Action Track

Plant Trees

Trees are vital for resilience, storing carbon, sheltering biodiversity, and protecting water and soil. I will plant 4 trees in my yard, community, or through a local project to help ecosystems adapt and thrive.

At our prior home, we had 2 blueberry bushes, a raspberry bush, a blackberry bush, and a pear tree. On our current property, we have berry bushes on the perimeter, and we started what we hope will be a mini orchard. We planted 2 apple and 2 pear trees last year that we hope will bear fruit this year. I would like to plant 4 more trees this year - perhaps a different variety each of apple and pear but also a peach and plum, or maybe cherry.

I definitely added more sleep on Saturday. We're empty nesters although we have our grandkids frequently for weekends and sometimes weeks at a time. This past weekend was just us and I was exhausted. I fell asleep at 5 PM. I briefly woke up at 9 PM, drank a smoothie with protein added, and went back to bed until 7 AM the next morning. I wish I could do that more often.

My grandson today started a spring vacation camp at a local 4H farm that supports connection with the land and teaches kids sustainable practices. The farm teaches environmental stewardship. I'm so excited for him to attend camp, and the best part is so is he!
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    What is resilience?
What personal strengths or supports helped you adapt to a past challenge? How might those same strengths help you in the future?

A personal strength that helped me adapt to a past challenge is willingness to learn. I am a lifelong learner and try to approach challenges as a new opportunity rather than a road block. I am a nurse by career and have found that (1) there is often more than 1 right way to do something, (2) even after years of doing something, there is often a different way to do it that is better.

What did you learn about the businesses or owners you supported? How does shopping locally contribute to a more vibrant and resilient community?

I have shopped local businesses for years. I prefer to support my neighbor than support a corporation.

I joined this challenge to reinvigorate my quest to leave the world in a better place than I found it. I am always looking for better ways and new ways to lower my carbon footprint. I am hoping to find fun learning experiences that I can pass on to my grandchildren so they can grow up learning the importance of honoring the earth and keeping it health.
