attend your check-up, and how did it make you feel afterward that you completed this action?
Samantha Burd 4/30/2025 9:38 AMI have never liked going to the dentist, but I know its necessary and good for my health, and that’s why I continue to go. Even though I was uncomfortable the whole time, I felt much better (with cleaner teeth) in the end because I know that I have healthy teeth and will continue to do so. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth and Well-BeingHow does eating more fruits and vegetables and less meat positively affect yourself, other people, and our planet? What fruits or vegetables did you try this week, and which was your favorite?
Samantha Burd 4/30/2025 9:32 AMEating more fruits and vegetables and less meat can boost your health by providing essential nutrients and fiber, it also benefits the plants by lowering greenhouse gas emissions land usage associated with meat production. I tried a mango for the first time this week, and its sweet and tropical flavor had me hooked and now I write it on the grocery list. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONLand, Water, and AirWhat surprised you most about your water footprint, and how did it influence your perspective on water use? What changes can you make to reduce your water consumption, and how will these impact your daily routine?
Samantha Burd 4/29/2025 11:47 PMLearning that my water footprint is significantly lower than average surprised me, highlighting that even seemingly small daily choices can accumulate to a substantial difference in overall consumption. This has reinforced my commitment to mindful water use and the understanding that conservation is achievable. To further reduce my consumption, I can be more diligent about shorter showers, fix any potential leaks immediately, and opt for water-wise landscaping, which might require minor adjustments like timing my outdoor watering more carefully. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWildlifeHow do pollinators impact your daily life, and what changes can you make to ensure they continue to thrive?
Samantha Burd 4/29/2025 11:27 PMPollinators are essential for the fruits, vegetables, and nuts that make up a significant portion of our diets, impacting everything from the availability of apples at the grocery store to the coffee we drink. Their actions also support the growth of forage for livestock and contribute to the beauty of our landscapes. To help pollinators thrive, we can plant native, nectar-rich flowers, avoid using pesticides in our gardens, and provide sources of clean water. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWildlifeWhat did you learn about how tourism impacts wildlife, and how can you make more conscious choices when planning a trip? How do you think your travel decisions can contribute to wildlife conservation and respectful interactions with nature?
Samantha Burd 4/22/2025 10:44 PMI learned that tourism can, unfortunately, harm wildlife through habitat destruction, disturbance of animal behavior, and unethical attractions. However, we can make more conscious choices by researching tour operators and accommodations that prioritize conservation and respect for local ecosystems. Opting for eco-friendly transportation, avoiding single-use plastics, and supporting local communities also minimizes our impact. By choosing responsible wildlife encounters, like observing animals from a safe distance and never feeding them, and by supporting businesses dedicated to conservation, our travel decisions can contribute to protecting wildlife and ensuring respectful interactions with nature for the future.
